FLASH UPDATE & BACKFILL: MORE DETAILS ABOUT THAT "ANONYMOUS LETTER" EMERGE

ABC SHOWS HOW THE  “ANONYMOUS LETTER”  DELIVERED ON FRIDAY PUTS SEVERAL CRACKS INTO THE CASE AGAINST CHANEL LEWIS

ABC NEWS IDENTIFIES THE ALLEGED SENDER OF THE BOMBSHELL ANONYMOUS LETTER AS A >>>  “LAW ENFORCEMENT SOURCE”

AN NYPD DEPUTY CHIEF IS QUOTED AS REPEATEDLY TELLING MEETINGS OF INVESTIGATORS TO   “…  [LOOK] FOR TWO JACKED UP WHITE GUYS FROM HOWARD BEACH…”

DETECTIVE LIEUTENANT JOHN RUSSO’S SUDDEN REVELATION LATE IN THE INVESTIGATION THAT CHANEL LEWIS SHOULD BE MADE A SUSPECT IS PUT INTO A WHOLE NEW GLARING SPOTLIGHT BY HIS FELLOW DETECTIVES

According to an up-to-date report from ABC News,   “….  Defense attorneys said that the three-paged typed letter pointed attorneys to several meetings among investigators during the first two weeks of the probe during which -- according to unknown author of the letter -- NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper ‘stated on several occasions at these meetings’ they are ‘looking for two jacked up white guys who are from Howard Beach.’…"   (See  “An anonymous letter from an alleged law enforcement source says Karina Vetrano's killers were 'jacked up white guys' “   by  Christina Carrega,  3/30/19,   ABC News   [https://abcnews.go.com/US/anonymous-letter-alleged-law-enforcement-source-karina-vetranos/story?id=62059077]).

The ABC News report also stated that a Legal Aid spokesperson said that   “….  We received troubling and reliable information indicating that the police withheld critical Brady information about other potential suspects, which was never turned over to the defense….   Moreover, we learned that the police approached our Mr. Lewis to obtain a DNA swab as part of a race-biased dragnet, which involved the swabbing of over 360 African-American men in Howard Beach and other neighboring sections of Brooklyn and Queens….   In light of this case-altering information, we plan to submit motions on Monday seeking a hearing as to the prosecution's failure to disclose this exculpatory evidence and a new hearing challenging the [New York Police] Department’s unconstitutional racial profiling throughout their investigation....”

Perhaps as significant as the other bombshell insights contained in the letter,   ABC revealed that detectives working the case didn’t think that Det. Lieut. John Russo’s attempt to specifically finger Chanel Lewis for special scrutiny was credible.  Here’s what ABC’s Christina Carrega said another detective on the case thought of Russo’s tip:   According to the three-paged typed letter sent to the defense team, after Lewis' sample was taken, one of the detectives ‘reported back to Lt. John Russo the following,  "He's not the perp. He's too puny and dimwitted."…   Nonetheless, Lewis was arrested, allegedly confessed and was charged in February 2017 with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse.'...”

MORE IMPORTANT BACKFILL: THE “PROSECUTION & OCME’S DNA EXPERT WAS THE LAST WITNESS IN THE CASE” EDITION

THE PROSECUTION RESTED AFTER THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER’S DNA SPECIALIST LINDA RAZZANO FINISHED TESTIFYING --- WHEN THE DEFENSE ALSO SUDDENLY RESTED, SHE BECAME THE LAST WITNESS IN THE RETRIAL OF CHANEL LEWIS

ACCORDING TO ONE KEY MEMBER OF THE PRESS --- “THE [DNA EXPERT’S] TESTIMONY SEEMED TO SOME COURT OBSERVERS TO BE…” >>> “POWERFUL” <<<

The following report by Anthony M. DeStefano of Newsday and amNewYork focused on a key element of the prosecution’s case against Chanel Lewis…..

