In Staten Island there is a blast from Brooklyn's past running for the City Council in what's called the Mid-Island district

Folks in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights should well-remember Sal Albanese, long-time school board member, Democratic Party District Leader, City Councilman, and unsuccessful candidate for the NYS Assembly, the U.S. Congress, and Mayor for the City of New York

Sal is trying to get back into the New York City Council from the Mid-Island District of Staten Island after having served there as a Brooklyn Councilman from 1983 through 1997

Sal Albanese is a longtime political warhorse, who this year might disprove the old addage that "... there are no second acts in politics."

Like so many of us, Sal and his wife Lorraine moved from Southwest Brooklyn across "The Bridge" to Staten Island.  As a child, Sal Albanese emigrated from Italy with his family, and he became a local Brooklyn success story. After college at the CUNY, he became a NYC teacher, who then became a member of the local school board, ran for the NYS Assembly, became the Democrat District Leader for Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, was elected to the New York City Council by beating long-time Republican-Conservative Angelo Arculeo in a district, whose character and boundaries were very much like those of the current 43rd Council District in Brooklyn, except it was much more Republican and conservative then.
Now, in Staten Island, Albanese is running for the so-called Mid-Island City Council seat, which has long been held by Republicans.  Although it is in an area that voted for president Trump in 2020, it is also one that has elected a longtime moderate Democrat, Michael Cusick, as its legislative representative to the NYS Assembly.
Some observers believe that Albanese has more going for him than the other Democrat candidates that ran in the Mid-Island council district in previous years. In addition to still having a formidable campaign fund of over ninety thousand bucks ($90,507) available, Albanese has been endorsed by several law enforcement, firefighter and other municipal unions.
Also making the Albanese campaign more interesting in this rather GOP leaning conservative-minded district is that Sal has been campaigning on a strong public safety platform. It also doesn't hurt Sal at all  >>>  that he ran against Mayor de Blasio in two mayoral primaries. On the stump, Albanese has been telling voters, and anyone elese that will listen, that he believes de Blasio is the worst mayor New York City ever had.
Sal Albanese especially bristles at any and all Republican charges that he is just another Mayor de Blasio Democrat  ---  “I’ve always appealed to broad based constituencies. It’s been my approach every time I run for office.... Calling me a ‘Bill de Blasio Democrat’ is [ ] a joke.”
Although it might not count for much on Staten Island, it should also be noted that several times during Brooklyn State Senator Marty Golden's runs for re-election, Sal Albanese had been quite open in his support of the conservative Republican from Bay Ridge.
Another interesting facet that makes the campaign for this city council seat more competitive this time around is that there is a candidate named George Wonica,  a well-known Staten Island realtor, who is running in the Mid-Island City Council District on the Conservative Party line.  Given the fact that Staten Islander Bill Pepitone is also running for mayor on the Conservative Party line, Wonica could wind up taking a substantial number of  votes away from the Republican City Council nominee in the Mid-Island district, David Carr.  All of that is to the benefit of Democrat Sal Albanese.

Sal has won some and lost some. I think he wins this one. He stood alone against DiBlasio and that should count.

Sal is running for the seat held by GOP Steven Mateo. Mateo beat the democrat with 63% in 2013 and won with 79% in 2017. It sounds like an uphill battle for any democrat.

So much for Liam being so close with Langworthy as he always says .he cant even get him to endorse his candidate.

Most know see Liam is full of hot air and the stuff he drinks at The Lief which is within stumbling distance of his mother in laws house where he resides.

Liam's buddy Councilman Eric Ulrich who Liam also claims to be close with (despite pissing on his office carpet when drunk several years ago & getting fired from his job there) endorsed Steve Saperstein over the GOP candidate that Langworthy just endorsed. More proof that Liam has no juice in the GOP

Fox has been endorsed by the GOP and Fox is the future of the GOP. If you dont like it then leave the GOP like Manchin.

