One of our souces, close enough to the defense team to have been sent the actual E-mail, gave us a chance to look at something that has not yet been reported upon in the media --- an E-mail statement by lead defense counsel Dennis Kelly concerning the Ronnie Wright case and the actions of the Brooklyn DA's office during the ongoing "actual innocence proceedings" in Brooklyn Supreme Court :
"The district attorney’s office has repeatedly and deliberately lied in this matter in an attempt to validate the conviction of an innocent man. They concealed evidence at trial and continue to ignore all of the exculpatory evidence they have had for years which [evidence clearly indicates] that Ronnie Wright is innocent [of these charges]...."
Dennis Kelly then went further --- and he named names and cited ongoing wrongful activities by the Brooklyn DA's office:
".... More disturbingly [an ADA in the Brooklyn DA's office] Stewart was in constant contact with a witness the defense [had] been trying to subpoena yet [ADA Stewart did] not inform anyone that the witness had been actually and] obviously available. It is no coincidence that.... after ADA Stewart [informed Valerie] Smith of the hearing testimony [of another witness, and Smith called to intimidate that witness] ADA Stewart’s actions will necessitate his recusal as a [particpant] in this matter as the substance of his conversation with Valerie Smith certainly will be relevant [in the actual innocence proceedings involving Ronnie Wright], transforming [ADA Stewart] into a necessary witness in [future actual innocence proceedings involving Ronnie Wright, and] any [possible] prosecution of Smith for witness tampering...."
Defense lawyer Kelly concluded his E-mail statement with this:
".... [Brooklyn DA] Gonzalez’s handling of this matter is devoid of the basic ethical obligations of a prosecutor to do justice and reveal the truth. The DA has obfuscated and withheld evidence throughout this prosecution that has nothing to do with justice or the truth...." The statement above by the lead counsel in the Ronnie Wright case is just a small part of the wrongful malicious prosecution of Ronnie Wright since 2007 --- first by Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes, and now by Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez .....

In order to help prosecutors build their successful case against “G’z Up” gang leader Nicholas Washington, Morris confessed to committing two murders (ordered by Washington) in Bed-Stuy in 2005-6. One of the two people killed was Andrell Napper, an innocent bystander who Morris gunned down in a botched retaliation shooting outside the Tompkins Houses in August 2006.... Shortly thereafter, the Brooklyn district attorney’s office brought murder charges against two men for killing Napper, Stephon Williams and Ronnie Wright. During the preliminary hearings prior to trial, Williams changed his plea from innocent to guilty, but continued to implicate Wright. Williams, however, never took the witness stand at Wright’s trial.... In October 2007, a Brooklyn state supreme court jury convicted Wright of killing Napper. But amid the run-up to the 2019 federal trial, Wright learned that Morris had made statements to law enforcement officials shortly after the murder that were never turned over to his trial defense.... In the two statements, Morris denied he was a gunman and provided divergent accounts of Wright’s alleged role. The prosecution’s failure to turn over such potentially exculpatory material is a clear Brady violation, which may yield an overturned conviction.... All of these points raise a simple question: Why is Ronnie Wright still in prison, where he is not eligible for parole until 2044?..." Another witness was introduced in Ted Hamm's 2021 article; and she is described as "a woman with the surname Smith"; which is how Hamm describes her throughout the rest of his article. According to the complete Dennis Kelly statement (quoted but editted above), her full name is "Valerie Smith".
Even though a little of the skullduggery by witness "Smith" along with the described untoward activities by ADA Matthew Stewart was mentioned by Ronnie Wright's attorney Dennis Smith and in ted Hamm;s article, apparently Valerie Smith had a very particularized vested interest in participating in the Ronnie Wright trial for the murder that occurred in August of 2006. Valerie Smith was involved from the very beginning of the police investigation of the murders, continuing through 2006 and 2007, then she was with the Brooklyn DA's trial prep team during 2007, and then she provided key details for the prosecution by giving specific testimony at the trial of Ronnie Wright, all of which resulted in the specific outcome of that trial, as well as in the extremely long sentence given to Ronnie Wright early in 2008 for the August 2006 murder.
That vested interest was so persistent and intense, that Valerie Smith has been accused of continuing to give false testimony against Wright in 2021; which testimony was heavily contradicted by multiple witnesses; and also being instrumental in interfering with pro-defense witnesses up to and including in the current Ronnie Wright actual innocence trial, still ongoing into 2023. There has also been police testimony introduced in the Wright case that Valerie Smith was a paid NYPD informant prior to the incident of August 2006, and that relationshop continued during the Ronnie Wright trial for murder in 2007.
