Cuomo and de Blasio seem happy with their Nanny Tyranny after “Better safe than Sorry” Shutdown of New York

Something “...outside was frightful...”  —   But it wasn’t “The weather...”

—   And it all could be the “New Normal”

BUT   Even de Blasio wants answers about Cuomo’s unilateral subway shutdown

Here’s an AP item that sort of tells a story that sound’s just a little worrisome:

“NEW YORK — They appeared to be scenes from a frozen apocalypse. ***   Streets across the nation's largest city were empty, the only movement the changing traffic lights signaling to cars that weren't there. The subway system was shuttered, the city's pulse rendered still. Hardy souls who braved the snow were threatened with fines or arrest. ***  And it could be the new normal.  ***   Though the snowstorm largely missed New York City, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio staunchly defended their unprecedented, stringent restrictions, both saying they believed in landing on the side of caution and suggesting they would take such measures again....” ( See “Cuomo, de Blasio, defend strict NYC storm regulations” by Jonathan Lemire, 1/28/15, Deseret News/ Associated Press [http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765667266/Cuomo-de-Blasio-defend-strict-NYC-storm-regulations.html]).

IS THIS THE “NEW NORMAL” ?  —   THREATS OF ARRESTS !

Jonathan Lemire’s article goes on to state, “Before the heavy snows even reached New York, officials closed schools, shut down bridges and tunnels, canceled commuter rail service and, for the first time ever in a snowstorm, closed the city's sprawling subway system at 11 p.m. Monday. A travel ban was put in place and drivers caught out on the roads were subject to arrest.” And then the author of the piece said this: “Similar restrictions, previously unheard of, were put in place for a pair of hurricanes within the last five years.”

CUOMO AFRAID OF A REPEAT OF HIS OWN RECENT FAILURE TO ACT

The Lemire report on the AP also commented  about the Governor’s response to the storm, as follows:  “Cuomo acknowledged that his decision to act aggressively stems from the historic storm that blanketed Buffalo with seven feet of snow late last year. ***   ‘We make big decisions based on these weather forecasts,’ the governor said. ‘We decided not to close the roads in Buffalo ... and we had people stranded on the roads for 12, 15, 20 hours. You can have a significant loss of life in these situations.’..."

A SPLIT BETWEEN THE MAYOR AND GOVERNOR ?   —   MAYOR WANTS ANSWERS ABOUT THE GOVERNOR’S UNILATERAL SUBWAY SHUTDOWN

Even though de Blasio and Cuomo similarly defended their actions in response to the oncoming sstorm, their presentations looked like anything but a united front.

Cuomo and de Blasio never appeared at a joint press conference.  On Monday night was the somewhat absurd circumstance of these two men, just five miles apart, delivering very similar information in separate press conferences with less than an hour separating the two speeches.

Then, on Tuesday morning, New York City Mayor de Blasio revealed that his administration only received word that the subways, which aren’t under the mayor’s control, were being shut down mere minutes before Cuomo made the public announcement. De Blasio said that he would not second-guess the Governor’s decision  —  but the Mayor made clear he wanted to study the repercussions of the Governor’s order to shut down the city’s subways.

  3. Were the R, F and B trains running on time and orderly this morning so that Brooklyn residents could get to work and school safely and on time? The answer is YES. So go send a thank you note to your liberal Mayor for ensuring your safety and timely transport to your job.

I suspect that Russell Gallo’s article on the “Behind Enemy Lines- Blogging from Within” site is getting plenty of play since he put it up there ( See “NYC's Non-Blizzard and Why Liberal Idiots Promulgate Weather Hysteria” by Russell Gallo, 1/27/15, Behind Enemy Lines... I read it — It’s pure RG; and it pushes all of the right buttons when it comes to the most recent government generated crisis.

I hope that RG follows through and nominates both Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio to serve jointly as this week’s BOTW for their “Cuomo-de Blasio, because of the worst ever snowstorm in all of recorded history for 2015, s-o-s citizens’ house arrest and merit badge moment.”

And for “Dry Goods” Gene Berardelli, I hope you SELL a lot of T-shirts.

TO: COMMENT MAKER "ANONYMOUS... 11:49 AM..." ABOVE

"[O]ur liberal Mayor..." had nothing to do with service on those subway lines or any other subways. According to de Blasio, he didn't order the shutdown; and he only found out that the shutdown would be happening at the last minute.

btw, I don't think that he has yet thanked our liberal governor for what he did.

  9. The Daily News has Kaiser Warren Wilhelm de Blasio saying this – “Get off the roads, get off the streets, get off the sidewalks,” de Blasio said during a press conference on blizzard moving to shut down New York City and much of the Northeast. He said people will be subject to summons or arrest if they are out on the street past 11 p.m.

That’s like putting everybody under house arrest, isn’t it?

  10. The last I recall when we had a snow storm under a Republican Mayor he was on a Caribean island somewhere drinking Pina Coladas and when he did return gave a press conference storm update and proceeded to tell New Yorkers to go see a Broadway play. The entire city was shut down due to this Republican Mayor's inefficiency. So please stop your whining (I thought only the Republican clowns in D.C. do that anyway)and take comfort in the reality that we finally have a mayor who is "of the people" and actually cares about his constituency. The subway system is under the control of the governor so technically it was his call - an excellent one. Go tell Gomer and the rest of Hogan's Heroes to appreciate what they have in our city's leadership for a change and stop complaining.

  11. Gomer wasn't a POW in Hogan's Heroes, he was Jarhead Gyrene in Camp Pendleton.

  12. With the amount of salt dumped on the streets for no reason we will be feeling the impact for months of the snow job with pot holes and streets that have turned into gravel.

  13. RESPONSE TO SOME OF THE ABOVE: THE "MAYOR KNOWS BETTER THAN YOU WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU" EDITION

"GET OFF THE ROADS - GET OFF THE STREETS - GET OFF THE SIDEWALKS..."
    - DE BLASIO

AND DON'T FORGET "BENITO" CUOMO'S SHUTDOWN OF ALL THE RAILROADS, SUBWAYS AND BUSES

All of that was for what turned out to be a "routine" heavy snowfall that had been predicted by several models.

After the fact, "Anonymous... 1:32 PM...", who is some kind of knee-jerk liberal-supporting wacko, wants to compare the recent heavy-handed response to under ten (10) inches of snow to a past under-reaction by another Nanny-state mayor to a prior storm that was more than twice as bad.

The issue is that there can be NO JUSTIFICATION for the local restriction of liberty that was based on little more than rumors by "experts," and the egomaniacal arrogance and tyrannical over-reaction of local leaders.
