Bob Capano issues a forthright statement on selection of a GOP candidate for the mayoral race in 2013 -- Republican Leaders Need to Support Republican‏s, LHOTA or CATSIMATIDIS

Any loyal Republican  would have to agree with Bob Capano, who is demonstrating rare leadership during this otherwise dark time for the Brooklyn GOP

Only one week ago a critical post on this blog had warned Kings County Republican Leader Craig Eaton of just about the same thing

Mr. Capano's  January 20th statement is as follows:

"In Joe Lhota and John Catsimatidis (if he officially announces his candidacy), NYC Republicans have two outstanding choices who have the qualifications and resources to be Mayor. They understand the need to create jobs, support businesses, and keep NYC safe. There is no reason for our party and its leaders to look outside of these two fine Republicans to be our nominee."

Bob Capano recently served as District Director for Brooklyn-Queens Republican Congressman Bob Turner, has  served on the staffs of  various other elected officials, is a Past-president  of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club and twice ran for public office in Southwest Brooklyn as a Republican .

In an earlier post on this blog I had critiqued and admonished  the Brooklyn County Leader  in a  manner similar to what Bob Capano is doing today.  At that time I observed that  "... [a]fter weeks of jockeying  by [Republican County Leaders] Eaton and Savino, it was obvious that [non-Republican Adolfo] Carrion's GOP candidacy  had gathered no additional support when the five county leaders  gathered [on Thursday 1/10/13] for a dinner meeting on Staten Island.  Just as none of the other leaders made any moves toward his candidate, Eaton made no moves in their direction either ....  [Said Eaton] 'I still believe that [non-Republican]Adolfo Carrion has the best chance of winning [the mayor's race] in November'."  (See  "KCRP Chairmam Craig Eaton's continued support for Alfonso Carrion for mayor could turn into a major embarrassment for the Brooklyn GOP and Republicans city-wide" posted below on SUNDAY, JANUARY 13, 2013).

In a later post on the same topic the following observation had been made ,    "...Brooklyn Republican Chairman Craig Eaton, who formally supports Adolfo Carrion, has had good things to say about Mr. Lhota; and since Carrion trailed badly in the Quinnipiac Poll, many expect that Eaton will quickly shift his support to Lhota" (See  "Today Joe Lhota announced his run to be Mayor of the City of New York on the Republican line --- Lhota already leads the Republican field by double digits" posted below on THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2013).

What is the point of not having a ticket anymore? Castimidis for Comptroller and Carrion for Public Advocate. It makes sense. Ticket would work further down in Brooklyn since Hynes is endorsed by Republicans. Hynes also has a base where he lives in Breezy Point and the Rockaways.

Breezy Point and the Rockaways aren't in Brooklyn.

Besides Hynes isn't yet endorsed for Kings County DA by the Brooklyn GOP for the 2013 election. One would assume that Mr. Capano's admonition that Republican leaders should not look outside the Republican Party to find Republican candidates should apply equally to any candidate(s) for Brooklyn DA; and the last time I looked Charles "Joe" Hynes was still formally a Democrat.

The problem with a "Republican Ticket", although it is a worthy goal and there is nothing wrong with doing it is that in a city 6-1 Democrat it is only the Mayoral race, and candidates, that get the media attention to allow a Republican candidate to get their name and views out there to overcome this party registration disadvantage. Much less attention is paid to the Comptroller and Public Advocate's race therefore making it much more difficult for a Republican- without the added media attention people will be more like to just vote for their party's candidate.

I wish i understood Mr. Eaton's thinking for supporting a non-Republican in Carrion so early. Even "if" as is widely expected Eaton does come aboard with an actual registered Republican now it will clearly be seen by that candidate and all others as coming late to the party after his many very public comments throughout the media hitching himself to Carrion.

There is also some more serious friction between and Eaton and Golden over this as Golden is a Lhota (Giuliani) guy.

As I pointed out in my 1/13/13 post, "KCRP Chairmam Craig Eaton's continued support for Alfonso Carrion for mayor could turn into a major embarrassment for the Brooklyn GOP and Republicans city-wide" -- Eaton and Savino had failed to move any of the other GOP County Leaders at the leaders' Staten Island dinner meeting. That should have ended the Eaton's GOP-Adolfo Carrion gambit. Without THREE (3)GOP County Leaders, Adolfo Carrion just isn't in the GOP race.

I don't know what Eaton might be thinking. With Lhota in the race, it's obvious that Eaton's guy, Carrion, couldn't win in a GOP primary; and there is no reason for Carrion to run in a primary that he loses by ten-to-one. How long can Eaton keep his money on a horse that's not even going to get into the GOP race?

btw, my Baker Street Irregulars tell me that the friction between Eaton and Golden isn't just over something like the Lhota and Carrion thing. The real friction is still somewhat hush-hush, but may go public soon.

If Breezy Point is in Queens than how does Brooklyn DA Hynes live there? I thought he had to live in Brooklyn.

Hynes official "residence" is in Bay Ridge I believe and his "second" home is in Breezy...

The rift between Eaton and Golden/Kassar is very very bad.

This post and comment thread isn't really about Kings County DA Hynes or who's going to be the KCRP candidate for his office, or if it's going to be him again.

There's still plenty of time between now, and endorsing, petitioning and possible primaries for DA and BP and Council seats, etc. Let's see what's going on and what happens closer to that time.
