Did the Main Stream Media make a huge gift to Mitt Romney, the Romney Campaign and the GOP by turning the September 11th Benghazi Attack into an “October Surprise”?

With senior State Department officials revealing certain details of last month's tragedy in Benghazi for the first time yesterday, the main stream media is finally being made to confront and report on several major issues connected to the September 11th attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. “Chief among them is why for several days the Obama administration said the assault stemmed from a protest against an American-made Internet video ridiculing Islam, and whether the consulate had adequate security.” (SF Examiner 10/9/12, 11:42PM)

In the days and weeks following the September 11th attacks on the Benghazi Consulate by terrorists probably associated with Al-Qaeda, most of the main stream media was reporting on the White House version of the events. Only a few outlets like Fox News were reporting on contrary reports and what was beginning to look like a major Obama Administration cover-up of what had really happened.

Now, even such liberal media operations as the San Francisco Examiner are now giving detailed reports about the events surrounding the deaths of a U.S. Ambassador and three other Americans connected to the Consulate, “such as the efforts of a quick reaction force that rushed onto the scene and led the evacuation in a fierce gun battle that continued into the streets,” all based upon a State Department briefing that was provided to the press just one day before State Department officials were to testify to a House oversight committee about the most serious attack on a U.S. diplomatic installation since al-Qaida bombed the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania 14 years ago. According to the SF Examiner’s account today, the State Department’s most recent “account answers some questions and leaves others unanswered. Chief among them is why for several days the Obama administration said the assault stemmed from a protest against an American-made Internet video ridiculing Islam, and whether the consulate had adequate security.”

According to the Associated Press, “All was quiet outside the U.S. Consulate as evening fell on Benghazi and President Barack Obama's envoy to Libya was retiring after a day of diplomatic meetings. ***  There was no indication of the harrowing events that night would bring: assailants storming the compound and setting its buildings aflame, American security agents taking fire across more than a mile of the city, the ambassador and three employees killed and others forced into a daring car escape against traffic.”

This morning Chuck Todd on his MSNBC “Daily Rundown” program stated that yesterday’s State Department’s comments appeared to put daylight between the U.S. State Department and other parts of the Obama Administration, like the White House. Also according to Todd, the State Department’s current position on events in Benghazi raised serious questions about the televised remarks of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, which had been given five days after the attacks. At the time Rice was giving the White House version of what had happened in Benghazi, calling them a copy cat of the demonstrations in Cairo against an anti-Mohammad video. According to yesterday’s State Department briefing, there were no such demonstrations in Benghazi before the "unprecedented" heavily-armed attack.

Today’s Congressional Oversight Hearings with State Department officials should provide more fireworks and heat that will have to be reported in the national main stream media. If any light is shed on the actual events surrounding the September 11, 2012 attacks on the Benghazi Consulate and American personnel by terrorists associated with Al-Qaeda, that would be a bonus going into the Biden-Ryan Debate tomorrow.
