“Let’s Go Joe ! Let’s Go Joe ! Let’s Go Joe !” filled the fall air as “Joe” Hynes kicked off his Republican-Conservative Campaign for DA from the steps of Brooklyn’s Borough Hall

In giving his reasons to run as a Republican and Conservative, DA Charles Hynes repeatedly charged Democratic Nominee Ken Thompson with lying about convicted felon Clarence Norman’s participation in Thompson's Democratic Primary Campaign

Republican State Chairman Ed Cox, Kings County Conservative Chairman Jerry Kassar and State Senator Martin Golden (Rep-Cons) in attendance  —  Kings Republican Chairman Eaton was acknowledged by Hynes

The kickoff of the Hynes Campaign reset to a full-scale run on the GOP and CONSP lines went off enthusiastically late Tuesday morning at Borough Hall in Brooklyn. A large and diverse crowd was arrayed behind the incumbent Brooklyn DA, who explained why he had reconsidered his decision to step aside after his Democratic Primary loss to the Democratic nominee Kenneth Thompson.

According to DA Hynes he was running as a Democrat on the Republican and Conservative lines for three main reasons. First, even though he’d lost the Democratic Party Primary, 82% of Democrats had not expressed their choice for DA. In fact, according to Hynes, his opponent Ken Thompson only received the votes of a little over 9% of registered Democrats; and in a democracy like ours, such a vote is not enough to deprive the remaining voters their choice on election day. Second, since his post-primary announcements conceding and agreeing to help Ken Thompson’s team to transition into the DA’s office, Hynes said that multiple sources had informed him that Clarence Norman had run Ken Thompson’s election day operation; and that fact had been confirmed by several media reports. Even worse, Thompson had compounded the error of choosing Clarence Norman, a convicted felon, to be in charge of  the Thompson get out the vote operation by lying about it when he had been asked about it. Third, and lastly, it was only about a week ago that Hynes became convinced that there would be enough money raised to run a first rate campaign going toward election day.

Shown on several stills and repeatedly appearing on the Hynes campaign video, State Senator Marty Golden was the most prominent Republican and elected official among those gathered to support Brooklyn’s incumbent district attorney. Even though Ed Cox and Jerry Kassar were mentioned by the candidate as being in the crowd, they weren’t readily apparent on the video posted by the campaign or the stills appearing on the news blogs. There was no mention as to why somebody as prominent as Mike Long was neither present nor acknowledged.

Several reports indicated that there was a significant amount of heckling and that Hynes’ speech was interrupted several times, but a complete review of the Hynes campaign video does not indicate that level of hostility or disruption from the crowd. The coverage in the NY Times was along these lines: “Charles J. Hynes, the Brooklyn district attorney, officially kicked off his reinvigorated bid for a seventh term on Tuesday morning amid questions about the viability of his campaign, which he is running as the Republican and Conservative nominee after losing the Democratic nomination last month. ***  Mr. Hynes’s rally, on the steps of the Brooklyn Borough Hall, was met by competing chants of “Let’s go Joe” and “Hynes must go,” creating the latest skirmish in a rematch that has already far surpassed the initial primary contest in bitterness and vitriol. Protesters carried signs that read, “Hynes lies again!” and “Hynes, your time is up,” trying to shout Mr. Hynes down as he denounced his Democratic opponent, Kenneth P. Thompson, as unqualified and dishonest....” (See “Hynes Is Met by Hecklers as He Renews Bid for Brooklyn District Attorney” by Vivian Yee, 10/8/13, NY Times [http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/09/nyregion/hynes-is-met-by-hecklers-as-he-renews-bid-for-brooklyn-district-attorney.html?_r=0]).

Similar reports about the level of heckling appeared in the Daily News, the Home Reporter, the NY Observer’s Politicker Blog and other media outlets (See “Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes heckled as he announces re-election bid as a Republican and Conservative ” by Reuven Blau, 10/8/13, NY Daily News [http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/hynes-heckled-announces-election-bid-article-1.1479502];  “D.A. 1. I keep seeing the number of democrats who voted in primary go from 22% to 18% to 12% and now its 9%.

