Demonstrators go after State Senator Golden’s “divisive” and “racist” comments about who’s hooked on opioids

Article in Brooklyn Eagle Reports on how Golden’s remarks were found to bespeak a “reprehensible” and “racist” outlook

AFTER HIS BOSS’S SALT-IN-THE WOUND ATTEMPT TO APOLOGIZE  ---  JOHN QUAGLIONE STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE PINCH-HITTING FOR MARTY  ---  AND STRUCK-OUT  ---  HIMSELF

Even old Bay Ridge-ites are starting to wonder if Marty Golden and his staff are getting to be too much of an out-of-date embarrassment to the neighborhood

According to a report appearing in print editions of the Brooklyn Eagle starting today  ---  “….   The remark, made by state Sen. Marty Golden (R-Bay Ridge-Southwest Brooklyn) to the Brooklyn Eagle in an article published on Jan. 23, has since angered a portion of his constituency….   ‘It’s not a ghetto drug,’ Golden said of opioids. ‘It’s happening to doctors' kids.’…”  (See  “Small but vocal crowd gathers outside Golden’s office to protest ‘ghetto drug’ remark”  by Scott Inman,  1/29/18,  The Brooklyn Eagle   [http://www.brooklyneagle.com/articles/2018/1/29/small-vocal-crowd-gathers-outside-goldens-office-protest-ghetto-drug-remark]).

The Eagle’s reporter,  Scott Inman,  said that this is what happened next:   “….   On Monday afternoon, a group of roughly 20 attendees gathered outside the senator’s Bay Ridge office to condemn the ‘racist comment.’…   The Working Families Party, the Alliance for Quality Education and the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) organized the rally….”  According to Mr. Inman’s report,    on Friday,  Marty Golden  was in Albany during the rally.

Golden earlier had attempted to “apologize” for his comment:   "To anyone who was offended by my choice of words regarding the heroin and opioid crisis facing our state, I sincerely apologize."

The State Senator’s near-sightedness and dated ways of thinking were there for everybody to see  ---  TWICE  ---  once,  in the original gaff;  and then again in Marty Golden’s gaff-like attempt at an apology.   Instead,  of apologizing to everybody,  the State Senator did one of those non-apology-apologies only to  “…  anyone who was offended by my choice of words…”  Obviously,  Golden didn’t see that his so-called apology was equally discriminatory and segregationist to the original bad  “…choice of words…”  (more on this below).

ANOTHER EPIC FAIL FOR QUAGLIONE

Here’s how Golden’s main flack John Quaglione tried to deal with all of it  ----  "Today, as Senator Marty Golden was in Albany discussing key issues facing New York State, including boosting the economic vitality of the gaming industry, his two Democratic opponents joined a handful of local fringe groups members for a ‘protest’ outside his district office.…   As we enter into an election cycle, uninformed criticism of Senator Golden's efforts to fight against heroin and opioid abuse, secure pivotal funding for local schools and more, is to be expected.”   No acknowledgement of his boss’s gaffs,  no mention of the inherent racism in his boss’s remarks,  and no attempt to factually address any of the issues raised by the demonstrators…..

THE DEPTHS OF THE PROBLEMS GOLDEN HAS BROUGHT ON HIMSELF

One only needs to look at the final eight paragraphs of the Brooklyn Eagle coverage,  which stands out like an epilogue,  to see the fix that Marty Golden is in.

This isn’t some Paula Katinas’ pro-Bay Ridge puffer  ---  this is a hard hitting attack on State Senator Golden  ---  and  the fact that it appears in  >>> The Brooklyn Eagle <<<  ,  a solidly pro-Golden local paper,  is not insignificant.

In some of those eight paragraphs, the article quotes one of the demonstration’s organizers,  Dionna King,  who called out Marty Golden with this:   “….   Golden is conflating being offended by his comments with the need for him to account for his comments….   They are not just something that is harmful to say. It’s not only morally reprehensible to harbor these feelings, he’s a lawmaker and because of that he should be held to a different standard.’…   I think he considers that the most egregious action was the hurting of people’s feelings, and while that’s part of it, what more people are angered by are the ways in which  >>> his feelings  << upset the communities that he is responsible for as a lawmaker….”

There were additional critical quotes from two of State Senator Golden’s potential opponents in 2018  ---  Andrew Gounardes and Ross Barkan.

However, the most exquisite attacks on Marty Golden’s “devisive” and “racist” remarks came in the video of the demonstrators themselves,  which was linked inside of the Brooklyn Eagle article.

