There seems to be a growing debate about a "debate" at Xaverian HS by the 2017 Council Candidates for Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bath Beach

The Brooklyn Reporter debate at Xaverian H.S. is scheduled for August 15th  ---  THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT HOLY DAY IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

So far, some City Council candidates, at least one Catholic clergyman and some other interested folks seem to have weighed in on this, one way or the other

First, there were the arguments back and forth on Facebook ---  and then came some recriminations. [However, I've been able only to track down  a fraction of the stuff that was described to me as comprising the whole debate on this issue; so I can't fully report on all that's been said by all of the participants.....]

Nonetheless, based on what I have seen, our position here on this blog is simple  ---  this is a screw up  AND the date must be changed.

It's that simple.

  1. September 12 is both Chocolate Milkshake Day AND National Video Game Day.

I demand the Primary be rescheduled.

  2. The insult to Catholics by the religious bigot above, 4:39 AM, is disgusting and the operators of this blog need to make that clear.
Comparing 'Chocolate Milkshake Day AND National Video Game Day' with a major holy day celebrating a Papal doctrinal pronouncement about the unique status of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Catholic orthodoxy is uninformed, superficial and completely unacceptable.

  3. What kind of fool would bow his head to a Papal Dictator operating from a compound created by Mussolini?

  4. 7:43 thinks we have to respect all the wacky Catholic/Jewish/Muslim/Hindu/Mormon/Scientology beliefs.

We don't. Not one damn bit.

    Because this is still America.

Believe what you want. Just don't expect the rest of us to do so.

  5. 9:03 is 100% on the money. All religions have kooky ideas and beliefs. No religion, whether it's Catholicism or Mormon or whatever, should become an issue in an election. Look what that approach has done in places like the Middle East.

  6. A Catholic voter has an issue with one of the four Catholic candidates attending a debate sponsored by a Catholic High School. (sniff) Something smells.

  7. RESPONSE: THE "VIRULENT ANTI-CATHOLICISM" EDITION

TO MANY OF THE COMMENTERS ABOVE --- YOUR LATENT ANTI-CATHOLICISM AIN'T SO LATENT ANY MORE

FYI, AS FAR AS I KNOW, THREE OF THE FOUR REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSED RESERVATIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT HOLDING THE HOME REPORTER DEBATE AT XAVERIAN HIGH SCHOOL ON THE EVENING OF AUGUST 15TH, BECAUSE IT WAS ONE OF THE SPECIALLY REGARDED CHURCH HOLIDAYS, BOTH IN DIOCESES IN THE UNITED STATES AND AROUND THE WORLD --- IT IS VERY INTERESTING TO THOSE OF US ON THIS BLOG THAT >>> NOT ONE OF THEM <<< SPOKE OUT AGAINST PEOPLE SAYING THAT THEIR SACRED DAY WAS "...KOOKY..."; OR ABOUT "...WHACKY CATHOLIC... BELIEFS..." THAT "... WE DON'T [RESPECT]. NOT ONE DAMN BIT..."; AND REFERENCES TO THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF ALL REAL CATHOLICS, THE POPE, AS "...A PAPAL DICTATOR OPERATING FROM A COMPOUND CREATED BY MUSSOLINI..."

This comments thread clearly shows --- up to this moment that those three candidates have not exhibited their courageous profiles to the readers of this blog in any way, shape or form.

I am especially put out by the position expressed to me by one of those characters in particular..... I sort of feel like I was sand-bagged; especially in light of the very big favor that was done for >>> them <<< by me a short while ago in this campaign.....

  8. I was so looking forward to it.

  9. There is still a phone booth on 72nd & 3rd.

    Have the debate there

  10. Jeez Louise !!

Some of these comments sound like a Klan meeting. Very anti catholic.Papal dictator !! I smell a cross burning.

  11. Gailykins, we know that Liam and John have said that they were concerned about the debate being held on the religious holiday, but who was the third candidate?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I understand 6:35 confusion.

Capano was known as the third candidate until Lucretia got into the race. Now capano is the 4th candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wasn't a former Councilman a Druid? Do you think he had these same scheduling conflicts?

    ReplyDelete
  14. 724 AM i REALLY THOUGH cAPANO WAS IRRELVANT BUT PEOPLE KEEP BRINGING HIM UP HERE..GUESS HAVE TO TAKE ANOTHE RLOOK AT HIM AS PEOPLE TAKING HIM SERIOUSLY HERE

    ReplyDelete
  15. So Capano worships Zeus? Is that what the takeaway here is?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not Zues, Doctor Seuss.

