State’s DAs offer up a balanced list of gun control proposals for New York State, as well as their New York State-centric recommendations for nation-wide gun control

According to Casey Seiler, blogging today in Capitol Confidential, New York State’s District Attorneys Association has gotten into the debate over new gun laws with lists of proposals that have been submitted to both state and federal lawmakers for their consideration (see Casey Seiler’s “State’s DAs offer up gun proposals for state, feds,” Capitol Confidential 1/8/13; [http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/175307/states-das-offer-up-gun-proposals /.../ ]

The DAASNY’s list includes many items that have been favored by Assembly Democrats, as well as several items, including stepped-up punishment for gun crimes and expansion of Kendra’s Law regarding oversight of the mentally ill, that have been floated by NYS Senate Republicans. Frankly, the list overall appears to be far more reality-based than some of the things that had been floated by the Governor and other New York State Democrats.

Among other things, a statement from DAASNY President and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr.,  says that, “... The [DAASNY] proposals seek to enhance the safety of New Yorkers by addressing a wide range of issues that contribute to senseless gun violence, including amending mental health laws, imposing stiffer penalties for crimes committed with firearms, banning high capacity magazines, restricting large quantity sales of firearms and ammunition, and closing the state and federal gun show loopholes. ***  Week after week, innocent victims are gunned down while trying to go about their daily lives....  We in government must do more for ordinary citizens, in New York and around the country. New York has long been a leader in sound gun control policy while respecting the Second Amendment. The proposals we support would strengthen our ability to protect New Yorkers against senseless gun violence by keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals and emotionally disturbed individuals.”

The complete list of the proposals from the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York will be provided in an “UPDATE” below as soon as it’s been copied and reformatted.

  1. If Cy Vance wants to do "more" he could start by having less press conferences and more work.

    1. Press conferences and other PR are a big part of the job of a DA.

That is especially true in the area of gun control. Look at how Brooklyn DA Hynes makes very a big deal about operations and programs that result in getting large amounts of guns off the street. Since, he also has been very cooperative with Brooklyn's only GOP State Senator on many other "law and order" issues, I expect that he will be very diligent in enforcing the Republican parts of any gun bill that comes out this election year.