Aside from Barkan and Gounardes there were a total of 8 “protestors” outside Golden’s Office. The same fake groups and losers used by Justin Brannan for years.

Anonymous said...

Wait a minute, I don't think that Justin's name was mentioned until you just did. At any rate, didn't Justin B win every time that he has run? Then it seems like those 'fake groups and losers used by Justin Brannan for years' do have a useful function.

This is really going to hurt marty with the african american voters in bay ridge and marine park

Anonymous said...

If Justin didn’t have the ConCon and the torrential downpours he wouldn’t have won anything. He almost lost to Quaglione in a place that Justin claims is solidly democrat. He used his fake social media accounts and bogus groups to lie about El Yateem and barely won his primary. All those groups yesterday claiming they were organizing a massive demonstration and they had five people show up, so basically more groups than people.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Q is the councilman

Anonymous said...

He very nearly was. Ominous for Brannan next time around.

Anonymous said...

Nothing involving Justin is as you say, 'Ominous' if John Quaglione is involved. Q is done in elective politics; he hasn't figured it out yet, and Marty and Jerry haven't told him.
Oh, SHHHH! Please whisper, little Johnny Boy is sleeping so confidently and comfortably.

Anonymous said...

Justin won by 500 votes with a ConCon referendum bringing out Dems in droves and with his fake twitter accounts and fake groups operating under the radar. Now he’s been exposed—oh and the teddy bear trial hasn’t even started yet. Stick a baster in him cause that fat turkey Justin is done.

Anonymous said...

Diblasio was a drain on the ticket. In 4 years the remaining GOP will be less. Justin will be a well known incumbent. Things only get better for Justin.

Anonymous said...

Rosemarie O'Keefe had her excuses for her narrow loss to Vinny Gentile too. However, the reality is that except for some appointment gimmies, after narrowly losing her run for the City Council, she was done in politics. Johnny Cakes is a two-time loser --- the second time to Justin B. So, there isn't likely to be any next time for Q.

Anonymous said...

To 8:50 DeBlasio was at Justin’s inauguration and put his vast resources behind Justin the puppet who is more liberal than DeBlasio. The more people learn about that fat turkey Justin and the hangers on that he is hiring while getting rid of Gentile best staffers will come back to haunt him.

Anonymous said...

Rosemary O’Keefe was a legend who died of cancer way too early in life. There were problems with her campaign against Gentile but losing to him by three or four votes literally is nothing to be ashamed of. Let her Rest In Peace and offer examples that aren’t ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

Ross Barkan and Gournardes are shoring up Martys base with this.

Anonymous said...

Maybe, but so what? The Bay Ridge of Marty's old base isn't there anymore.
Tarring Marty as a racist does him no good at all.
That Marty's "apology" doubled down on his initial theme of separation and segregation will distress a majority of the voters in the senate district of all castes and hues.

Gail, there are only a couple of Bay Ridge guys who are on the upswing politically.
They are Justin Brannan and Bob Capano.
And, you Gail, have been with them all along.
The question begs, how did you know?

Couple of necessary corrections:

5:54 PM: This is really going to hurt marty with the african american voters in bay ridge and marine park

While there are small but growing numbers of African American voters and their families in both neighborhoods, the real danger to Marty is that white voters throughout his district have begun to feel uncomfortable with their leaders using racially divisive language. Call them guilty white liberals, guilty white moderates, and in more than a few cases, guilt white conservatives. Bottom line: a lot of white people are tired of racial politics by white politicians.

6:09 PM: If Justin didn’t have the ConCon and the torrential downpours he wouldn’t have won anything.

Justin nearly blew it because he was overconfident, and his kitchen cabinet (like most liberal Dem campaigns) had too many people with too little campaign experience weighing in on every mailer and press release. Wiser heads would have had Justin pounce on Q for his "women who have abortions are barbarians" remark, with a reference to women who toss babies in garbage cans (like Q'as cousin did) being the real barbarians. Oh, and the last time Marty polled REPUBLICANS in his district on abortion, more than 65% of them wanted abortion to remain legal. Not a typo: Female Republicans in Marty's district wanted to keep abortion legal by a 65-35% margin.

9:02 PM: Rosemary O’Keefe was a legend who died of cancer way too early in life. There were problems with her campaign against Gentile but losing to him by three or four votes literally is nothing to be ashamed of.

Nice lady, but she and everyone else (but Rudy Giuliani) knew she wasn't physically up to the rigors of an aggressive campaign for City Council, but she let Rudy browbeat Marty and everyone else into nominating her. Scores of early evening events and appearances at public meetings were canceled as she tired early and often, and the seat was lost, probably forever.

