To date, Eaton's flawed reasoning in backing non-Republican Carrion has failed to move a single other GOP County leader to back the former Bronx Democrat Borough President's entry in to the race as a Republican mayoral candidate --- While on a separate front, "the Carrion campaign remains on track" and is thought to have the inside track to get the mayoral nod from the Independence Party
According to Celeste Katz at the Daily News, the leaders of the New York City Republican Party haven’t yet been able to unite behind a single candidate for mayor. That raises the specter of a messy GOP primary in a GOP organizing year. Even though Brooklyn Chairman Craig Eaton and Bronx Chairman Jay Savino support giving ex-Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. the party’s blessing to run on the Republican line, Carrion, an independent, would still need the support of a third GOP county chairman to allow any Republican petitions for Carrion to be lawfully filed.
After weeks of jockeying by Eaton and Savino, it was obvious that Carrion's GOP candidacy had gathered no additional support when the five county leaders gathered last Thursday for a dinner meeting on Staten Island . Just as none of the other leaders made any moves toward his candidate, Eaton made no moves in their direction either, "We have a great, diverse group of candidates," Eaton said. "We would hope to have one slate, including many of the announced candidates, but it is too early to tell now it will play out. I still believe that Adolfo Carrion has the best chance of winning [the mayor's race] in November" (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2013/01/2013-update-after-latest-gop-mayoral-conference-we-dont-have-a-winner ).
Another source indicated that the only thing Eaton was certain about was uncertainty. According to Tom Wrobleski of the Staten Island Advance, "Eaton said the chairs would host a joint meeting with all the candidates in the next two to three weeks. *** 'It's unclear which direction we're going to go,' he said." (http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/01/optimism_about_mayoral_electio.html )
Remember, this is the same Craig Eaton who a few months ago was talking up Staten Island's Republican District Attorney Dan Donovan as a mayoral candidate --- the only problem was when Eaton spoke to Donovan about it, Donovan showed absolutely no interest in running for mayor.
Further complicating matters is the real possibility that even if Carrion does not get the Republican line, he could remain on the ballot as the nominee of the ever-more-controversial Independence Party ( See Jonathan Lemire's "Adolfo Carrion Jr. favorite to earn Independence Party endorsement for mayoral run," NY Daily News, 1/9/13 [http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/carrion-favorite-earn-independence-party-endorsement-mayoral-run-article-1.1236993#ixzz2HuLxnAhbIn ]). In that case, Eaton's personally favored candidate would be running against the GOP's city-wide standard bearer.

Has anybody bothered to ask Eaton why he thinks Carrion, a former liberal Democrat from the Obama Administration, would give the Republicans the best chance to win ?
Alfonso Carrion would be a horrible choice for the only areas in Brooklyn that sometimes actually vote Republican, like the ones that voted for Romney in 2012.
I have been watching this Blog for weeks and it seems like it is just an anti-Golden/anti-Eaton Blog.....
I dont understand Anonymous...who would you like to see get the GOP line. Lets go thru it...let me know who you would like to see run
Lohta and John K. - both middle aged white men who are the same old, same old
MacDonald and Allon - both are first time candidates who should not be running for Mayor in their first race
Smith has too much baggage but otherwise would be the top of the pack
Adolfo is the only candidate who has experience and as a Hispanic has a chance of beating the Democrats
Who do you like? Pls enliten me.....
You are either not observant by nature or not accurate by expression.
Your comment opened with this statement about your "watching" this blog, "I have been watching this Blog for weeks and it seems like it is just an anti-Golden/anti-Eaton Blog...." You seem to have done your "watching" to the detriment of your "seeing" or more accurately "perceiving."
First, EATON is the Brooklyn Republican Chairman, hence the avatar of the Republican establishment in Brooklyn; and second GOLDEN is the only Republican elected completely within the boundaries of Brooklyn; and based upon my years of interaction with GOLDEN and his closest supporters in the Republican and Conservative Parties, I believe that the Brooklyn Republican establishment under EATON runs only to benefit GOLDEN. So if you happened to read the name of this blog, you'd have seen "...Independent Republican..." that means in large part that this blog IS an anti-Golden/anti-Eaton Blog. So I commend you on your insightful grasp of the bloody well obvious.
Nonetheless, I am in a bit of a snit at your thoughtless use of the word "just" as in "only". First, I think that part of your observation is "just" inaccurate. Without knowing exactly how many weeks you are talking about, I cannot give you the stats on my "anti-Golden/anti-Eaton" postings compared to other stuff. However, I doubt that my "anti-Golden/anti-Eaton" stuff would be more than 10-20% of my recent postings.
I can't speak for someone, who like yourself chooses to comment anonymously. I do point out that my posting above did not favor or disfavor Mr. Carrion or any other possible GOP candidate for mayor; it only pointed out possible, even probable, pitfalls for Mr. Eaton if he should continue to express his support for Mr. Carrion, in the face of the non-support of a majority of the NYC Republican County leaders, in the way that Eaton has done up to now.