  17. Did anyone see that Liam did an OTB for Working Family Parties line..this cant make conservatives happy. .a republican aligned with the Working Families Party...not good in a Republican primary. Quaglione victory just got easier once press gets this news

    ReplyDelete
  18. Liam did an OTB to create a write-in primary for the Working Families Party to disrupt the Democrats and distract them. I don't think Liam has any plans to ask people to write his name in. It's brilliant. One Dem on the Democrat line, a different Dem on the WFP line.

    ReplyDelete
  19. How dumb are the Quaglione people on here?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey 1145 if true that plan totally back fires if el yateem wins dem primary and then el yateem wins working families party OTB thanks to Liam..

Liam once again shows why Quaglione and his consultants are the only adults playing in this Rep primary. .

Never mind one mailing to prime Republicans with the story today of McCabe initiating OTB for Working Families Party does him in..mccabe can spin it all he wants but all mailer will say is the factual truth -- liam got working family party petitions to open the line..irrelevant if hes campaigning for it

    ReplyDelete
  21. Capano only has 2 college interns working for him and McCabe has some person whose been doing the same exact mailings for 30 years..

    ReplyDelete
  22. This wild Working Families antics is precisely why Liam cannot be trusted and why voters will fill in the oval for a man they can trust, a man named John Quaglione. If I were part of Quaglione's kitchen cabinet, I would be prepping a big mailer to all the Republicans to make them aware that Liam wants to run as a progressive Democrat. McCabe is McToast.

  23. WAIT, DID ANYONE SEE THIS ?

"Republican infiltrates left-wing party's primary" by Will Bredderman

The Working Families Party confirmed that a Republican candidate used the obscure "opportunity to ballot" tactic to create an unexpected primary for the left-leaning party's in southern Brooklyn's 43rd City Council district.

The WFP had endorsed Democrat Justin Brannan and expected to award him Row E on the November ballot. But GOP candidate Liam McCabe collected petition signatures from some three dozen registered members of the party and submitted them to the Board of Elections. As a result, the few hundred WFP voters in the district will be able to write in whatever candidate they want in a September primary, creating a free-for-all—and forcing Brannan, considered the frontrunner for the seat, to divert resources to holding onto the party's ballot line.

Several sources suggested that McCabe might have cut a deal and pursued the Working Families line to boost the chances of Brannan's left-wing Democratic primary rival, the Rev. Khader El-Yateem.

  24. BACKFILL: THE "LET'S STAY ON THE TOPIC, FOLKS" EDITION

YOU ARE ALL WORSE THAN A BUNCH OF CATS TRYING THE CATCH THE FLASHLIGHT SPOT BEING RAPIDLY MOVED AROUND A FLOOR

THE SUBJECT OF THE POST ABOVE AND THE EARLIER COMMENTS ON THIS THREAD WERE ABOUT THE PROPRIETY OF A SECULAR BUNCH OF PEOPLE LIKE THE HOME REPORTER THROWING A PRE-PRIMARY DEBATE AT A CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ON A CATHOLIC HOLY DAY

FATHER GELFANT CALLS OUT CURRENT CROP OF CANDIDATES TO OPPOSE HOLDING THE DEBATE ON AUGUST 15TH

With a little assist from one of the GOP candidates for City Council in the 43rd Council District, I found that the issue of holding a debate on the Catholic holy day on August 15th was raised in a Tweet by the Pastor of Saint Finbar Catholic Church, "The Mother Church of Bensonhurst/Bath Beach" --- Father Michael Louis Gelfant (See "Do not debate on a Holy Day!" by Fr. Michael Gelfant, 7/29/17, Twitter [https://twitter.com/frgelfant/status/891318761919315969]).

We have had our disagreements with Father G in the past --- on a long ago blog, and it was about Father G's taking sides in a local political argument; however in this instance, we completely agree with him and the many folks that supported his position on social media....