A few days ago, Mr. DeStefano wrote this: “…. Earl[y] Thursday, Linda Razzano, the prosecution's final witness and also an official in the Office of The Chief Medical examiner, testified in detail about the DNA testing done in the case. In front of the jury and under direct questioning from Leventhal, Razzano, an expert in forensic biology, said genetic testing showed that DNA of an unknown male found on Vetrano’s neck and her cell phone matched with Lewis…. Razzano testified to essentially the same details as she did in the first trial and walked the jury through DNA lab procedures and related science…. By using a different method of analysis, Razzano said in Thursday testimony, the DNA found under two of Vetrano's fingernails was hundreds of billion times more likely than not to have come from her and Lewis rather than an unknown male…. In a different strategy from the first trial, [prosecution trial attorney, ADA Brad] Leventhal then brought out the concept of ‘secondary’ DNA transference— where DNA from one person may be transferred to a victim by a third person. Razzano said transference is a known phenomenon but her analysis of the amount of genetic material found on Vetrano showed that Lewis’s DNA had undergone a direct ‘primary’ transfer to the victim’s neck and cellphone…. Razzano underwent a some times contentious cross examination by defense attorney Jennie Cheung who questioned the expert about everything from lab practices to her reading of science journals. But Razzano insisted that while there is no ready test to say when DNA transferred to a person, the amount of genetic material found on Vetrano from Lewis was a primary transfer and not secondary from someone else…. At one point Razzano also noted to Cheung that ‘DNA doesn’t fly.’…” (See “Both sides rest in retrial of man accused of killing Karina Vetrano -- Final day of testimony includes a prosecution witness discussing the DNA evidence authorities say ties Chanel Lewis of Brooklyn to the 2016 killing” by Anthony M. DeStefano, 3/28/2019, Newsday/ amNewYork/ News [https://www.amny.com/news/howard-beach-karina-vetrano-1.29103053]).

It is very significant that in a later article by Mr. DeStefano, he wrote this about the Razzano DNA testimony: “…. [B]oth prosecution and defense attorneys rested in the case and following testimony of a DNA expert that Lewis’ DNA was found on Vetrano’s neck and cellphone. The expert testimony seemed to some court observers to be powerful….” (See “Anonymous Letter in Vetrano case draws swift response” by Anthony M. DeStefano, 3/29/19, Newsday/ amNewYork/ News [https://www.amny.com/news/howard-beach-jobgger-karina-vetrano-case-anonymous-letter-nypd-1.29146812]). That article by Mr. DeStefano also related part of what Razzano had said in her testimony to something that appeared in the so-called “anonymous letter” --- “…. The letter writer [ ] speculated that maybe Vetrano had dropped her phone and Lewis picked it up to give it back to her. Trial testimony showed the two never met and that her phone was swabbed clean before she went on her fateful Aug. 2, 2016, jog….”

RESPONSE: THE "MY FIRST IMPULSE IS TO CALL YOU A 'TROGLODYTE'..." EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 7:56 AM"

... BUT I DOUBT THAT YOU WOULD KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING ABOUT YOU; AND/OR, MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHY.....

Let me put it another way --- YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY A MOUTH-BREATHING MORON; AND PROBABLY YOU HAD TROUBLE COMMUNICATING WITH THE OTHERS ON THE SHORT YELLOW BUS THAT YOU TOOK TO YOUR "SPECIAL" CLASSES, WHERE A FOOTBALL OR MOTORCYCLE HELMET WAS A MANDATORY PART OF YOUR IN-CLASS GET-UP.....

