Whither Steve Saperstein ???

Thither !!!

If you don’t get that word play then you didn’t go to school with Steve Saperstein  ---  or me…..

Steve Saperstein is stuck in a “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern” rut.  Not to worry,  Tom Stoppard was briefly stuck in the same rut;  and he still emerged to become one of the great contemporary playwrights in the English language,  if not the greatest

How can Steve gain some traction; and maybe get his campaign down the runway and airborne ?????

Steve starts out with a great education.   And degrees, boy, does this lad have degrees !!!  And solid background, boy, does this lad have a solid background !!!!!

And his first foray into politics,  the City Council race against Chaim Deutsch  ---  not so great, but not shabby either  ---  maybe, some might even say,  “Pretty good”…..

SO WHY IS STEVE HAVING A PROBLEM GETTING TRACTION IN THIS  “WINNABLE” RACE FOR THE ASSEMBLY IN THE  46TH A.D.  ???

I think it’s all about Steve’s having to carry so much intra-GOP baggage that belongs to everybody hanging around him in this race  ---  and perversely, also the intra-GOP baggage of the Republicans that won’t lift a finger for him as the GOP standard-bearer in the 46th A.D. race.

The Democrats are still locked in a bitter fight to select their nominee against Steve in the 46th.   In spite of all that entails,  it is easy to predict that the Democrats eventually will be more united in the 46th A.D. than the Republicans going forward to the general election in November.

HERE’S SOME OF THE BAGGAGE

Let’s start with the Gerry O’Brien and Bob Capano things.   Even though, neither Gerry O’Brien nor Bob Capano are enrolled Republicans any longer,  their shadows still loom very large over the Brooklyn GOP.   I won’t get into all the   “he-said-she-said” rigamarole,  but there  are two fault lines there.  Minimally, those lines are routine trip hazards  ---  at worst,  either are threats to become sites for  “the big one”  in a tectonic sense.

I’ve spoken to both Gerry and Bob about Steve  ---  many times  (you can see how I had commented about Steve in 2017 and compare that to how I talk about him and his campaign lately  ---  draw your own conclusions).   Both do speak well of him personally, and both say that they have separated amicably and that there is no kind of animus in their relationship(s).   Then comes the  “but”…..   And in this instance I’d say it’s a lot closer to the “butt" in:   “It’s gotta be the butt, Bob”  (NB -- Bob Eubanks on the “Newlywed Game” -- not Bob Capano);   neither  Gerry nor Bob seem to like all the people who appear or claim to be “running” the Saperstein campaign in 2018;   and the former Republicans really don’t like a lot of HOW they are running it for Steve.   Enough said about all of that.

Almost certainly related to what I mentioned above is the big picture of the ongoing guerilla war between the Eaton and Golden factions in the Brooklyn GOP;   note:  the 46th A.D. is the epicenter of their still percolating conflict.  On one side are all the Republican activists that now want Marty Golden to lose his State Senate seat in order to break his headlock on the Brooklyn GOP;  and all the Republican and Conservative Party types that want to defend Marty at all costs, with no sacrifice too great.   Almost certainly, Steve Saperstein will be one of those costs or sacrifices  ---  without a doubt Jerry Kassar has a special stiletto with Steve Saperstein’s name on it  (just ask Lucretia…..).  Since primary night,  Marty has been so hungry for a deal,  that he has been slobbering all over Frank Seddio’s,  and Peter Abbate’s and Mark Treyger’s shoes  ---  and that doesn’t bode well for Steve.

Can anything be done to save Steve ?????

So, what can be done to save this fine young man, Steve Saperstein; and maybe even win this assembly seat ???   Well, frankly I don’t know,  but I am open to suggestions…..

  3. Liam may as well have run since he and the buffoon Ray Denaro are running Steve’s campaign. GM made some good points about some things working against Steve, but in some ways he’s been fortunate. Bob Capano has been restrained considering how close Steve is with the Upper East Side psychos couple. Between them and obnoxious Christine and Ray he better be careful that people who have so far been helping him don’t go against him because he insists on involving these losers.

  5. God bless you Steve Saperstein! By the way where.. Is John Quaglione? Why is he sitting the race out?

  6. Chairman Capano wins again. Goonrdes will bring a blue wave. Marty better get ready.

  7. If comment at 1:00 pm really is Ray Denaro—and it probably is—aside from that comment making sense to only him, it is more evidence that Steve has aligned himself with low IQ people to draw attention to his education credentials.

