What I think about the GOP campaigns for City Council in the 43rd District

All of the Republican campaigns appear to be slowly gearing up for what is clearly going to be an uphill fight to wrest control of the 43rd Council District from the Democrats  ---  how much time do these guys think that they have

As of this moment, the three GOP candidates are facing a three-way primary contest with nobody clearly ahead in ALL relevant metrics for a successful, victorious end to such primary campaign ---  and the victor in that GOP Primary then has to start-up all over again  ---  against a tough Democrat opponent

My eyeball estimates of the first fund raising events of the three announced Republican candidates for the City Council for Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and some surrounding areas have been confirmed by the candidates own photo arrays and statement  ---  at about 150-200 for Bob Capano, 65-75 for Will/Liam McCabe and taking the role as anchor-man John Quaglione at 45-50.

Those attendance figures are only a single metric in determining the early effectiveness of a campaign.  However, by that metric  Bob Capano is at least a little bit ahead and Liam McCabe has shown that he is a real candidate, with real support and that he is ready to rumble,  right now.   And, based on his small crowd in a small room near the end of 4th Avenue,  it looks like one of John Quaglione’s main arguments, raised at the Bridgeview Diner last week, has been blown out of the water (of course several of his side’s points were put into doubt, but one does stand out).   Maybe, just maybe,  Mr. McCabe and Congressman D should ask for a new meeting with Golden and Quags  ---  this time with Mr. Mack armed and ready for the mano a mano with whomever thinks they can put him down in any redux of a similar meeting.

WHEN IT COMES TO $$$$$ CAN ANY OF THESE GUYS BEAT OR EVEN CATCH UP TO BRANNAN ? ? ?

As a concerned Republican, I have a very important question that needs to be asked at this point in time; and it needs to be answered in due course before we get much deeper into a probable Republican primary bloodbath.  ---  Will the combined fund raising by all three GOP candidates for the NY City Council, as reflected in their upcoming filings,  equal or even come close to what has been done by Democrat Justin Brannan  ? ? ?  ( >>>  BTW,  you can completely forget anything at all by way of comparison to the cash-on-hand, without matching funds,  in the coffers of Peter Abbate)

REMEMBER,  FUND RAISING IS ONLY ONE METRIC OF A GOOD CAMPAIGN

The star power of Bob Capano’s guests seemed to glitter a little more than those who turned up for Will/Liam; but, I do have to give kudos to the Balto-boy’s quick roll-out of his endorsement by the local Republican Congressman, early on the “day after” McCabe’s pretty big night.

This points to where the McCabe campaign might have an edge  ---  professionalism.   Except for one featured speaker (who for some bizarre reason thought it was a good idea to revel about being charged with Neo-Nazi and Putin connections),  everything else about the McCabe campaign bash seemed quite professional.

The McCabe function was on time, on track and headed in the right direction.  Not only were there a raft of Republican and Conservative Party leaders in the house,  their  photos were quickly posted with “their candidate”  Will/Liam McCabe   (to be fair Bob Capano did the same with his “leaders and luminaries” a week ago).  Only John (the cheese stands alone) Quaglione posted a slideshow and a streaming video with virtually no recognizable notables (JQ's speech alluded to State Senator Golden's not being able to attend, implying that he would if he could  ---  unless he had just washed his hair).   It also needs to be pointed out that McCabe’s high quality HD, professional photography presented his affair in a much better light (and with better picture quality) than his two GOP counterparts, who to all appearances seem to have  relied on amateur cell phone and/or I-pad technology .

GOP CANDIDATES ALL NEED TO BE THINKING STRATEGICALLY AND PLANNING TACTICALLY

There will be an eventual winner of the GOP nomination.   That GOP candidate had better have the Conservative Party line if they hope to win…..

I don’t KNOW,  because we don’t talk anymore, but it does look like the NYSCP folks seem to have given an inside track there to Will/Liam McCabe.   Please, note well that I did say,   “DOES LOOK LIKE”;   and remember, sometimes, looks CAN be deceiving.   Neither Bob Capano nor John Quaglione can beat any Democrat in November 2017 without having the Conservative Party line  ---  both need a plausible route to get it.

All that having been said,  there really isn’t a lot of time between now and the heavy-lifting events like party endorsements, petitioning and petition challenges.   It remains to be seen what kind of organization and apparatus each of these GOP guys will have up and running for those body-and-soul-trying ordeals.  An early tip-off on some of that might be who wins the battle to line-up the top consultants and sharpest election attorneys.

Also, don’t forget that lurking out there somewhere are the likes of Pater Abbate, Justin Brannan and Kevin Peter Carroll,   all of whom should be capable of succeeding in a tough Democrat Primary and still coming on strong in November against any one of these probably exhausted Republicans.

If the time is over for a republican in bay ridge than how do you explain Golden?