That is all. Have a quality day.

Anonymous said...

"small but growing african american voters"?

Try getting a map of the district.

Anonymous said...

Try walking around Marty's district. The black folks you'll see there aren't somebody's maid or driver.

Justin had seasoned hacks on the campaign and De Blasio staff holding his hand. Q had a decent staff but had to deal with Jerry Kassar interfering with his campaign and making a fiasco out of the Election Day pullout where even Ted Ghorra tried acting like a chairman and intervening. Without Kassar’s bungling Brannan might have lost a gimme. McCreight and Yedin knew this was their only chance to get real jobs and were foaming at the mouth, they pulled out all the stops and it still almost fell short.

FLASH NEWS UPDATE: THE "COCK-BLOCK STRATEGY" EDITION

A KEY PERSON IN THE REFORM PARTY HIERARCHY HAS DESCRIBED FOR ME ONE OF THE MAJOR STRATEGIES THAT THE NEW REFORM PARTY TEAM INTEND TO USE TO BUILD UP THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE MAJOR PARTIES AND GO DIRECTLY AT THE CONSERVATIVES' ATTEMPTS TO DEAL WITH CERTAIN DEMOCRATS

Since the Conservative Party has openly made it known that nobody that accepts the Working Families Party line can get the Conservative Party endorsement, the Reform Party sees an opportunity and an advantage to be had. Saying to certain candidates (mostly Democrats, but also a handful of Republicans) that having the Working Families Party line and the Reform Party line would be advantageous compared to just having the Conservatives' line is a very good selling point.

It is so good, that the Reform Party might well adopt it as a major selling strategy statewide. In any case, some of the the Brooklyn Reformers especially like it.

[ There will be more of the Reform Party's special tactics and strategies in upcoming commments and posts. ]

Good analyses Gale. If The Reform party endorses Grimm it can neutralize the conservative line backing of Donovan. The WFP can never seem to get anything filed on time.

Anonymous said...

Goldens remarks were so hurtfull. Next he'll be criticizing MS-13

Anonymous said...

Marty can be beat but not by these two running.

Anonymous said...

Depending on what and how State Senator Martin Golden talked about people who are MS-13 members, he could easily and rightfully be accused of racism and bigotry. In fact, given his track record, it's more likely than not that ANYTHING that Marty G might have to say about MS-13 would LIKELY be racist, bigoted and/or stupid. You know that unfortunately for the Brooklyn GOP, Marty Golden doesn't choose his words as carefully as President Trump does.

UPDATE & PREVIEW: THE "MORE TO COME" EDITION

ONE OF MY TOP BSIs MET WITH A TOP BROOKLYN REFORM PARTY LEADER YESTERDAY AT A BAY RIDGE WATERING HOLE NOTED FOR ITS BURGERS THAT RHYMES WITH "FLIPPINS"

SEVERAL POSSIBLE TACTICS AND STRATEGIES WERE DISCUSSED --- INCLUDING A POSSIBLE PARALLEL ORGANIZATION FOR REFORM PARTY SUPPORTERS THAT WISH TO REMAIN ENROLLED IN THE REPUBLICAN DEMOCRATIC OR CONSERVATIVE PARTIES

My faithful reporter told me that:
The newest Reform Party Chairman is sporting an almost "Duck Dynasty" density beard..... And that he likes "Stella" and IPAs.....
The re-organization of the Reform Party in Brooklyn is part of a statewide effort in advance of the 2018 gubernatorial year campaign to get the Reform Party a "continuing" line on the ballot throughout the state.....
That Vinny Gentile's strong showing in Brooklyn in 2017 (over 30,000 votes on the Reform Party Line), his ongoing community involvement, his other activities, his obvious political and professional ambitions, and his manifest interest made him an instantaneous possibility to top the Reform Party Ticket in New York State in 2018.....

THAT'S ENOUGH FOR NOW --- BUT THERE IS LOTS MORE COMING

Anonymous said...

Gail, I thought that all 'Cousin Vinny' is really interested in is getting a judgeship from de Blasio or Cuomo.
Meanwhile, why are your lips sealed when it comes to a real live statewide candidate for the Repubs against Jilly-jilly, NYC Republican Chele Chiavacci Farley?
Farley seems like she's all set to go and already has some strong support in the party.

REMEMBER WHEN I SAID >>> "ONE OF MY TOP BSIs MET WITH A TOP BROOKLYN REFORM PARTY LEADER YESTERDAY AT A BAY RIDGE WATERING HOLE NOTED FOR ITS BURGERS THAT RHYMES WITH 'FLIPPINS' "; AND FINISHED BY SAYING >>> "THAT'S ENOUGH FOR NOW --- BUT THERE IS LOTS MORE COMING" ???