  8. Sap has the right people in the right places. The only way he loses this race is if the democrat gets more votes. But that wont always change the outcome.

  9. Yes it is odd that Capano has been silent on Saperstein race..I wonder what that means. Capano has been more involved with Gounardes

  12. What resources are going to be thrown wholesale into the Saperstein race? My guess is none; but, if any, it will be too little and too late. If any campaign actually gets cobbled together by Sap and his band of merry pranksters, it will be an all retail outreach operation to random voters, and darn little of that after all is said and done.

  13. Steve is a great guy.

The problem is not so much with who is running his campaign: it's a tough district for any Republican, especially in a year like this.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Gerry if you thought he was such a great you wouldn’t have signed on with another campaign early on. Just sayin...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I didn't say he was the only great candidate. And I've known others far longer.

Steve's entitled to hire anyone he likes for his campaign, just like I'm entitled to work for any candidate I choose.

The 46th A.D. is a very difficult district for any Republican in a year like this.

  16. Steve made a wise move not using Gerry this year . He learned from the disastrous campaign last year and now has many more republicans on his team in the trenches with him...smart move by Steve dumping Obrien

  17. Steve made a wise move not using Bob this year. He learned from the disastrous campaign last year and now has many more republicans on his team in the trenches with him...smart move by Steve dumping Capano.

  18. 46th has been trending Republican in the last few years. Steve is running against two very weak candidates with low name recognition. At this point it’s his race to lose and he’s making a go of it by continuing to staff his campaign with trash for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Is Sap still using "A Name You Can Trust" as his slogan?

    That made no damn sense.

  20. Neither do campaign events at Shake Shack in downtown Brooklyn.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Liam and his trailer park trash fiancé hurt Steve Saperstein in the early days I hope he can recover from the missfires because it don't matter Ethan or Matilda wins I think they can both be beat and maybe we can pick up a seat here because Steve is going to work hard at it

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shake Shack is something desperate clueless Steve would participate in. He’s that unseasoned of a candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The people I know say Denaro and Liam have totally removed themselves from that shitshow of a campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 7:54 the only way Liam and Ray would remove themselves from any campaign is if they were removed by the candidate. They are stage 5 clingers especially since no serious campaign will have anything to do with them.

  25. RESPONSE: THE "ONCE AN ASSHOLE -- TWICE AN ASSHOLE" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 6:25 PM" & "... AT 6:40 PM"

SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT I JUST DELETE COMMENTS THAT I HATE OR THAT I THINK ARE UNWORTHY --- THAT IS ONLY SOMETIMES TRUE --- OTHER TIMES I JUST HANG A LANTERN ON THEM

THEN THERE ARE SPECIAL TIMES LIKE THESE --- WHEN A COMMENT PRESENTS A "TEACHABLE MOMENT" --- AND IN THIS INSTANCE IT'S TWO VERY SIMILAR COMMENTS THAT ARE 100% WRONG --- MAKING THEM 200% WRONG --- MAKING THEM A DOUBLY TEACHABLE COUPLE OF MOMENTS

Here are the two comments from early Sunday evening that I both hated and thought to be unworthy.....

    First this:
    "Anonymous said... Steve made a wise move not using Gerry this year . He learned from the disastrous campaign last year and now has many more republicans on his team in the trenches with him...smart move by Steve dumping Obrien.... September 16, 2018 at 6:25 PM";

    and then this:
"Anonymous said... Steve made a wise move not using Bob this year. He learned from the disastrous campaign last year and now has many more republicans on his team in the trenches with him...smart move by Steve dumping Capano.... September 16, 2018 at 6:40 PM"

Here's the teachable moment (Steve Saperstein, I hope that you read and heed this) ---
"Steve ... now has many more republicans on his team in the trenches with him..." That kind of thinking and doing will not win anybody any election in any part of Brooklyn in the Twenty-first Century, least of all in the 46th A.D. in 2018.

Even during the 20th Century, people mostly went "into the trenches" to die or be carried out almost dead. --- That's why trench warfare was called "the meat grinder"; and large parts of Europe lost a large chunk of a generation of healthy young men that way.