I don't see how Gentiles problems in his district office dont become Justins problems.

Be honest GM, Capano had the smallest crowd out of all of them. That's why he didn't dare publish wide angle pictures. McCabe had a decent crowd but Q had the more bona fide contributors. All of this will become moot once the next financial disclosure comes out and we see which candidates have raised the most amounts of money. If Capano is not number one among the Republicans, he needs to drop out because he has been campaigning and raising money a lot longer than any of the other candidates Democrat or Republican.

I must agree with 6:49 PM because I am not sure what events you were at Gale but you've got the whole thing backwards. Quaglione had the biggest turnout by a mile with the entire main dining room at Positano (the old 101 Seafood) quite crowded if not "packed" and that was even with John Orlando's hideous job as the Master of Ceremonies and Bob Howe who should be put out to pasture. McCabe had maybe 40 people at the most over at Chef Andrea and likely rolled out the Donovan endorsement to distract the press from the terrible turnout. As for Capano, he had maybe 25-30 people at the Bean Post (I was one of them unfortunately) You couldn't fit 150-200 people at The Bean Post if your life depended on it Gale so don't piss on my leg and tell me its raining Democrat tears.

RESPONSE: THE "THERE IS A WORD FOR IT" EDITION

IT'S SIMPLE AND IT'S IN ENGLISH

Anybody who says that Capano's fund raiser didn't have at least two-, maybe even three-times more attendees than Mc Cabe's, and more than three- or possibly four-times as many as Quaglione's is just telling a lie.

I was at all three fund raisers; and I did actual head-counts at the two smaller events. As for the crowd in the Bean Post, when I arrived and was greeted at the door by a Capano operative, who ushered me passed the check-in table at the door, the Bean Post was packed from the front door to the rear of the back room. Whatever that number is, it is; but it was by far the biggest of the three GOP crowds.

Anonymous said...

Please be advised that Gale had an intern drive him to the above-said events. The intern, not a young man, can submit his expense records to verify this.

Anonymous said...

Was that intern wearing a blue dress?

Anonymous said...

GM you either have an totally incorrect recollection of these crowds, or you went to the Capano Fundraiser right before Sliwa spoke and to McCabe and Quaglione a couple of hours after their fundraisers had finished. You can call anyone you like a liar but the pictures have been posted on the various social media sites. If Capano fit in 75 people at the Bean Post Q would have called the Fire Marshal and had it cleared out. Q had by far the most donors of all the Republicans, followed by McCabe and coming in a distant third was Capano. We will find out later in the month who's right won't we?

Anonymous said...

Lets remember the raw dollar amount is only part of the next filing. It's how much is matchable along with how that will be spent. Capano and Quaglione may have learned from past mistakes. I dont remember Capanos race but I remember Quagliones and it was such a fiasco. Everybody knew that except Quaglione.

RESPONSE: THE "YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT SOMETHING" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 9:44 PM"

You're right the pictures have been posted..... And none of those pictures, nor all of them together, show that Quaglione had 50 people at his Positano party..... They cover almost every angle, and even with overlapping and double counting there aren't fifty people in that not so big room to the right of the entrance.

Something interesting has come up. And it's something that all the GOP candidates not named McCabe need to ask themselves >>> How could McCabe afford to hire Jerry O'Brien; and how could Capano and Quaglione afford not to have hired him ? ? ?

Anonymous said...

The point made in posting reflects the fact that GOP numbers have consistently declined. And there is the Trump factor. Trump did awful in Brooklyn. The impact is it may be tough to convince people to vote for a republican with Trump around. Maybe he won't be around.

Anonymous said...

It's spelled Jerry Kassar and Gerry O'Brien.

One of them knows how to spell his first name, but it depends on which one you ask.

Anonymous said...

Hillary Clinton is not going to be the nominee in the 43rd and I don't think any of the Republican candidates are going to run Trump style. Very winnable race for GOP.

RESPONSE: THE "MC CABE HAS BOTH G/JERRY'S ON HIS SIDE" EDITION

OOPS ! SOMETIMES THE OLD SYNAPSES DON'T WORK QUITE RIGHT PAST MIDNIGHT

YOU SAY "GERRY" -- I SAY "JERRY"; GERRY SAYS "GERRY" -- JERRY SAYS "JERRY"

There's a Jerry here, a Gerry there, Jerry, Jerries (Gerry, Gerries) everywhere..... In either case, Will/Liam McCabe seems to have them both on is side. That was my point..... Not a finer point of a "J" or a "G" in front of "...erry"..... From now on I'll call them both "Terry".....

But what will I now call my friends named Terry ?