EVEN MORE UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE “IN AN ARTICLE FILED ON SUNDAY, NY TIMES SCORCHES THE NYPD & QUEENS DA’S OFFICE IN THE ‘CHANEL LEWIS–KARINA VETRANO’ CASE” EDITION

N.Y. TIMES ARTICLE HAD LOTS TO SAY ABOUT THE FOLLOWING:

--- THE RACE-BASED DNA SEARCH ORDERED BY NYPD CHIEF OF Ds ROBERT BOYCE, LEADING TO "DNA DRAGNET" TESTING OF OVER 360 BLACK MEN

--- THE SPECIAL NYPD HANDLING IN THIS CASE, STARTED WITH PHIL VETRANO’S CALL TO HIS NEIGHBOR, JOHN CASSIDY, “…A CHIEF IN THE [NYPD],” WHEN MARINA VETRANO WAS LATE COMING HOME FROM A LATE AFTERNOON JOG

--- QUEENS DA’S OFFICE FACING CHARGES OF SERIOUS “BRADY" VIOLATIONS INVOLVING ALTERNATIVE SUSPECTS & ILLEGAL POLICE RACIAL PROFILING IN THEIR VETRANO MURDER INVESTIGATION

--- AND NEGATIVE COURT RULINGS ON DISCOVERY KEEPING EVERYTHING UNDER WRAPS

Here’s a very big takeaway from the NY Times article: “A Police Department spokesman said it was false that investigators had suspected two white men. But a person with knowledge of the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was true investigators initially thought the assailants might be white and that the police later had sought saliva samples from hundreds of black men in the search for the killer….[more details provided deeper in the article]” (See “‘Race-Biased Dragnet’: DNA From 360 Black Men Was Collected to Solve Vetrano Murder, Defense Lawyers Say” by Jan Ranson & Ashley Southall, 3/31/19, NY Times/ New York [https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/31/nyregion/karina-vetrano-trial.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage&section=New%20York]).

Ever since the New York Times article Phil " Cryin Phil" Vetranos Go fund Me donations stopped.

Anonymous said...

Phil Vetrano has raised almost 300k but his goal is 400k.

Just what is his goal?

Anonymous said...

So who gets all the money?

All that's happening in this case isn't about some $300K-$400K money scam, but that might be part of paying off for some of what is going on in this case.

LATEST UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE "APRIL FOOLS DAY" EDITION

THE LOCAL CBS NEWS SAYS THAT THE "ANONYMOUS LETTER" LOOMS LARGE OVER THE CHANEL LEWIS-KARINA VETRANO CASE --- BUT THEN ODDLY SUGGESTS THAT TRIAL JUDGE ALOISE MIGHT DEAL WITH IT >>> AFTER <<< A VERDICT HAS BEEN RENDERED IN THE RETRIAL OF THE CASE --- IS SOMEBODY PULLING SOMEBODY ELSE'S LEG, OR WHAT ?????

THE MOST RECENT CBS REPORT ALSO STRONGLY POINTED IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SO-CALLED "ANONYMOUS LETTER" COMING FROM AN NYPD "DETECTIVE"

According to this report by Lisa Rozner, "... Monday, defense attorneys plan to submit motions seeking a hearing based on an anonymous letter mailed to them, and the Queens district attorney on Friday. CBS News reported that the letter claims to be written by an NYPD detective.... The defense claims the anonymous letter demonstrates key evidence had been withheld during the retrial.... In a statement, the Legal Aid Society, which represents Lewis, said, 'We learned that the police approached our Mr. Lewis to obtain a DNA swab as part of a race-biased dragnet, which involved the swabbing of over 360 African-American men in Howard Beach and other neighboring sections of Brooklyn and Queens.'...” (See "Anonymous Letter Could Loom Large In Karina Vetrano Case" by Lisa Rozner, 4/1/19, 2 CBS/ WLNY 1055 News/ Local TV/ Queens News [https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2019/04/01/karina-vetrano-chanel-lewis-jogger-murdered-howard-beach/]).

In an odd twist that seems to step on her lead, Ms. Rozner also mentioned in her ultimate paragraph that --- "Legal experts said the judge could decide whether to hold the hearing [on any motions related to the 'Anonymous Letter' until] after a verdict comes down."