In politics, "in the trenches" has a romantic cachet, but if it refers to most kinds of retail campaigning it is pretty worthless. Possibly, it can give a non-effective campaign the look of a campaign, but in reality it isn't of much value if you want a successful campaign, nor does it even play a very important role in successful campaigning.

If that much of the comments quoted above is false, any of the rest, perforce, is also likely to be false.

  32. RESPONSE: THE "ADDICTION TO FAILURE --- OR THE APPEAL OF TRENCH WAFARE" EDITION

TO ALMOST ALL OF THE PEOPLE COMMENTING ON THIS THREAD THIS MORNING

YOU KEEP MAKING THIS ABOUT PERSONALITIES..... DO NOT FORGET THE WELL-SAID EXPRESSION(S) ABOUT DOING THE SAME THING(S) OVER AND OVER, AND OVER AND OVER EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS --- IT/THEY IS/ARE MUCH MORE THAN (A) REPETITION(S) OF SOME "OLD SAW" OR PHONY FOLK WISDOM

MY COMMENT ABOVE WAS ABOUT THE BS CHEST THUMPING THAT SOME TEAM OF "REPUBLICANS" THAT IS "IN THE TRENCHES" WITH [A PARTICULAR REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE] BRINGS ANYTHING OF VALUE TO [THAT PARTICULAR CANDIDATE'S CAMPAIGN] --- MY COMMENT IS CLEAR THAT SUCH AN "IN THE TRENCHES" NOTION IS AS WORTHLESS AS HAVING ANYBODY IN TRENCHES; AND, BY IMPLICATION, THAT IF [ANY PARTICULAR CANDIDATE] FOLLOWS THAT PATH, THEY ARE BEING MISGUIDED AND THEY ARE LIKELY TO LOSE BADLY

A trench is a big and hazardous hole in the ground. Anything or anybody that encourages somebody to foolishly get down into one (with or without the company of other fools), when there are many other things to be done instead, is rashly risking a dire outcome without any upside to ANYBODY'S descent into the trench.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The sad part is Obrien and Capano could win this race for saperstein

    ReplyDelete
  34. 7:06 AM - Actually, if the otherside gets a "ringer" or a "leaner," "close" doesn't mean anything in horseshoes either.

On the other hand, with a tip-o'-m'-hat to Gaily-babe's arguments about "trenches" - "hand grenades" make getting "in the trenches" even more "hazardous", because there's no wiggle room in the trench.

  36. FLASH: THE "JUST NEXT DOOR TO SAPERSTEIN'S DISTRICT" EDITION

THE GOP'S MOST RECENT CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR, INCUMBENT REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLY MEMBER NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS (PLEASE TAKE SPECIAL NOTE OF HER LAST NAME) SEEMS TO HAVE HAD IT WITH MARTY GOLDEN'S LACK OF CONTROL OVER ROGUE STAFF MEMBERS --- THERE'S EVEN BEEN TALK FROM THE MALLIOTAKIS FOLKS THAT THERE WON'T BE ANY JOINT CAMPAIGNING WITH MARTY GOLDEN IN THE GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Andy wins his primary and suddenly Nicole flips out about Marko. Coincidence ??? I don't think so.....

BTW, aren't Gounardes and Malliotakis on the same ticket in a big bunch of Brooklyn EDs ????? I see something possibly in the works with the Reform Party here as well.....

  39. 7:35, read between the lines. This was an unwinnable race from the very beginning.

It's not Sap, Liam, or any other Republican. It's just a bad district and a bad year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can tell you that Marty and Nicole are a team have been a team and will be a team. Yes Marty Golden has Marko Kepi who hates loathes despises Malliotakis and the feeling is mutual. BUT Gounardes has Justin Brannan who is to a person loathed despised and hated by every single member of Team Nicole for his antics during last year’s Mayoral. Marty Golden should list Brannan as an in kind contributor. Not only is Malliotakis sticking with Marty but there is talk of people coming over from Staten Island to volunteer on Election Day.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Same district as last year and nicole won it by a mile. And my information tells me Trump was president last year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey 943, I can tell you that Marty and Nicole are not a team, they have never been a team and they will never be a team.

Yes, Marty Golden's Marko Kepi hates loathes and despises Nicole; and now their mutual antagonism is boiling over, because Marty lets ykw runs his shop like the asshole he is. If Marty wants Nicole, he needs to deep-six Kepi, for real.

