Eaton versus Golden “One” — The Re-cap

“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
                                      –  Winston Churchill

[ Second of Two Posts about the 2013 GOP County Convention  ]

September 30, 2013  marked a watershed in the history of the Brooklyn Republican Party. Following hard fought petitioning, the BOE and court challenges period, a hard fought and well-funded pre-primary campaign between two competitive mayoral candidates, and a full-scale post-primary pre-convention proxy fight, with everything from multiple mailings and personal phone calls from Brooklyn’s only remaining elected Republican officeholder; the combined  live and proxy vote total for all sides at the 2013 GOP Kings County Convention was the lowest in recent memory.

The Golden forces came to the 2013 GOP County Convention ready to play and expecting to cast over 600 votes for Timothy Cochrane. The Eaton forces showed up ready to go to war and finesse about 450 votes. A third group, formally aligned with neither Golden nor Eaton, the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Club came to the table with a little over a hundred votes in their pocket, perhaps leaning toward Eaton, but ready, willing and able to make a deal.

After a significant series of flaps involving proxies held by Diane Rudiano, late arriving proxies brought in by several non-delegate Golden operatives, and the previously submitted proxies held by the Convention Credentials Committee led by Gene Berardelli were hashd out; all proxies were submitted to the Republican Convention Credentials Committee for review and certification.

As told to me by some of those in attendance, 565 proxies were submitted to the Credentials Committee for Golden (the original text of this post stated "556" as a result of a transcription error), 428 proxies for Eaton, and 98 were submitted naming Lucretia Regina-Potter. Eventually, the Credentials Committee reported to the Temporary Chairman of the Convention Gerry O’Brien that 329 Eaton proxies, 270 Golden proxies and 68 Regina-Potter proxies were found to be valid by the Credentials Committee, in addition they certified that about 100 people, who had presented themselves at the convention were duly elected Members of the Kings County Republican County Committee. Chairman O’Brien accepted the report of the Credentials Committee; and he then proceeded, with more than the required quorum of delegates present and valid proxies to attempt to conduct the other normal convention business. He was interrupted by loud and disorderly shouting by almost all of the Golden folks, who made up more than two-thirds of those in the hall.

According to one press report, Golden had presented 565 proxies and  “...a four-person body appointed by Eaton to decide the legitimacy of proxies — threw out 295 of the [Golden proxies] before they could be counted, arguing that the proxies were invalid because Golden had collected them before the convention was officially called [for Sept. 30th] on Sept. 24....”  (See “Curses and accusations fly at Republican chairman election smackdown” by Will Bredderman, 10-1-13, Courier Life/ Brooklyn Daily [http://www.brooklyndaily.com/stories/2013/40/all_brooklynrepublicanconvention_2013_10_04]).  Bredderman described some of what followed, like this:  “Things got nasty when Golden stood up to protest the maneuver.... [And] Golden, Cochrane, and their backers continued to shout motions for all the proxies to be counted — motions dismissed by GOP strategist Gerry O’Brien, who acted as temporary chairman during the convention....”

My sources tell me that several different demands and propositions were advanced by the Golden faction, many being shouted simultaneously on a few were made in the form of motions from the floor. One of the clearest that was made in the form of a motion came from Diane Rudiano, who called for a division of the “vote” of the Credentials Committee so that its members could be polled as to each of the disallowed Golden proxies. Others were shouted out without seeking any recognition by the Chair or any other formalities required for making a motion. It has been indicated to me that O’Brien was advised by his Counsel, Aaron Maslow, that such motions were out of order. On that basis, Chairman O’Brien announced that no motions relative to the actions or report of the Credentials Committee would be entertained.

After the demonstrations and other disorderly activities following the O’Brien rulings resulting in the rejection of almost half of the Golden proxies had subsided, speeches were made by the candidates for Brooklyn GOP Chairman.

The “Republicans for Change” challenger, Timothy Cochrane, spoke about the need for change and that the current leadership had lost the support of the most active members of the party. And then Craig Eaton, the incumbent Kings County Republican Party Chairman, spoke out against how outsiders and certain insiders had engineered the goings-on leading up to and at the convention. There were interruptions of both speeches (but see the first comment below for another opinion of the events), but Eaton’s was certainly the more confronted, perhaps because it was the more personally confrontational. At least that was the way that Glenn Nocera saw it.