  25. UPDATE: THE "HOT OFF THE PRESSES" EDITION

IN SPITE OF SOME POSTURING BY ONE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE, JOHN QUAGLIONE --- TO THE EFFECT THAT HE HAD SPECIAL CONNECTIONS TO CERTAIN CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS AND WOULD LOOK INTO THE FLAP CAUSED BY THE SCHEDULING OF A DEBATE ON A SACRED CATHOLIC FEAST DAY --- THE EVENT APPEARS TO BE GOING FORWARD UNRUFFLED AND APPARENTLY UNCARING OF THE MORE DEVOUT CATHOLIC SENSIBILITIES

LESS THAN A HALF HOUR AGO, I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM "THE QUEENS COURIER" --- WITH BANNERS OF THE "HOME REPORTER" - "BROOKLYN REPORTER" - AND - "THE BROOKLYN SPECTATOR NEWS" --- INFORMING ME AND "ALL RESIDENTS OF BAY RIDGE - DYKER HEIGHTS - BENSONHURST - BATH BEACH" THAT THE "DISTRICT 43 - CITY COUNCIL DEBATE" WAS BEING HELD "TUESDAY AUGUST 15TH, 6:30 PM TO 9 PM" AND THAT THE "EVENT HOST" WOULD BE "XAVERIAN HIGH SCHOOL - 7100 SHORE ROAD, BAY RIDGE"

The Courier Life E-mail display item also indicated that "...sponsorships..." were available, but that there would be limited space available.

There was also a link to "RSVP": Brooklynreporter.com/Debate; and the "For Information" line was as follows: "call Christine 718 238 6600 ext. 123 - clatorre@brooklynreporter.com" with an active link space [to a "Brooklyn Reporter" site with a similar announcement display with spaces for your personal details].

WELL, SO MUCH FOR STRONGLY HELD CATHOLIC SENSIBILITIES, I GUESS ! ! !

  26. If a Catholic school is holding a debate with mostly Catholic candidates, how is the event anti-Catholic, regardless of the date?

  33. Maybe he does own a charm school 2:11, but his supporters never attended.

  34. The Liam stuff has completely overwhelmed the non fresh faces. I understand capanos upset that scanners at the check out line might render him unemployable and Quagliones lawn signs will not sway many. Lucretia may have something going somewhere but nobody has seen it yet.

Q is only adult in race

    ReplyDelete
  36. Are you serious when you say, 'Q is only adult in race'?
It is obvious Q took the 'short bus' to school every day. Because he was 'simple,' he needed a 'simple' job after finishing a series of 'private' schools. Since the Q family was was very friendly with Marty Golden, they made an arrangement for young JQ to get a 'good job' suitable for Q's very 'simple' abilities. And then JQ worked in the same 'simple' position at Marty Golden's office as his one and only job as an 'adult'.
'Only adult in the race'! JQ shouldn't even be allowed to vote, much less be elected to anything.
Don't you agree that JQ needs to be 'tested' to see what makes him so 'simple'; or was that testing done years ago?

    ReplyDelete
  37. When sept 12 comes and goes and Q gets 50 percent of vote this argument will be settled

    ReplyDelete
  38. Q got 32% of vote last time he ran

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey 9:42 get your facts together. Q got 34% it was Capano that got 32%

  42. UPDATE & A LITTLE BACKFILL: THE "...AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT" EDITION

BOY DID LIAM SHOW HIS OLD CONSERVATIVE PARTY STRIPES WHEN HE TRIED TO BRING THE HAMMER DOWN ON ONE OF HIS GOP ADVERSARIES A SHORT WHILE AGO --- AND WHY --- FOR PRESSING CHALLENGES AGAINST A GUY NAMED "BRUNO"

LIAM GOT ALL PISSY AND WHINY WHEN SOMEBODY SUGGESTED THAT A CASE AGAINST THE GUY RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL ON THE INDEPENDENCE LINE WAS A SLAM DUNK IN COURT, BECAUSE COMMISSIONER SIMON SHAMOUN, MARTY GOLDEN'S COMMISSIONER ON THE BOARD, FORCED THE REST OF THE BOARD TO PUT THE INDEPENDENCE PARTY CANDIDATE BACK ON THE BALLOT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS CLEAR FROM THE ELECTION BOARD'S COUNTERS THAT THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH VALID SIGNATURES FOR ANYBODY TO HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THAT LINE

The news is that Liam had one of his now all-to-common melt-downs in front of ykw, and during his carrying on, Liam spilled the beans about a bunch of deals, all supposedly hatched by Ted Ghorra..... At least, that's what Liam said.....

The most interesting thing is that the only person clearly holding the bag in all of this is Liam McCabe, a candidate for the very same office for which all the deals were supposedly made. Even though the deals were supposed to involve all the GOP candidates, except one, and the guy named "Bruno"; the only one doing the heavy lifting was Liam and his crew.