UPDATE: THE "SAY, HEY !!!" EDITION

HAS THE MARTY G COUNT-DOWN JUST STARTED FOR REAL

DONOVAN'S ENDORSEMENT OF MC CABE IS THE BIG D'S FLEXING HIS MUSCLES IN BROOKLYN

"New York City’s Only Republican Congressman Looks to Flex His Political Muscles At Home" that's how Will Bredderman's small note with a big headline in the "Observer" put it.....

A finer point is that '... at home" definitely means in Brooklyn. This isn't a brush-back pitch, it's a fastball directly at Brooklyn Republican Marty Golden's head.

More important, it is the first real fall-out from the infamous Bridgeview Diner meeting.

When Golden next takes the mound and Donovan is at bat, Golden will have to decide whether he wants to fight or play ball.

My guess is that John Quaglione will be told that 2017 isn't his year.

Anonymous said...

Its about time Marty Golden is taking down a few notches..what is surprising is that Kassar is playing a direct role.

Anonymous said...

Kassar is neutral. At least for now.

RESPONSE: THE "DEEP DIVE ON MC CABE'S GATHERING" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 11:02 AM"

Okay, you say that NYSCP Brooklyn Chairman Kassar is "...neutral...for now."

Riddle me this, Batman: Who is Kassar "neutral for" or "neutral against" ? ? ?

Maybe this is an important thing to think about. In addition to Jerry Kassar and Mike Long's being at McCabe's fund raiser, but so was NYSCP Executive Member David Ryan, who sounded like a solid Will/Liam McCabe supporter to me.

There's a parallel story when it comes to the Republicans. Not only was Kings County Republican Chairman Ted Ghorra at Mr. McCabe's event, but so was Brooklyn Republican Executive Member and Vice Chairman Brian Doherty; and I've heard it on the best authority that Brian and Will/Liam are close.....

keep in mind that until last year McCabe was a conservative party member.

Donovan endorsed McCabe and Marty has not endorsed Quaglione. Looks like Donovan let Marty know whose in charge

Anonymous said...

Dan Donovan's entire Brooklyn office comprised of MG loyalists and conservative party members. This whole thing is gonna play out like Grimm and Allegretti where Kassar and Conservatives win no matter the outcome. If Liam wins, Donovan looks good and MG will be said to have supported him all along behind the scenes, if Q wins Donovan will look like a fool and spend even less time in Brooklyn than now, MG fine with that obviously. Total win win for MG and Jerry with a J, gotta hand it to em they know what they're doing.

Anonymous said...

Gail, why haven't you reported on an important tip that you were given about Bob Capano and Ted Ghorra being heard arguing during the mayoral forum at the golf course. I know you were told that Ghorra tried to scold Capano for not 'properly kissing his ass...' and that Capano told Ghorra to 'shove it'.

You sat on this for days, so what's your excuse.

Anonymous said...

4:45 (we know its quag) says if "Q wins Donovan will look like a fool".

Hey Johnny Q. Look in the dictionary under small potatos and they have a picture of you. Like Donovan really gives a shit about a stupid council race.

Anonymous said...

To 4:45 Dear currently disgruntled and former Hynes patronage hire. The fact that Donovan endorsed shows that he cares very much about this race. Can you imagine how bad it would look for a Congressman to come out an endorse a guy beaten by someone who is being supported by a local State Senator?

RESPONSE: THE "I HAD MY OWN REASONS" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 8:24 PM"

No excuse is called for..... I knew if I waited and nothing appeared, somebody close to the horse's mouth would mention something. I was right.....

BTW, I also heard that Ghorra told Capano that he had made a big mistake in publicly naming Craig Eaton as part of his team.

Anonymous said...

ghorra is still around.

i thought antibiotics killed that off

Anonymous said...

Capano's dose of ghorra was obviously drug resistant.

Donovan lent his name to Liam and that'll be that. Donovan isn't going to campaign with Liam or lift a finger for Liam. Donovan felt he had to repay the favor for years of bad, part-time service from Liam "sick days" McCabe and now he thinks he's done with that chapter. What else does Donovan owe Liam? Let's not forget that newly elected Donovan didn't even want to keep Liam on pay roll after Grimm went to jail. My friends, all of this is why Quaglione will win. Capano doesn't even live in the district for chrissakes!

Anonymous said...

Johnny Orlando has some spcial plans for Mr. mcCabe that will force Donovan to withdraw his endorsement of McCabe I hear..

Anonymous said...

Johnny Orlando might want to tread carefully.

I hear Q's aunt got a real sweetheart deal from Hynes after that incident with the dead baby.

You or I would have gone to jail for something like that.

Anonymous said...

To 6:08. Donovan didn't want to keep anyone around from the old Brooklyn Grimm Office but Golden laid down the law. It took a while and Donovan waited as long as he could for posturing before he hired the same Office staff that Grimm had. How often does that happen? There was not one person from the Grimm Office who didn't stay on. Endorsing Liam is Donovan's meek way of trying not to look like Marty's Brooklyn Puppet.