The actual vote had a drama all its own. At a key moment, Lucretia Potter announced that the 46th AD LaGuardia Club was “passing” its vote.  At that juncture it was clear that the 68 proxies that she held, together with about another four or five voters in the room, held the balance. By passing Ms. Regina-Potter held enough votes to elect either Cochrane or Eaton. In the end, Eaton sought out the votes of the LaGuardia Club and Cochrane did not. The votes were cast — Eaton won.

According to the Bredderman article in the  Courier Life/ Brooklyn Daily, Tim Cochrane and the rest of the Golden faction indicated an intention to pursue legal action against the GOP to force it to count all the votes tossed-out by the Credentials Committee.  Cochrane himself blasted the discarding of Golden’s proxies as a naked attempt by Eaton to cling to power saying, “I’m disgusted with the process.... There’s no respect for the system.”

In a telephone interview, Glenn Nocera, a newly elected District Leader and the President of the traditional Brooklyn Young Republican Club put it to the “temporary winner at the convention” this way:

“Count every vote, Mr. Eaton. ***  Is this the only way you know how to win an election ? Is it alright with you to disenfranchise fellow Republicans, who worked very hard to get on the County Committee ?   ***  That convention was a sham. This year’s election of the County Chairman of the Republican Party reminded me of  Third World dictatorships and how they like to run their elections.” Then in what sounded like very stentorian determination and resolve, “I have every confidence that what happened on Monday, September 30th will be overturned by any court of law that looks into it. If they have any sense of justice and decency, they will see to it that all the people’s voices will finally be heard at a properly run convention.”

Similar sentiments accompanied each and every statement made by any of those who supported Golden and Cochrane at the convention.

Golden’s winning opponents stressed that any attempt to bring the matter to court would fail. Furthermore, they said that it showed Golden to have been completely brainwashed by the same people who pushed Golden to take Eaton out of the Chairmanship of the GOP in the first place.

It’s safe to say things don’t look like they’re over by a long shot.

One correction: Cochrane's speech was not interrupted at any point by the Eaton forces. However, the Golden forces shouted at Eaton during his speech, interrupting him and attempting to prevent him from being heard.

I think someone needs to speak to Glenn Nocera. He is a State Committeeman who showed up looking dressed like a homeless man with a baseball cap and he looked drunk. He was slurring his words and screaming like a mad-man. Is this what Golden really expected from his hand-picked District Leaders. Is this the best we can do. Isnt he 40 years old...shouldnt he leave the YR's.....maybe even get some YR members under 35 before he leaves. And he claims to be a police officer...he is a school security or safety officer...wow, that is just like being a Mall Cop isnt it? Funny, he supported Lhota when Nocera is only a Mall Cop himself.

That was a horrible costume......

It is funny how Golden and Cochrane cry over the decisions made by the Credentials Committee, yet they tried to steal the election themselves thru illegal actions, which includes threatening BOE employees with the loss of their jobs and making up lies and stories about Eaton. what is good for the goose is good for the golden

Golden and his allies say they want to run into court over this. Has anybody on his side talked this over with any lawyers? I'm not an attorney, but I've seen plenty on TV, which makes me about even with the whole Golden crowd -- possibly ahead of some. Couldn't Golden and Cochrane and Rudiano and Shamoun and Kassar and Clorinda and Riley and the rest all be called in as witnesses to be cross-examined about what they did, said and knew about the Republican County Committee Convention, mostly before and during, but even after.

Anonymous at 11:20am, you are correct. If Golden goes into Court, Eaton would file his own action and all the idiots would be brought into Court to discuss (1) petition shredding - I hear D Annarumo has his fingerprints all over that; (2) the threats and intimidation of BOE people - some by the Senator himself; (3) the fact that BOE employees were given time off from work during business hours to collect Proxies; (4) the fact that many BOE employees attended the Convention the day before the runoff election and BOE people who sere supporting Eaton were not allowed to take off - that is why Golden has more people at Convention than Eaton; (5) Golden telling everyone "I control the BOE now - you guys dont want to go against a sitting senator, do you?; (6) the party raiding that Kassar has been doing, especially setting up, suppporting and attending Rep For Change events and in his column in the newspaper urging people to do things; (7) the fraud perpetrated by Golden, Kassar, Cochrane and the RFC group; (8) the libel slander and deffamation by Golden of Eaton, when it all came out that Eaton was not involved in the Smith case - it was Isaacs all along; and (9) the libel slander and deffamation by Cochrane telling a lot of DL's and others that he has personal knowledge of Eaton and criminal behavior....wow I just want to SCREAM at all these bad things these criminals did.......I almost hope Golden does sue - so that I can watch ALL these issues come out into the mix...