And you know very well that Andrew Gounardes is not Justin Brannan no matter how much Marty Golden wants to pretend that Brannan and Gounardes are the same person. Besides, Brannan gets stronger every day and so does Gounardes; the only one around getting weaker each and every day is Marty Golden.

Even if Malliotakis is publically sticking with Marty Golden, it's like Craig Eaton and John Catsimatidis sticking with Mr. G; they are sticking like store brand band-aids on a sweaty afternoon.

But here's lol best line from 943. It's the one about there being talk of people coming over from Staten Island to volunteer on Election Day. Maybe some Democrats and others for Gounardes, but except for Marko Kepi, absolutely nobody will spring for tolls for Marty Golden, not even some of the people in his family.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Everybody is taking personal potshots at Justin, including the top gals for their guys, Christine and Colleen.

Liam and Marty need to man up and stop using their women as surrogates, or do these guys want to encourage some mud-wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 10:43 sure writes a lot about something they know little about. Everybody knows that Kepi and Malliotakis can't stand each other. That's one staffer on Marty's team and nothing new. You can say that Brannan and Gounardes are getting stronger every day but that does nothing to change the fact that Brannan went after Malliotakis in the Mayoral race and tried getting donors for her opponent this year, therefore whether or not he's stronger weaker makes no difference to Nicole people and they are sticking with Golden.

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1045am
Yes Nicole is sticking with Golden the same way Eaton and Catsimatidis are

    ReplyDelete

  54. Gonardes isn't the same as popular and well liked as Brannan but Gounardes has the Greek vote and that's a silver bullet. The Greeks will vote for Malliotaks and Gounardes easily

I DON'T KNOW THAT ANYBODY NAMED "NICK CHAMBERAS" HAS A DOG IN THIS FIGHT (BUT I CAN GUESS) --- WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT NICK CHAMBERAS WAS >>> NOT <<< MY SOURCE FOR THE SUBSTANCE OF MY COMMENT "FLASH: THE 'JUST NEXT DOOR TO SAPERSTEIN'S DISTRICT' EDITION... [ABOVE] AT 8:27 AM" --- BUT IT WAS FROM SOMEBODY CLOSE TO NICOLE M.....

I do know that Nick Chamberas knows plenty about how bad the the Marko Kepi-Nicole Malliotakis thing has become. However, if he thinks the problem can be easily solved, it shows that he is both presumptuous and foolhardy. I also think that it betrays his split loyalties, which all this stuff seem to be testing to its limits..... At least a few others have noticed it too; and they do talk (some possibly to me directly --- Uh Oh !!!).....

BTW, the lovely Nicole doesn't have to lift a finger to help Andrew G. in his quest to unseat Marty G. --- there are one or two people in a position to do that for her..... Enough about that, I don't want to burn any of my bridges, inside the Republican, Democrat, Conservative or Reform Parties.

As for the Greek Community, lots of people are having problems with this Golden-Gounardes rematch, some of them are long time surrogates for Marty G. in that ethnic and religious community, as well as its related professional and business organizations.

I don't know if this comment shows more about the Saperstein campaign, John Orlando, Gerry O'Brien, some guys named "Liam" and "Golden, "ten foot poles or the commenter's obvious animus when it comes to all things O'Brien.

  65. Gale, I have a follow-up about what you call "the Greek Community". Have you heard anything about State Senator Marty Golden not doing any heavy lifting to get this year's Greek Festival off the ground when his help was really needed?

    ReplyDelete
  66. The Greek Festival had a major permits problem due to their own paperwork mistake. No one from Golden’s Office was notified because the person in charge of the permits from Holy Cross is a good friend of Andrew Gounardes and Justin Brannan. Nonetheless I’m sure everyone is grateful that the issue was resolved.

    ReplyDelete

  74. Guys I know some of you want to sound like you’re in the “know” and project that you are “close” to Nicole but saying that she will have a great relationship with Andrew in Albany is silly. 85. UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE "YOU CAN'T MAKE UP BETTER STORIES ABOUT JOHN QUAGLIONE'S ANTICS THAN THE STUFF HE DOES HIMSELF" EDITION

THIS TIME QUAGLIONE COMPLETELY MISIDENTIFIED THE POINT THAT A GOUNARDES HAND HAD MADE ON SOCIAL MEDIA --- THAT MARTY GOLDEN AND HIS TEAM SEEMED TO BE CAMPAIGNING VERY EARLY IN THE 2018 ELECTION CYCLE

Here's John Q's idea of an effective rebuttal, along with an attempted put-down (after thinking about it and refining it for two days):
"John Quaglione @JQuaglione 20 minutes ago
    Replying to @johncapo
John- Are you new to the area because if you know anything about @SenMartyGolden it is that he is the fiercest of campaigners - so your assessment is beyond absurd. He did 18 block parties on Saturday. Move on pal...."

