It sure looks and sounds like the “Leader” of Marty Golden’s GOP Caucus/Conference in the New York State Senate, and a fellow downstate GOP State Senator to Mr. Golden, is going to be facing some very serious music in a Federal Court next week
The New York Times is reporting that “Dean G. Skelos, the leader of the New York State Senate, and his son are expected to be arrested on federal corruption charges next week, according to people with knowledge of the matter. *** The expected arrests, coming roughly three months after federal bribery and kickback charges led Assemblyman Sheldon Silver to step down as speaker, would signal an extension of the investigation into allegations of political corruption in Albany, and would almost certainly further upend the legislative session....” (See “Dean Skelos, New York Senate Leader, and His Son Are Said to Face Arrest Next Week” [A version of this article appears in the print edition of NY Times on May 2, 2015, on page A14 of the New York edition with the headline: “New York Senate Leader and His Son Are Said to Face Arrest Next Week”] by Willaim K. Rashbaum, Suzanne Craig and Thomas Kaplan, 5/1/15, NY Times [http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/02/nyregion/dean-skelos-new-york-senate-leader-and-his-son-are-said-to-face-arrest-next-week.html?_r=0]).
Rashbaum, Craig and Kaplan continued by noting that “... [i]t is not known if Mr. Skelos, a Republican from Long Island who was first elected to the Senate in 1984, will resign his leadership post as did Mr. Silver, a Manhattan Democrat, but he is sure to face questions about his ability to lead the chamber in light of his expected arrest.... The prosecutors overseeing the investigation, from the office of Preet Bharara, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, have been presenting evidence to a grand jury for several weeks, some of the people have said....”
The NY Times article also noted that “... Senator Thomas W. Libous, the second highest-ranking Republican in the chamber, might otherwise be the leading candidate to take over, but he is also under federal indictment, and fighting cancer. Mr. Libous, who represents the Binghamton area, is accused of lying to federal agents during a corruption investigation.”
Several additional New York State Legislators, including Brooklyn GOP State Senator continue to be investigated by federal investigators led by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. The developments, as they have been reported by the New York Times cannot give any comfort to the subjects of the investigation nor give any reason to expect any easing-up on these cases by Mr. Bharara.
The importance of the Times story is reflected by the immediate repetition and echo of that reporting by several other news outlets — here are just a few at 1:20 AM EDT:
