How’s this for a headline: “Prosecutor in Garner case ponders Grimm seat” ?

That was the way the AP decided to put it right out there on Yahoo News

It probably could fly pretty well in Staten Island and Southwest Brooklyn   —   However, do Boehner insiders in the GOP congressional caucus and the rest of the National GOP Establishment want that albatross around their necks through the 2016 elections ?

Boehner called Grimm’s decision to resign “Honorable”  —   But he might also see the selection of Donovan to be the GOP candidate as going from the frying pan into the fire

According to an AP headlined article that appeared on Yahoo, “Potential candidates eyed a Staten Island congressional seat Tuesday as Republican Rep. Michael Grimm announced his resignation, following a guilty plea on tax evasion charges. ***   Among the possible candidates is a Staten Island prosecutor who oversaw a case in which a white New York City police officer was cleared in the death of a black man in an apparent chokehold. Two state lawmakers [Republican Nicole Malliotakis and Democrat Michael Cusick] and a former congressman [Democrat Michael McMahon] who was unseated by Grimm could also be interested in the open seat....” (See “Prosecutor in Garner case ponders Grimm seat” by Matthew Daly, 12/30/14, Yahoo News/ AP [http://news.yahoo.com/guilty-plea-ny-congressman-resign-142032217.html]).

The Yahoo/AP article by Matthew Daly repeatedly pointed out that Republican Dan Donovan was the prosecutor in a case in which a Staten Island Grand Jury cleared a white New York City police officer in the death of Eric Garner, a black man, after Garner had been placed in an apparent prohibited choke-hold; and that Garner's death touched off nationwide protests and was one of two police killings cited by a gunman who murdered two New York City police officers earlier this month. It was also mentioned that Donovan is considered the front-runner among the several potential GOP candidates for Grimm’s seat.

  1. UPDATE: THE “SHARPTON FOLLIES QUICKLY INVOLVED IN THE 11th CONG. DIST. RACE” EDITION

IS AL SHARPTON TRYING SOME KIND OF VULCAN MIND MELD — OR IS IT SIMPLE REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY — OR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

Things just got a whole lot better for Dan Donovan. In fact, on the “Good - Better - Best” scale, this might be solidly in the “Best” category of things that might happen for any Donovan for Congress effort.

This appeared in the NY Daily News: “The Rev. Al Sharpton said Tuesday that if Republicans choose Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan to run in a special for Congress, it would roil protesters angry over the death of Eric Garner in police custody. *** ‘It would almost be seen as rewarding someone who has become the national symbol of what we are fighting.’...” (See “Donovan's selection as congressional candidate will backfire on GOP, Sharpton says” by Dan Friedman, 12/30/14, NY Daily News [http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dc/sharpton-da-national-symbol-fighting-blog-entry-1.2061320?cid=bitly]). Hmmm, a personal feud between AL Sharpton and Dan Donovan played out over the Staten Island-Southwest Brooklyn congressional seat — I wonder how that will go ?

Even Sharpton has to know that sticking his nose into the Staten Island-Southwest Brooklyn congressional race cannot help the Democrats win the seat; and more likely it will hurt them badly. So what’s really going on inside his head ?

  2. I'm convinced Sharpton is on Donovan's payroll

  3. It's all about fundraising.

Donovan's candidacy will jumpstart a major Democratic fundraising campaign nationally ("help us stop that racist DA from going to Congress"). Oh, and the ten or 15 million they raise will never be spent against Donovan. The Democrats will bank it, and wait to spend it on a future congressional race somewhere else, where they know they have a shot.

Anyone notice how today's newspaper headlines in NYC all refer to the "Eric Garner Prosecutor" running for Congress? They've tagged Dan, and he's going to win, but will forever be known that way.

  4. I am beginning to wonder why the GOP has been so quick to rally around Donovan and give no serious consideration to Nicole Malliotakis. Is this the usual Republican sexism rearing its ugly head? Although she is young, Nicole is a viable candidate. Some gender bias here? I'm thinking so. Didn't you guys do the same thing when looking for e Weiner seat replacement? Overlook entirely competent women in lieu of mediocre men. If the Women's platform grabs onto this then it could doom a Donovan run against a Democrat.

  5. Is this the crazy Democrat broad, Dorothy, everybody talks about?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Donovan is running which explains why Hynes has been rounding up his old crew for lunch at the Bally Bunion

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh, I thought it was the Wicked Monk? But "old crew"? from Bay Ridge? Wonder who exactly he's rounding up. Word on Jay Street is that Gerry's cronies all flipped on Yer Man, you know, in lieu of no prosecution themselves. But that's just legal jibber jabber - who knows for certain . . .

Democrat Broad . . . and she's broad where a broad should be broad. :)

  8. Hynes Bay Ridge crew couldn't even get Bay Ridge to vote for him.

  9. oh yeah Dorothy. the woman of staten island will unite to elect some tree hugging save the lesbian Sandinista whales for congress.