LOOKING FOR BACKFILL: "DON'T YOU HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS" EDITION

I wish I could get some clarity on a pre-convention matter that's been brought to my attention recently. Actually, I can't tell if this is two separate rumors or one that grew in the telling and re-telling.

Among the endorsements that I might have expected Tim Cochrane to have obtained was that of the GOP Mayoral Candidate Joe Lhota. Looking back, as best I can, it's apparent that the "Republicans for Change" wanted everybody to think that Lhota had endorsed Mr. Cochrane, but that never really happened.

Here's where the "Tale of Two Rumors" gets into it. One has it that none-less-than our esteemed State Senator Martin Golden worked Joe Lhota very hard to back Cochrane right up to the eve of the 2013 Brooklyn GOP Convention. We all know how that worked out -- at least we know there was no endorsement ever announced. The second rumor has somewhat more detail. According to that version, when Golden specifically asked Lhota to do the endorsement, Lhota specifically said NO; and Marty G. had one of those "Don't you hate when that happens" moments.

I have no specific words or phrases, but I'm told it was a real thing kind of melt-down. Real enough that Kings County Republican Chairman Craig Eaton is confident that an overture by him at this time will lead to bigger things with Mr. Lhota and his campaign.

If anybody has actual knowledge about any of this, could you let the rest of us in on it.

Golden/Kassar lied to everyone telling them that Lhota endorsed Cochrane.

UPDATE [OR IS IT BACKFILL]: THE “YOU TELL ME” EDITION

“Let’s be honest. Did you hear anything about...” this post on the Brooklyn Young Republican Club website (“Why We Need Tim Cochrane” by Jonathan Judge, 10/2/13 [http://www.brooklynyr.com/2013/10/02/why-we-need-tim-cochrane/]). Jonathan J. Judge is the former President of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club (2008-2011) and current Chair of the Club’s Board of Directors.

The gist of what Jonathan Judge had to say in this post is that “... for the last 6 years, current party chair, Craig Eaton, and his cadre of sycophantic cronies have rendered the Republican brand in Brooklyn utterly meaningless. *** That is also reason numero uno why we need Tim Cochrane to become the next chair of the Brooklyn Republican Party. From State Senator Marty Golden to reform-minded Young Republicans like you and me, we believe Tim is the right one to make the Republican brand mean something again–beginning at the top.” Unfortunately, this wild pitch on behalf of the candidacy of Timothy Cochrane is more than a day late and more than a pound short.

On the other hand, maybe Glenn Nocero, the current President of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club and vocal supporter of Tim Cochrane, knew what he was doing by keeping Jonathan Judge and his endorsement of Cochrane under wraps until after the convention had been held and the votes counted. You see everybody knows that Jonathan Judge is a very atypical Republican; and he’s a very strange bedfellow of people like State Senator Martin Golden, Jerry Kassar and the rest of the "Republicans for Change" crowd.

This is the same Jonathan Judge, whose Republicanism was described as follows in a recent article about the competing Brooklyn Young Republican Clubs as follows: “He had no interest in the national party, which he called ‘the biggest monkey on our backs.’ Judge doesn’t believe social issues have a place in politics. He supports gay marriage and is pro-choice.” (See “Red in the Face – The bitter battle among Brooklyn’s Young Republican clubs” by Laura Entis, 7/4/13, bklynr.com [http://bklynr.com/red-in-the-face/]). That same article reported that “... Judge has stopped attending [Young Republican Club] meetings, and [Young Republican Club President Glenn] Nocera told me he’s struggled to get in touch with him. While he still serves as treasurer of the club, Judge claims he’s done with Brooklyn Republican politics. *** ‘Maybe as Republicans we missed the mark by trying to make politics in government our focus,’ [Judge] said.... What is clear is that Judge is tired of fighting to reform a political party he says he no longer believes in.”

So let’s get this straight — somebody thinks that it’s a good idea to publish a belated endorsement of Timothy Cochrane to be the next Republican Party Leader in Brooklyn by a man who no longer believes in the Republican Party and who says he is done with Brooklyn Republican politics. Just how is that supposed to work ?

If I had known Jonathan was supporting Cochrane, I would have given Eaton my proxy.

