Joe Lhota, the recently departed M.T.A. chairman and former deputy mayor for Rudy Giuliani, filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board. He is now, officially, running for mayor.
Just a few days ago Celeste Katz of the Daily Politics/Daily News had reported that Lhota already was ahead of the rest of the Republican candidates according to a Quinnipiac Poll ( "Still A Mystery To Most, Joe Lhota Leads The 2013 GOP Field For NYC Mayor: Q Poll" [http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2013/01/still-a-mystery-to-most-joe-lhota-leads-the-2013-gop-field-for-nyc-mayor-q-pol ]).
According to Colin Campbell's Politicker post, "FORWARD THINKING -- Joe Lhota Says He’s More Than an M.T.A. Chairman and a Giuliani Guy " [ http://politicker.com/2013/01/joe-lhota-says-hes-more-than-an-m-t-a-chairman-and-a-giuliani-guy/ ]
Given that Joseph Lhota is a long-time Republican, lives in Brooklyn, has a solid connection to Rudy Giuliani and already is significantly ahead of the Republican pack, it can be expected that he will be the favored candidate of most Republicans in Brooklyn in the event of a primary. Even Brooklyn Republican Chairman Craig Eaton, who formally supports Adolfo Carrion, has had good things to say about Mr. Lhota; and since Carrion trailed badly in the Quinnipiac Poll, many expect that Eaton will quickly shift his support to Lhota.

UPDATE: Colin Campbell's "Morning Read: ‘It Should Be the Number-One Borough’ " in today's Politicker [http://politicker.com/2013/01/morning-read-it-should-be-the-number-one-borough/ ] showed what a "pro" operation Joe Lhota has going. Lhota's "Day One" roll-out was across the entire media spectrum from tweets and other "social media," through cable and broadcast TV, and across the print media from the NY Times to the SI Advance, with the WS Journal in as part of the sandwich.