  10. Why is Thompsons top prosecutor Ken Taub having lunch with Joe Hynes?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Getting their stories straight on the John Giuca case maybe? Ken Taub initially had the case until the elite team of Nicolazzi and Vecchione stepped in. The Giuca review has been completed by the Conviction Review Unit and by all accounts the fallout should be devastating legally and politically. Many were hoping for a pre-Christmas announcement.

Perhaps they were discussing how they were going to throw Nicolazzi under the bus? But that shouldn't be hard - it's a big bus, plenty of room . . .

    ReplyDelete
  12. Also, can anyone here explain why Cusik or McMahon did not run against Grimm in this past election? Why was Recchia the guy? And don't necessarily assume the Garner case will work to Donovan's benefit. Now with the Scalise/David Duke/KKK affiliation having both Scalise and Donovan could really hurt the GOP. But it will help Hillary and that is the end goal.
If I were Nicole I would cozt up with Kassar and Long as they could get her on the ticket. It seems that way at least.

  13. What has Governor Cuomo said about any of this?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Who cares what Governor Cuomo has to say about anything. He issued no pardons today. He granted no clemency. We do not like him nor care what he has to say.

Governor Martin O'Malley commuted yesterday four death sentences to life in prison. That's America. Our New York governor has given us nothing. For shame. There are many women in Bedford Hills who should be getting ready to go home and Andrew could very well make that happen. But he has chosen the coward's role. So who cares what he has to say.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There is no special election for Grimm's seat unless he says so. That means Grimm gets replaced after the next regular election.

    Now, how's them apples?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Cuomo has never called a special election yet. He had a dozen chances to do it, however, Mike Long had no interest in any of those dozen races.

Long has an interest in this one.

  17. Linda Sarsour has tweeted that she and her group of grassroots activists are going to vigorously oppose Donovan. I am not sure if that has any legs but she does seem to have a very large following in Brooklyn and interestingly they seem to be mostly men.

Gale, tweets come from twitter which is a form of social media. You seem to be a bit of a Luddite so I share that with you.

The Brooklyn Dems are saying its Cusik.

Pardons... shmardons... if you can't do the time, don't do the crime...

Luddite, LUDDITE !!! Luddites were technical-industrial saboteurs; the only things I ever sabotaged was my own career, my first marriage and several close friendships.

As far as I know, there are no Trotskyites that comment on this blog. I asked them; and they said they were Lev Bronshteinites....

As Joe E. Brown (as Cap'n Andy) famously shouted out, "Haaappy New Year -- Haaappppy [Hic !] New Year...."

  20. UPDATE: THE “WHAT’S IN A NAME” EDITION

Show of hands ! Who agrees with this: “O’Donovan appears to have a lock on the GOP nomination.” (See “Rudy Giuliani hits the campaign trail with Donovan” by Carl Campanile, 12/31/14, NY Post [http://nypost.com/2014/12/31/rudy-giuliani-hits-the-campaign-trail-with-donovan/]) ?

Nonetheless, it appears that Rudy Giuliani thinks that Dan Donovan smells as sweet as a rose and will be doing some sonnets on Staten Island for him. Maybe, he and Juliet can do a duet of Rogers and H's "No Other Love [Have I]" (not to be confused with Jo Stafford's completely different song).

    ReplyDelete
  21. Me and Juliet was a flop. A hollow vacuous production with no story line and nothing to say. It was panned. Hence, a good analogy you made to Guliani.

Perry Como sang the song not Jo Stafford.

  22. RESPONSE TO MY LEV BRONSHTEINITE FRIEND: THE "HUH ?" EDITION

AKA THE "MORE THAN YOU REALLY WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT IT" EDITION

What part of "...not to be confused with Jo Stafford's completely different song...." did you not get ?

Como's version is truly great, and Ronnie Hilton made a hit of it in England with the same arrangement; but nothing comes close to Robert Russell Bennett's orchestral version with the strong tango beat, "Under the Southern Cross" from RR's "Victory at Sea Suite." And the most stirring version of that is its reprise.

  23. Gale, you should post about the NYPD work slow down. I'm not Republican but this is surely a moment when our Mayor would do well to follow Reagan's response to the air traffic controllers disruptive and illegal behavior back in the 80's. I think Reagan fired all eleven thousand of them. Don't you think DeBlasio should do the same with these errant officers who by slowing down are creating a danger to the citizenry? I never ever thought I would agree with Ronald Reagan on anything but now I see the wisdom in his actions back then.