What difference does it make? The turnout in the election will be low as it was in the primary. The voters who do show have spoken loud and clear. They want Hynes out. End of story.

  2. I keep hearing the Hynes strategy is based on a low turnout.
So thats the thinking? Nobody will vote?
Or is it that nobody will vote for him.

  3. The Republican & Conservative party look like they convinced Hynes to do it to help Lhoto and Quaglione. Hynes looks so feeble hes probably going to be the last to know.

  5. UPDATE AND BACKFILL: WHAT'S WITH THE NEW YORK POST'S COVERAGE OF THE HYNES CAMPAIGN ?

    FIRST, THE LORD GIVETH --

Yesterday, the NY Post gave the Hynes GOP Campaign kickoff generally favorable coverage. (See "Hynes officially kicks off Republican campaign for DA" by Josh Saul, 10/8/13, NY Post/Metro [http://nypost.com/2013/10/08/hynes-officially-kicks-off-republican-campaign-for-da/]). The NY Post article focused on a key issue that was mentioned in my article above, as follows: "Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes announcing Tuesday he would seek reelection on the Republican line — fired up after learning his opponent’s Democratic Primary victory was aided by a crooked ex-assemblyman and party boss who he’d once sent to prison...."

THEN, THE GOOD LORD TAKETH AWAY

Less than a day later, the Post seemed to sort of reverse course, or at least reverse an "OPINION" that it had about Hynes' Republican Campaign (See "Will Hynes help the GOP grow?" by Seth Lipsky, 10/9/13, NY Post Opinion [http://nypost.com/2013/10/09/will-hynes-help-the-gop-grow/]). The whole piece seemed to be tinged with irony culminating in these passages:
"...Hynes took the leap into the arms of the Republicans. *** It’s not so clear, though, that Hynes is making a strategic shift. He noted the “diverse outpouring” of support he’d received as a candidate and declared, “This is not about party politics, it’s not about labels, it’s about public safety.” *** That kind of talk sounds good, and Hynes certainly deserves his share of the credit for the drop in crime in Brooklyn during his years in office. But if the idea is to institutionalize this progress for years to come, the first job will need to be building a party in which not just people but principles endure. *** It’s not a good sign for the GOP that Herman Badillo [another Democrat that ran as a Republican] eventually went back to the Democrats."

  6. UPDATE: THE "...AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT..." EDITION

HARD HITTING SATIRE FROM FRUM FOLLIES – SOME UNRESTRAINED ORTHODOX JEWS HIT REPUBLICAN-CONSERVATIVE DA CANDIDATE HYNES RIGHT IN THE BALLS – AS A GOP-GOY OBSERVER, THIS IS WAY MORE THAN “ONE STEP OVER THE LINE, SWEET JESUS !”

Only a bunch of crazy Orthodox Jews, who also happen to hate the GOP and Conservative Party Candidate for Brooklyn DA would dare to try to pull this off... Charles “Joe” Hynes as Adolf Hitler in his bunker.... Brrrrr, scary stuff with everybody in their Wehrmacht and other German costumes and dialogue in the original German ( actually from a Hitler bio-pic with Hynes oriented subtitles)
( See “The Downfall of Joe Hynes- Parody Video Announcement” by Yerachmiel Lopin, 10/11/13, Frum Follies [http://frumfollies.wordpress.com/2013/10/11/the-downfall-of-joe-hynes-parody-video-announcement/ ]; with link to “The Downfall of Joe Hynes” ). Here is a sample of some of the brief text that accompanies the link: “Malach Hamovies – Angel of Death Productions extends its thanks to the People of Brooklyn for putting up with Joe all these years. We also thank Breezy Point, Queens for housing Joe without expecting him to acknowledge you as his residence.” There’s more, but I’d need a few more Powers-doubles neat before I’d even think of repeating it.