DID YOU THINK I WAS KIDDING ?????

..... One of the things ykw said to my top o' the line BSI was that some people have suggested that State Senator Marty Golden might have to go through a multi-step process before he gets his "interview" by the Reform Party --- things like participating in a mandatory debate with all other declared candidates for the state senate in the 22nd SD..... (if you ask me, its my opinion that the moguls at the top of the Reform Party truly WANT Marty Golden to reject their selection process out of hand)

..... Craig Eaton's name came up repeatedly between the slurping of soup, slamming of sliders and the swilling of suds by my guy and that certain somebody, who should now be the clarion voice of the Reform Party in Brooklyn..... Of course, why wouldn't Eaton's name have come up ??? ... Just like several other respected Republicans (and Democrats) did in a discussion of fund-raising efforts.....

Anonymous said...

It doesn’t matter what the Reform party does. Marty Golden always manages to make the right deal. It’s not coincidence that the only two guys running against him are legends in their own minds and no one else knows who they are or cares to know. Along with Justin’s fake twitter groups they were exposed when couldn’t get more than five demonstrators outside of Golden’s Office on Monday. Game over another big win for Marty.

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID AT... 11:45 PM"

DO YOU MEAN THAT FORMER CITY COUNCILMAN VINCENT GENTILE INTENDS TO PRIMARY KIRSTEN GILLiBRAND ????? I REALLY DOUBT THAT..... IS EITHER WHAT YOU MEANT AND/OR HAS ANY TRUTH TO IT AT ALL.....

My earlier comment yesterday indicated that some in the Reform Party had talked about Vinny Gentile's running on their line for governor against Andrew Cuomo, because he had drawn over 30,000 votes in Brooklyn alone during his last run >>> in 2017 >>> on the Reform Party line >>> for DA in Kings County.....

Since I had mentioned earlier the possibility of Mr. G's running for a statewide office against a fellow Democrat, your use of the word "senate" alone was vague. I'm sure that you meant that you HEARD that Vinny G. was running for the State Senate seat that he once had held. Frankly, I didn't hear that..... However, what I did hear is that the Reform Party has talked about the POSSIBILITY of Gentile's running for the State Senate in the 22nd SD, and that he probably would be their first choice for that slot on their line if he did choose to run.

CAPANO AND GENTILE WERE COZY, COZY AT THE BRANNAN INUAGURATION

... but as far as I know, there were no deep kisses and no bodily fluids were in evidence....

NONETHELESS, WHAT IS A FACT IS THAT BOB CAPANO'S CLOSER TIES WITH MANY OF THE DEMOCRATS THAT WERE AT THE BRANNAN BASH, INCLUDING MOST IMPORTANTLY BRANNAN HIMSELF, IS PART OF AN EMERGING NIGHTMARE FOR KASSAR, QUAGLIONE, AND ESPECIALLY MARTY GOLDEN..... Also, once somebody explains some of this stuff to him, Ted Ghorra, as well.

Both Vinny and Bob go way back, and both have risen from their respective political graves more than once --- they are like the UNDEAD politically..... And soon they might be coming for ykw.....

RESPONSE: THE "WHAT 'Q AND MARTY' ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ???" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 6:07 AM"

SURELY, YOU AREN'T REFERRING TO STATE SENATOR MARTIN GOLDEN AND HIS VERY, VERY LONG-TIME STAFF MEMBER, JOHN QUAGLIONE..... FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER, OR WHO CAN TRAVEL IN THEIR WAY-WAY-BACK-MACHINES, IT'S MUCH MORE LIKELY TO BE "SPIN & MARTY" THAN "Q AND MARTY"

RUMOR HAS IT --- AND THE ANSWERS TO SEVERAL OF MY INQUIRIES IS THAT --- THERE ISN'T ANY MARTY AND JOHN TEAM IN AND FOR A 46TH AD RUN --- AND WHETHER THAT MEANS: "YET"; "NOW", "AT THIS TIME"; "SOON"; "NOT VERY SOON"; "ONLY AT THE LAST SECOND" OR EVEN "EVER" [MEANING "NEVER"] IS YET TO BE FINALLY DETERMINED

The PEOPLE to whom I made my direct inquiries are not among my usual BSI crew; and they were surprisingly quite responsive. However, they have cluttered all of their "responsive" swill, spill and sconner, with so many layers of non-attribution and non-identifying safeguards that all I think I can safely say about John Quaglione's current level of support by his bosses, Marty Golden and/or Jerry Kassar is this: some people claim to know something, they told me something about it, they didn't want to give me too much detail, and don't even make those disassociated details public right away (meaning "for a few days" at least).