  24. UPDATE: THE “VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS” EDITION

BROOKLYN YR CLUB ANNOUNCES SUPPORT OF NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS FOR CONGRESS

On New Years Eve, Brooklyn Young Republican Club President Glenn Nocera released the following statement regarding the impending vacancy in the 11th Congressional District:

“Nicole Malliotakis has been a dedicated and passionate representative for the people of Brooklyn and Staten Island. She has brought a fresh perspective to Albany and has been a voice for our generation, focusing on issues including skyrocketing college loan debt, that have been forgotten by many. Nicole is supported overwhelmingly by the community she represents and, this year, garnered an overwhelming 73% of the vote [in her race to retain her seat in the NYS Assembly] in a swing district. She is a dynamic elected official and is our club’s choice for United States Congress [for the 11th District running from Southwest Brooklyn into all of Staten Island].”

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wasn't Grimm his choice just a few weeks ago?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Is this the Craig Eaton officially sanctioned Young Republican group or is it that oddball schismatic off-shoot? If it is the former I think the statement has merit and could possibly even be taken into consideration by that one important man on Staten Island who will determine the candidate. If it is the latter then I do not think it will serve Nicole well.

  27. Young Republicans?

Some looked a little long in the tooth.

Whats next, the Gene Berdelli anorexic support group?

  28. ANOTHER RESPONSE TO A LEV BRONSHTEINITE "FRIEND": THE "OH MY !" EDITION

TO: COMMENTER "ANONYMOUS 3:55 PM" -- SO MANY MISTAKES (EVEN ONE IN THE FORM OF A QUESTION), SO FEW WORDS... SO FEW IDEAS

Glenn Nocera, "...officially sanctioned..." by Craig Eaton ! What informed comment maker on this blog would even suggest such a thing ? In fact, Nocera, as an elected executive member of the Brooklyn GOP, sued Craig Eaton and the rest of the Brooklyn GOP to set aside Eaton’s selection as Kings County Republican Chairman. Maybe, that was "...officially sanctioned..." by Craig Eaton, as well.

"...oddball schismatic off-shoot..." ! -- The Brooklyn Young Republican Club, which now has Glenn Nocera as its President, was founded in 1880, and had as its first president Seth Low, who quickly became Mayor of Brooklyn, then President of Columbia University, and eventually Mayor of New York City among many other accomplishments and honors. In the last two election cycles, every major GOP candidate for NYC Mayor or NYS Governor has spoken at the Brooklyn Young Republican Club and was introduced by Glenn Nocera. (Ms. Malliotakis is scheduled to speak at the Brooklyn Young Republican Club Meeting at Hunters Steak House on January 18th).

However, regardless of any of the above, all of the “former” and “latter” chatter by the Lev Bronshteinite commenter “Anonymous... 3:55 PM” is a lot of nonsense. This endorsement of Nicole Malliotakis is very unlikely to influence events. Mr. Nocera acknowledged that fact to me; and he said the endorsement was made as a matter of principle.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Young Republicans was founded in 1880? I guess that explains why they don't look so young.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gale, if you go into the official New York State Young Republican website and click Kings County you will see that the other BYR group is linked. Hence, that must be the officially sanctioned group representative of the voice of Brooklyn. That is the group that bears Craig Eaton's imprimateur. And it is the BYR group that I think you would prefer to align with. It is easy to confuse the two because of the name. I did that also until the difference was explained to me. Gale, don't confuse the good folks with the bad!

    ReplyDelete
  31. RESPONSE: THE "MIX 'N' MATCH" EDITION

    "GOOD FOLKS" - "BAD..." - "... CRAIG EATON'S IMPRIMATEUR [SIC]...." - "... PREFER TO ALIGN WITH...." !!!! WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT ?

I think that some Lev Bronshteinite has made too many wrong presumptions.

Where I come from, lunch and a general party invitation is nothing like a betrothal or even holding hands.

Of course I don't know what Margaret Mead might say about it, since some commenters have noted that she studied "...other life forms..." Here we quote and venerate Margaret Thatcher not Margaret Mead.

    ReplyDelete
  32. "...Official New York State Young Republican website..." What nonsense! There are plenty of court cases that say there is no "Official" Young Republican anything. Several places in New York State have multiple Young Republican clubs.

GLENN NOCERA’S ENDORSEMENT OF NICOLE M GETS RECOGNITION AND PROMINENT MENTION IN S.I. DAILY’S ARTICLE ABOUT GOP SUPPORT FOR CANDIDATE

Rachel Shapiro of the Staten Island Advance gave Glenn Nocera and his Brooklyn Young Republican Club the “Full Monty” treatment, publishing his club’s endorsement of Nicole Malliotakis verbatim on the S.I. Advance blog yesterday; and it will probably appear in the print format of that paper today (See “Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis 'getting a lot of encouragement' to run for Congress” by Rachel Shapiro, 1/2/15, SI Advance/ silive.com [http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2015/01/assemblywoman_nicole_malliotak_7.html] [rshapiro@siadvance.com / Email the author | Follow on Twitter]).