AND MEANWHILE BACK IN BROOKLYN [A RE-POST OF OUR RECENT "QUERY" ON THE PRIOR COMMENTS THREAD --- ABOUT TWO "GOP" CANDIDATES RUNNING IN ALMOST ADJOINING BROOKLYN CITY COUNCIL DISTRICTS, BOTH CONSIDERED TO BE COMPETITIVE]
_______________

QUERY: THE "IS THERE SOME KIND OF BIG PROBLEM HERE ???" EDITION

WHY IS THIS PARTICULAR ENDORSEMENT MISSING FROM THE BRIAN FOX LIST OF ENDORSEMENTS >>> NICK LANGWORTHY AND THE NYS GOP <<<

Just a few days ago, the GOP-Conservative Party City Council candidate from the 48th Council District Inna Vernikov tweeted this:

“…InnaVernikov for NYC @InnaVforNYC... Thank you Chairman of @NewYorkGOP... @NickLangworthy for your support and endorsement! And for traveling all the way from Buffalo! #votered...."

and there was this from the NYS GOP:

"... New York GOP@NewYorkGOP... City Council District 48 in Brooklyn is ready to elect ... InnaVernikov@InnaVForNYC... and bring much needed change to NYC. Chairman @NickLangworthy was proud to campaign with her today and fully endorses her campaign to restore common the City Council...."

We here at this independent Republican blog remembered no such similar announcement from Brian Fox and/or the Brian Fox for City Council campaign --- so, we checked back and looked very hard. Guess what ??? Nothing like that showed up on Fox's and/or his campaign's social media, on our internet searches, or even on Fox's own campaign homepage list of endorsements.....

So now, we do have to ask >>> WHY AT THIS VERY LATE DATE IS THERE SOME PROBLEM THAT'S HOLDING UP THE NYS GOP'S ENDORSEMENT OF BRIAN FOX'S CANDIDACY FOR THE NYC COUNCIL ?????

We think that a good person to ask might be Brooklyn GOP Chairman Ted Ghorra. >>> After all, he is only the Kings County GOP Chairman by the graces of State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy. --- And they were quite together there on the boardwalk, when Langworthy came to town to announce the NYS GOP endorsement of the Brooklyn GOP's Inna Vernikov, the now-jointly endorsed candidate for the City Council from the 48th Council District, which isn't very far from the 43rd City Council District neighborhoods where Brian Fox is running.....

But Ted needs to ask Gerry?

Ted is only a small part of the problem, and he and his problems are common to both Inna Vernikov and Brian Fox and both their campaigns. Basically, Ms. Vernikov is running a better campaign and getting better press coverage, and she is running against a weaker Democrat incumbent opponent than Fox has in his district. So she looks like she has a beter shot at winning on election day.

Her campaign has generally had more and better outreach than the one in the 43rd District. For Example, has Brian Fox ever had a campaign photo together with the two Republican District Leaders with the most EDs in the Council district where he is running, the 46th AD leaders Lucretia Regina-Potter and John Quaglione? Well, Inna Vernikov has. She has also been endorsed by two very different longtime conservative minded legislators that were institutions in their home districts Dov Hikind and Marty Golden.

There has to be a reason why more Republican office holders from outsiden the district have come in to appear and campaign with her, like Lee Zeldin, Nicole Malliotkis, and Joe Borelli, as well as the New York State GOP Chairman Langworthy.

The deals have been done. On January 1st Fox will be the minority leader.

Anonymous said...

The people who live in the Mid-Island district fled Bayridge in the 80s because they thought it was too "diverse" back then

Anonymous said...

940, RIGHT! The minority leader of the Republican Party in Bay Ridge.

Anonymous said...

Everybody hopes Brian Fox gets well soon.

Diversity is what makes Fox a perfect fit for minority leader.

109, the only "perfect fit" for Brian Fox is about 8 or 9XL.
