HEADS UP ! Documentary --- "Slave One: The Kung Fu Judge Story" to be shown in February

The story of Judge John Phillips, whose legacy was shattered by corruption at the Brooklyn DA's Office AND at the Brooklyn courthouse is being told by a film-maker and the presenters at a Montana documentary film festival on February 18, 2018

See how corruption by insiders downtown and gentrification in the heart of Brooklyn’s African American community destroyed a man known and respected by many

One of the offerings at this year's Big Sky Documentary Film Festival will be Juan Leguizamon's  "Slave One: The Kung Fu Judge Story."

Long-time readers of this blog know that former DA Charles Hynes went after John Phillips,  a retired New York City Civil Court Judge, after Judge Phillips announced that he was running for DA against Hynes.

A small part of the onslaught against John Phillips is documented in "Slave One: The Kung Fu Judge Story"  (See "Slave One: The Kung Fu Judge Story -- Juan Leguizamon, 2017, USA — 18 minutes"  (w/ video link)  [http://www.bigskyfilmfest.org/festival/films-2018-peak/slave_one_the_kung_fu_judge_story]).

  1. Gail, why isn't this post about chairman Capano?
R U trying to freeze him out?
Gail, don't freeze out our chairman.

  2. Capano rescued Judge Phillips from a burning building, leaping from the approaching flames out the fourth floor window, the judge held tightly in his arms. The building was located on Staten Island, and Capano noticed the fire when he was walking past it to get to his home, just down the block.

  3. Post a link to the sale of his Staten Island "summer home" and we will believe he lives in Brooklyn. Maybe.

  4. RESPONSE: THE "GETTING SOMETHING RIGHT" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 10:44 AM"

THEY SAY THAT EVEN A STOPPED CLOCK IS RIGHT TWICE A DAY

Comment maker, "... at 10:44 AM," doubtless was poking jest at Bob Capano and the whimsically alleged Capano rescue of Judge Phillips from his burning "building... on Staten Island..."

There is a part of that which just happens to be true. Once during the skullduggery, and corrupt prosecution tactics and courthouse malefaction, all of which was aimed at Judge John Phillips during the last few years of his life, somebody set fire to Phillips' house in Brooklyn.

If that weren't bad enough, to add insult to injury, even while the house was still soaking wet from the dousing by the fire hoses and stinking of charred wet cinders, there were DA investigators there, not to investigate the arson, but to look through Judge Phillips' personal and financial papers for a possible case that Brooklyn's DA might have wanted to to have made against the old judge.

My prior "RESPONSE" and the two comments following it were republished. My "RESPONSE" was changed to correct a typo {and there was no change in the content or tenor of that comment.
The other two by the ubiquitous "ANONYMOUS" were essentially unchanged.

  9. Gale I've noticed several postings you did about Judge Phillips. A tragic story but why the interest? Did you try your first case before him?

  10. RESPONSE: THE "YOU'VE GOT ME MIXED-UP WITH SOMEBODY ELSE" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 7:39 PM"

GALEWYN MASSEY IS NOT AN ATTORNEY AND HE DOESN'T PLAY ONE ON TELEVISION --- I'M PRETTY SURE THAT I KNOW WHO MADE THE COMMENT IN QUESTION IMMEDIATELY ABOVE. IF I'M RIGHT, IT WAS A MUTUAL FRIEND OF OURS THAT TRIED HIS FIRST CASE IN FRONT ON JUDGE PHILLIPS

It has been an often told story --- just like the one about the pebble into the lake having caused a seeming infinity of ripples that still haven't played out.

  12. Judge Phillips was the chair of democrats for Guiliani.

  13. Gale, maybe it's you who is the stopped clock that's right twice a day, except I'm sure it's not even that often.

1st, the break in at Phillips house by the DAs men, including an ADA, was years before the fire.

2nd, when the fire happened Phillips was in a VA hospital under a court order by Judge Pesce. And when Phillips complained that he needed to be home to protect his property, the VA hospital administrator agreed that Phillips had a right to leave the VA facility, but Pesce then ordered Phillips taken to a private nursing home and put under lockdown with no visitors.

3rd, in an odd coincidence, the same night that Phillips house was torched, Sandra Roper's office, les than three blocks away, was firebombed. At the time, Ms. Roper had announced that she was a candidate to run for DA against Hynes again, and indicted by Hynes for something that was later settled as a civil matter. BTW, Sandra Roper is now a Civil Court Judge, a job that Judge Phillips has proven is much more dangerous than it looks.

  14. Coincidence? Slave One is the name of bounty hunter Bob Fett's ship in Star Wars.

  15. Wasn't Hynes briefly the New York City Fire Commissioner? And wasn't there a lot of arson around the city at that time too?

  16. Sounds like Mississippi Burning comes to Brooklyn.

  17. The final straw that brought Hynes down was his use of asset forfeiture money to pay for his political operatives. Checks went to Larry Morrish, Pam Harris and all of Marty Goldens pals.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hynes had his election night party at The Bay ridge Manor. Are we supposed to believe Hynes best friend Golden never got any of that money? Larry Morrish and Pam Harris were not exactly a player and they got checks

  19. Look at where Harris and Hynes are today.

  20. Golden seems to be doing just fine.

  21. Golden gave up Harris & Hynes.

  23. When Judge Phillips was arrested on a very strange gun charge, later dismissed, he tuned-up two NYC detectives pretty good. How come nothing much came out about that incident?

    ReplyDelete
  24. From what I heard those detectives were not told Judge Phillips was a black belt. The New York Times published a story in 1997 "Judge Arrested on Gun Charge". Judge Phillips complained the cops did not identify themselves but the NYPD Spokesman said the cops determined Phillips gun permit expiered 2 years earlier.

How did the cops know that?

  25. Everything with Hynes was a scam. Especially Howard Beach. The real killer who ran over the guy on belt parkway was a court officer who just kept going. The killer hid his car in Dennis Quirks garage for 2 weeks till Hynes was appointed the special prosecutor.

Doug Feiden at the daily news wrote all about it.

  26. Dennis "The Fat Man" Quirk seems to be in the middle of every cover up. Luthman, Judge Phillips, Howard Beach. And now Quirk is crowing about Trump making his daughter a Federal judge.