Anonymous said...

Hold on there! Are two of the gossipers above really saying that both 'John Q Very, Very Private" and 'Mr. Mack the Dog-Whisperer' are already threatening their side's version of the "nuclear option"? Get a grip, it's only some day in early March.

Anonymous said...

Oh, Gail Baby, I almost forgot. The other day I overheard Liam's biggest bomb-thrower in a diner in Bay Ridge. You know, the one with the bright red hair and the protective orders. She was proclaiming, in a voice that didn't need any amplifiers, the big lie that Bob Capano doesn't live in Bay Ridge, the not so big lie that John Q is campaigning while on Marty's payroll, and hopefully the truth that Liam has given up drinking since he started to campaign.

Earth to LIam, Earth to Liam, this woman is broken glass; don't play around with her or YOU WILL GET CUT BY HER. Just ask Andy S; remember, he was running against John Q, a while ago until he took a deal from Marty and Kassar. Boy, what problems he had with that redhead.

Is this Orlando fellow the attorney John Joseph Orlando described as follows on the legal website Avvo? (see www.avvo.com/attorneys/11228-ny-john-orlando-918853.html)

"I retained Mr. Orlando to handle my divorce. He was extremely neglectful and disrespectful to me the entire time I worked with him. I ended up settling with my ex-just to begin my life, but he did a poor job advocating for me. Every time he was supposed to send paperwork out to court, he would tell me there was another outstanding bill. His office was disorganized and took a couple of weeks to put the bill together. After my case was finally settled, he charged me to file the final paperwork and to go to court to pick up my divorce decree. I called the office on occasion to get an update as to whether my decree was signed and his assistant Pat kept dismissing me and rudely told me that the process could take up to a year. In the meantime, my divorce decree had been sitting in the courts signed for months, but my attorney's failure to follow up caused me not to know. My divorce has been complete for over 6 months now and he has yet to inform me, but he still has my money."

UPDATE & INQUIRY: THE "THIS COULD BE SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THE CAPANO CAMPAIGN" EDITION

THE NAME "ROB RYAN" APPEARED ON A RECENT BOB CAPANO PRESS RELEASE AS THE CONTACT PERSON --- THE CELL PHONE NUMBER THAT FOLLOWED WAS THE SAME AS THE ONE FOR THE MANHATTAN REPUBLICAN PARTY COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, ROBERT "ROB" RYAN

Has the Capano Campaign made a new addition to his campaign staff --- OR --- is this just a head-fake by "... the leading Republican candidate for Brooklyn's 43rd Council District" to make his staff LOOK more professional, and cause fear and confusion among all of his opponents and detractors.

THIS COMMENTER POSTED HIS/HER COMMENT IN THE WRONG PLACE, WHERE IT MADE NO SENSE AND CONFUSED AT LEAST ONE READER --- SINCE I LIKED IT AND THINK OTHERS AMONG MY LOYAL READERS MIGHT TOO, I COPIED IT HERE ON THE THREAD WHERE IT BELONGED ALL ALONG

HERE IT IS:

12:11 PM seems to be describing somebody very familiar to lots of Brooklyn Republicans who were active in the court fights over the leadership of the Brooklyn GOP.
This "red head," as you describe her, is a solid member of the Golden faction of the Brooklyn GOP; if I read 12:11's descriptions and warning to Liam correctly, she would appear to be another key Marty Golden Republican who is backing Liam McCabe.
You would have to agree, Mr. Massey, would you not.

Both of these red heads are certifiably bonkers. Red Head # 1 that stalked Hard Hat Andy and Red Head #2 that currently works in Dan Donovan's 13 th Avenue office both indeed appear to be supporting Liam and certifiably bonkers

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... MARCH 9, 2017 AT 12:11 PM"; "ANONYMOUS SAID... MARCH 9, 2017 AT 3:30 PM [REPUBLISHED ABOVE ON THIS THREAD BY ME "... AT 9:37 PM"]; AND "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 3:44 PM"

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU --- POSITIVELY INTRIGUING, TWO REDHEADS FOR WILL/LIAM MC CABE --- AND BOTH OF THEM CAPABLE OF ACTING..... WELL..... LIKE REAL REDHEADS !!!

You really can't make-up stuff like this..... So, it must be true.

Therefore, in answer to the final question posed by "ANONYMOUS SAID... MARCH 9, 2017 AT 3:30 PM [REPUBLISHED ABOVE ON THIS THREAD BY ME "... AT 9:37 PM"], it does look like your conclusion is right. However, since you obviously didn't know or acknowledge that there might be two different redheads, your reasoning was probably incorrect.

So in answer to your question --- NO, I don't HAVE to agree --- Let's just say, I sort of agree a little bit.....