UPDATE: LITTLE BY LITTLE THE GOP CONVENTION STORY IS MAKING THE ROUNDS – THE BAY RIDGE JOURNAL'S "KIP" COVERED THE GOP CONVENTION AS A “...DEATHMATCH...” AND ALSO PART OF EATON’S AND GOLDEN’S “NASTY AND VERY PUBLIC DIVORCE”

The Bay Ridge Journal headline reads like this: “Proxy Deathmatch: Golden vs. Eaton” – what more needs to be said, right ? Well, I don’t have a lot to do right so let’s see what the Bay Ridge Journal has to say about this “Proxy Deathmatch...”.

This post largely tracks the Will Bredderman coverage of the 2013 Brooklyn GOP County Convention, that has been mentioned earlier here on the Brooklyn Independent GOP Fountainhead. There are few if any new and/or different tidbits in the Bay Ridge Journal post that indicate any independent research and/or investigation, although the tone seems more pro-Golden than the Bredderman article (See “Proxy Deathmatch: Golden vs. Eaton” posted by Kip, 10/2/13, Bay Ridge Journal Blog
[http://bayridgejournal.blogspot.com/2013/10/proxy-deathmatch-eaton-vs-golden_2.html]).

According to the BRJ report, “...Golden and his posse” were “... [p]acking 545 proxy votes” before the “the Eaton-appointed credentials committee knocked out 295 Golden proxies on the grounds that they'd been collected before the convention was scheduled. *** When Golden protested, credentials committee head Gene Berardelli shouted him down. *** When the Golden faction kept up the fight by repeatedly moving to count the proxies, GOP strategist Gerry O’Brien, as acting chair, denied the motions....”

In what is a presented as an interesting fact, the following observation was made, “Had it not been for the 420 proxies Eaton was packing, which trumped Golden's 270 remaining proxies, Cochrane would have beat Eaton by 66 to 20.” ( This is at most a factoid that is not relevant to any election outcome. It has no significance whatsoever; unless, of course, it is an item of evidence introduced to the IG of the BOE or the NYC DOI in an investigation as to why so many of the Martin Golden delegates that attended the GOP County convention were BOE employees, who were there on the day before a city-wide primary run-off.)

There is also a somewhat skewed discussion of the pre-convention attacks launched by the Eaton side; and the post ended with this, “Golden's and Eaton's nasty and very public divorce has been going on since this spring.”

its funny how you are going to loss in court. ha ha ha. Gene and Russ

Do we really want to make fun of Nocera? It's pretty easy to make fun of Bernardelli (because of his weight) and Russo (because he talks like he was part of Seal Team Six).

UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE "WHY WASN'T I TOLD ABOUT THIS BEFORE ?" EDITION

It seems that several in the Golden-Cochrane faction are quite bent out of shape that certain Marty Golden types, like Georgea Kontzamanis, were kept out of the GOP County Convention because she wasn't on the County Committee, but Bob Capano, along with an unidentified older gray-haired man, were allowed to have free reign inside the Republicans gathered at the Remsen Hall. Nonetheless, nobody on either side bothered to mention this tidbit --- until today !

It is being rumored that Capano and the the old gray-hair guy were there keeping an eye on the Catsimatidis investment in the Eaton-run convention. "How do you think they could afford all that printing and mail that they sent out the last week ? It was all Catsimatidis' money..."

I really don't know; and none of this was sourced "outside of the Golden camp." If anybody cares to confirm or deny or contradict any of this, please, do so.......

Anonymous said...

If any of that is true it seems that the County Bylaws allow for as many assistants as are necessary to give aid and assistance to said
Credentials Committee as are deemed necessary.

Galewyn Massey said...

Was Bob Capano one of those "...assistants as are necessary ...as are deemed necessary" ?

Just askin'...

Gladys Pemberton said...

Although they were not obliged to do so under the County rules, the chair ruled that it would accede to Ms. Rudiano's demands and have every vote counted. After a short delay, all valid votes were counted by Assembly District. Then all votes that were deemed invalid by the credentials committee were read into the record, name by name, and the reason they were declared invalid. At the end, all present knew that no votes were discarded and that every vote was counted.

It was interesting to note that anyone whose vote was for Craig Eaton, and who happened to work at the Board of Elections, was having their vote noted on her pad by Diane Rudiano. This was a legitimate vote and though the opposition may not have liked the outcome, it was a valid vote.

Of interest were the people who attended the meeting included numerous Board of Election employees who had been granted time off to attend the meeting even though the Run Off Election was scheduled to take place the following day. That's how the house was packed with Golden supporters. All to no avail. I