You see Liam's pitch was that "Bruno" had to stay on a couple of the "third party' lines as a place-holder, because all the GOP candidates had agreed to that. However, it was Liam's folks that actually produced things like the ten affidavits that were supposedly the thing that got "Bruno" over in the case at the Board.

So keep your eyes peeled for this --- If anybody tries any substitution for "Bruno" on a couple of lines after the GOP primary, look for the Democrats to try to reopen the case for candidate fraud --- and let's see if they call Liam as a witness, he has quite a tale to tell, even if it's all made up.

  45. RESPONSE: THE "NOT SO FAST, WHITE MAN" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 5:30 AM"

THE FILING OF THE SUBSTITUTION COULD BE INVALIDATED --- THE FACIAL VALIDITY OF THE PETITIONS WOULD NOT BE THE ISSUE, THE FILING OF A SUBSTITUTION WOULD BE A SEPARATE "ACT" AT THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS --- AND THE ISSUE OF FRAUD COULD BE RAISED VIS A VIS THE FILING OF THE "SUBSTITUTION(S)" AS (A) SCAM(S) OR (A) FRAUD(S) ON THE BOARD AND THE PUBLIC

THE DEAL(S) TALKED ABOUT BY LIAM INVOLVED >>> JOHN BRUNO'S SHIFTING HIS PLACE AS THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY CANDIDATE FOR CITY COUNCIL IN THE 43RD DISTRICT TO A JUDGE SPOT ON THE BALLOT FOLLOWING THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY'S POST-PRIMARY JUDICIAL SELECTIONS <<< IF AS LIAM'S STATEMENTS INDICATE, THAT WAS THE "DEAL" ALL ALONG, IT BESPEAKS A FRAUDULENT SCHEME FROM THE GET GO & LOTS OF PROBLEMS FOR LOTS OF PEOPLE

    'Nough said, for now ! ! !

    ReplyDelete
  46. John Bruno is gonna get 11%

    Who cares?

  47. RESPONSE: THE "INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE" EDITION

TO: ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 8:27 AM

HOW CAN YOU STILL NOT GET THIS ??? JOHN BRUNO WILL GET SOME LOW PERCENTAGE AS A THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE FOR >>> SUPREME COURT JUSTICE <<<

UNLESS HE ALSO GETS THE GOP LINE --- THEN HE MIGHT GET A SLIGHTLY HIGHER LOW PERCENTAGE

But, as things stand right now, good old Mr. B. is the centerpiece of a fraudulent conspiracy to circumvent the timetables and procedures of the NYS Election Law.....

    ReplyDelete
  48. I hear that people are already talking about going to the Feds to have them investigate the Brooklyn GOP, Brooklyn Conse Party, their chairs and Bruno. Obviously the parties only put Bruno on the line to raise MONEY and place hold..they never ever had any intentions of leaving him there since it would hurt Q or Liam.

Reeks of fraud to me. Hope the US Atty agrees.

Ghorra has a law license to protect. Could get REALLYYY interesting friends.

And you know when push comes to shove, they will all squeel like rats against each other and Ghorra is the newest guy so he will take the fall.

BUT IT'S TIME TO GET BACK ONTO THE SUBJECT

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 11:52 PM" --- AND A RAFT OF OTHER COMMENTERS ON THIS THREAD ABOUT THE DEBATE SCHEDULED ON THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY, BODY AND SOUL, INTO HEAVEN

A birdie told me that the Brooklyn Reporter folks have pretty much stone-walled Father Gelfant and any of the prickly Catholic naysayers concerning the Home Reporter's schedule August 15th debate among the councilmatic candidates, schedule at 6:30 PM at Xaverian High School.

Well, that is deeply disappointing to me as a prickly Randian-agnostic naysayer to many things religious --- especially when it come to the sphere of the common secular polity..... However, even the most died in the wool libertarian can see the need for an occasional accommodation to deeply held religious sensibilities --- especially when, like in this instance, that accommodation can be easily attained and put into place, post haste.

After all isn't that one of the latter day hallmarks of "E pluribus unum" --- now, that diversity is the jewel in Lady Liberty's diadem prized above so many others.....

    ReplyDelete
  57. Father Gelfant has no problem demanding leniency for convicted members of La Cosa Nstra.

Whoops, I forget: La Cosa Nostra don't exist. It's a slur against the good name of St. Joseph Columbo and his apostles at the Wimpy Boys club.

Gelfant should watch himself. The Pope is sacking his friends in the Order of Malta left and right. Pray he doesn't make himself the next in line by being a jackass.