To me it looks like a 120% confirmation of what John Capo was saying in his original Tweet of 9/15/18:
    "John Capo @johncapo Sep 15
Corner of 75th and 3rd, two people holding up Golden signs in front of Starbucks. Golden campaigning 52 days out? Definitely something different in the air this time. #BK22SenateRace #BayRidge...."

To simplify it for ykw: the first John says that Marty Golden is doing some campaigning early this year; and the second John says that the first John must be new around here, because his boss has been campaigning feverishly for quite a while in 2018.

  86. I wonder how many votes Marty lost by crashing those eighteen block parties.

  89. UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE "COLLEEN GOLDEN SHOW" EDITION

I JUST HAD MY FIRST LOOK AT THE TWITTER SITE FOR "COLLEEN @COLLEENSGOLDEN" --- THAT SITE IS GOING TO BE A GOLD MINE FOR THIS BLOG; OR, SHOULD I REFER TO IT AS THE "GOLDEN MINE"

We appreciate brass-knuckle politics here at Galewyn Massey's "The Brooklyn Independent GOP Fountainhead"; so when I say that Colleen G. is a real "pitbull," it is meantto be complimentary. I've just looked into the last few days, and boy did Colleen ever sink her canine teeth into the shanks of Justin Brrrrrr, Julianne McShooosh, and -- please, tell me it ain't so -- my newly found Morning Star, Mallory nee McMahon...

This is important --- to my knowledge Colleen Golden is the only person to >>> acknowledge <<< that Fight Back Bay Ridge (FBBR) DID NOT threaten the Bohemian Rose Hair Studio.....

Colleen, all I can say right now is this: "Good luck with all that." --- 'Cause "... with a littuh bittuh luck you won't get nicked...." (Yes, my dear, you moved me to do a littuh bittuh Broadway Show music.....)

  91. Fight Back Bay Ridge are to the left of Obama and are vicious to anyone who disagrees with them. One of their members did ask for a boycott and it got likes and shares and fhen it was scrubbed after the backlash. These are the same people who mobilized to protest in favor of the crack hotel across the street from the elementary school. They brought over that militant socialist group from Manhattan. The way they were treating the protesters against the school tells you all you need to know about how crude and nasty these people are.

    To paraphrase a former President:

I hear you. And soon all of us will hear from Craig Eaton!

  93. Colleen Golden tried to be much more accommodating to Mallory McMahon, "FBBR" and Julianne McShane than someone on this blog wants you to know. She is a smart politician on her own, and in her own bailiwicks she knows what she has to do and why.
That's why Colleen didn't just, as you posted, 'acknowledge' that she was wrong about FBBR, she actually apologized to them for the over the top accusations, which she had made as part of the Golden team response to the FBBR activities at the 'Summer Strolls on Third' last month.
She has her own vested interests and dealings with Chip, Bob Howe and others concerning her pet projects, like The Ragamuffin Parade. That fall event on Third Avenue is very important to her, and she is trying to protect it from the same kinds distasteful street confrontations with FBBR and their hangers on that happened over the summer. SOme might even call it diplomacy.

  96. FBBR was planning a major disruption of the Ragamuffin Parade and Justin nearly soiled himself when he found out. From what I understand he made them call it off.

  97. Thank You again Justin. Now go back to finishing that third sandwich.

  98. Hey Justin if you dont finish lunch you'll be late for the early bird two'fers

  99. Just a word to the wise. I posted the comment about Colleen Golden that ended 'call it diplomacy', and newsflash, I am not this Justin, who looks like he is always on YOUR mind.
FYI, I did finish my lunch a little while ago, thank you very much.

  100. Have you ever been to the Ragamuffin Parade? How can you disrupt it? Who would ever notice?

Meeting and greeting isn't disrupting, nor is some parade participants passing out stuff to other parade participants.

Where do you think this is, Putin's Russia?