BTW, "Sheinkopf" --- REALLY ????? In a race for the 46th AD, FOR REPUBLICAN-CONSERVATIVE JOHN QUAGLIONE ??? Even if the esteemed Mr. S wanted to take the job for a valued old customer, and that is MORE THAN DOUBTFUL, to quote "The Right Stuff" >>> "No bucks, no Buck Rogers..." !!!!!!!!!!!

RESPONSE: THE "THERE ARE NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE WHO WILL NOT SEE" EDITION

TO: "[ANOY]NYMOUS SAID... AT 7:43 AM"

I GUESS YOU ARE ALSO THE SAME NOBEL LAUREATE THAT KEEPS ON SAYING THINGS LIKE BOB CAPANO STILL LIVES ON STATEN ISLAND, AND THAT HE ONLY GOT 1% OF THE VOTE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION ON THE REFORM PARTY LINE --- AND KEEPS ON SAYING IT, AND KEEPS ON SAYING IT, AND KEEPS ON SAYING IT, AND KEEPS ON SAYING IT, "... ETC., ETC., ETC., AND SO FORTH... " [YES, FROM AN OLD SHOW TUNE !!!]

--- LET ME EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU SLOWLY ---

In 2017, Gerry with a "G," not Jerry with a "J" (sort of like "Liza with a 'Z' not Lisa with an 'S'; which, in turn, is sort of like a show tune), had the ruggedly handsome Liam McCabe as a client in 2017 for some matters. Gerry with a "G" did not "run" Liam McCabe's campaign, at least not for very long. If anybody actually "ran" Liam's campaign, it was Liam himself. Truth to be told, it was really a Hydra-headed affair with Liam taking everybodies' advice and then making the final decision by fiat. Or as somebody said a while back --- "It was basically a 'bunker mentality' without the benefits of being in a bunker".....

Next --- in the primary, by the end --- it was a binary contest between Liam McCabe and John Quaglione. Nonetheless, both Bob Capano and Lucretia Regina-Potter did have an impact. All during the campaign the two "also rans" (which on primary day became three "also rans") kept both John Quaglione and Liam from getting any real ono-on-one traction, against each other. In fact, MANY people (including me) thought that it would be a three-way race right to the end. With less than great one-on-one traction, the net benefit is to the one who started out somewhat ahead, that was John Q.

John Q had these advantages going forward: He was the most recent prior on the ballot GOP-Conservative candidate for the City Council in the 43rd District, having run in 2013. Liam was a new "Republican"; and to many old GOP hands, Laim's candidacy, and it's obvious and undisguised Conservative Party support, had the look of a raid on the GOP.

Eventually, it was made clear that JQ was Marty Golden's chosen candidate in 2017; and Marty G actually DID STUFF for John Q during the 2017 primary ( and who would have predicted that ???). John Q actually upped his game as a candidate (going from wood to plastic); although several people from his campaign say that he is still a terrible campaigner, he was more comfortable at the debates.

In the end, Liam's "Little Campaign that Could" >>> couldn't; Capano's big-money campaign, with big & open support by YKW, didn't materialize; Lucretia's "base" continued to shrink; and the only one moving forward at all was >>> JQ.

In November, it was a campaign of worse and worser --- with a bunch of divided Democrats fighting it out with remnant of divided Republicans. The overall election and ballot dynamics favored Justin Brannan, but who did have the significant weight of de Blasio-drag to carry. JQ's campaign never could figure out this --- WHERE DID MARTY GO ????? As a result, Justin squeezed out a close, but definitely clear, win.

Sheinkopf did this, Kassar did that, maybe they didn't do something else..... That's part of every campaign, even winning campaigns.

All I know is this about 2017: lots of people came up short; one person won; but nobody --- NOBODY --- kicked anybody's ass, or showed themselves "... to be kings of the Brooklyn GOP...".

Anonymous said...

Gale you need a lot of new sources. That’s all I’ll say about that. As for Q, Sheinkopf firm was handling Q race. Sheinkopf handles New York State Senate Republicans. Kassar took over last couple of weeks of campaign, and cost Q the election by directing pullout effort that suggests idiocy, lunacy, or a deal with Justin.

Anonymous said...

God Bless John Orlando, the new top Brooklyn GOP consultant..I can't wait for his next GOP primary victory in the 46th AD over Steve Saperstein and anyone else .
