Go to Fourth Avenue between Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth Streets --- Get on the east side of the avenue and look across at the great tapestry brick behemoth that is OLA --- Church, Rectory and School..... "Upon this rock I will build my church.... And the gates of hell will not prevail against it...."
--- NOT SO FAST !!! ---
Now think of all the Catholic Schools and Rectories and Churches in all of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn --- and picture them all gone --- that's what the former NYS Conservative Party Chairman, Mike Long, sees coming.....
Admittedly, Long's quote in "The Tablet" was intended to be limited to >>> the schools <<< --- but his vision could not rationally be limited to only that
Also admittedly, Long's quote was an attempt >>> to put lipstick on a pig <<<
What's happening to the schools is certainly going to happen to the churches and rectories and convents and friaries and parish halls, and anything else worth a buck --- This is probably not what Godfather Bishop Nicky Mars wants everybody thinking about, but it's obvious that the Catholic Church is "Getting out of Dodge" in all of Southwest Brooklyn --- and closing [merging] the former parish schools is just the start.
Don't forget that the very same Godfather Bishop Nicky Mars announced several years ago his plan to reorganize Catholic Education in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens called "Preserving the Vision.” At the time here is how it was pitched in "The Tablet" and elsewhere --- “ 'I am committed to ensuring that our Catholic Schools are accessible geographically and financially to the people of our Diocese. When we determined that our schools are operating at only 85% of capacity it became clear that we had to consider why this was happening and how we might reverse the trend' said Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn...." (See "Preserving the Vision" Press Release, [https://dioceseofbrooklyn.org/press-releases/preserving-the-vision/]; see also "The Future of Catholic Schools: Preserving the Vision Calls for Transition to Academies" by Gail Donovan, 1/5/2012, The Tablet/ Uncategorized [https://thetablet.org/the-future-of-catholic-schools-preserving-the-vision-calls-for-transition-to-academies/]).
The original "Preserving the Vision" release is a sort of Rosetta Stone for all of the rest of the double talk and gobbledygook related to the Brooklyn Catholic Schools and Brooklyn Parish reorganizations.
It's all there hiding in plain sight right up front for all to see in the Diocesan press release cited above: "As president of each parish corporation, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has asked that a diocesan wide strategic planning process, that would ensure the long term stability of Catholic schools in the diocese, be undertaken. The Diocesan Reconfiguration Committee (DRC) submitted its twenty-nine (29) regional proposals to ensure the long term vitality and strength of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn.... The process entitled “Preserving the Vision” was initiated by the (DRC) in the beginning of September [2011?]. It has involved the unprecedented collaboration and input of parents, teachers, principals, Parish and community leaders, pastors and Diocesan employees....".
So it's clear that it really is part of the "Jesus Christ Our Hope" parish reconfiguration process, which had been announced in 2010 and talked about before that, but then submerged like a U-boat stalking a distressed convoy for targets.
If anybody might doubt that, then look at this 2011 article in "The Tablet" (See "Christ Jesus, Our Hope – Reconfiguration Has Brought New Life to Neighborhood Schools" by Jay Akasie, 10/12/2011, The Tablet/ Uncategorized [https://thetablet.org/christ-jesus-our-hope-reconfiguration-has-brought-new-life-to-neighborhood-schools/]). Be careful, don't get lost in all the love and lollipops about "saving" a few schools just a few years ago; look at it as background, context and prologue for what also happened in Bay Ridge just a couple of years ago and what's going on NOW.
Keep all of that in mind when you go looking for the Mike Long and John Quaglione quotes in the recent "... Tablet" take on the closings of the parish-based schools in OLA and St. Anselm's (See "Bay Ridge Schools Plan for Combined Academy" by Andrew Pugliese, 11/7/19, The Tablet/ Diocesan News [https://thetablet.org/bay-ridge-schools-plan-combined-academy/]).
There will be plenty of Pollyannas and other sheeple out there that will tell you that I'm just weaving a tall tale to cause mischief, and that none of this will come to pass. But just remember --- ".... Istanbul was [once upon a time] Constantinople...." and many of that city's great mosques were once glorious Christian shrines.
Has Godfather Bishop Nicky Mars been spotted talking to any oil sheiks lately ???
After all "...the great tapestry brick behemoth that is OLA..." should soon be available thanks to Mike Long and his board for the old parish school in OLA and John Quaglione and his board for the old parish school at St Anselm's.
Mike should have stayed in Bushwick.
ReplyDeleteCypress Hills, I think, but not very far from Bushwick.
ReplyDeleteUltimately this is what happens when a religion becomes focused on pomp, circumstance, and protecting child molesters, rather than feeding the hungry and ministering to the poor.
ReplyDeleteCypress Hills or Bushwick still have churches to sell. I guess those neighborhoods have a Q to put a smirk on it.
ReplyDeleteLong vision and deep pockets
ReplyDeleteBACKGROUND & BACKFILL: THE "PLENTY OF VILLAINS TO GO AROUND" EDITION
ReplyDeleteMIKE LONG IS NOT >>> THE <<< VILLAIN OF THIS PIECE, HE IS ONLY >>> A <<< VILLAIN IN THIS PIECE.....
THE PLANNED MERGERS OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WAS ALWAYS PART OF THE LARGER DIOCESAN PLAN TO MERGE WHOLE PARISHES
IT'S FUNNY THAT MIKE LONG'S "VISION," EXPRESSED IN HIS QUOTE MADE JUST IN THIS LAST MONTH, IN OCTOBER 2019, TRACKS CLOSELY WITH A QUOTE MADE BY THE DIOCESAN SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS MADE MANY YEARS AGO IN OCTOBER 2011
THE QUOTE BY THE DIOCESAN SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS WAS MADE IN THE CONTEXT OF COMPLETELY MERGING PARISHES WITHIN THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN AND QUEENS
It's all here in black and white: "The lion’s share of the current diocesan reorganization plan – Christ Jesus, Our Hope — involves identifying which parishes can operate best when merged into another parish nearby.... One of the little known aspects of these parish mergers is that schools that are often attached to the parish continue to operate after the merger. Parishes are now being asked to reorganize their schools into strong, prominent Catholic academies that are suited to the needs of 21st-century families.... [Mentioning a situation in Howard Beach] 'These new academies ensure that entire neighborhoods won’t be lacking a Catholic school,' said [The Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Brooklyn, Dr. Thomas Chadzutko]." (See "Christ Jesus, Our Hope – Reconfiguration Has Brought New Life to Neighborhood Schools" by Jay Akasie, October 12, 2011, The Tablet/ Uncategorized [[https://thetablet.org/christ-jesus-our-hope-reconfiguration-has-brought-new-life-to-neighborhood-schools/]).
Isn't Eaton with cathedral club and "claim" to be close with bishop D also .
ReplyDeleteNo scorn for him also??
Our houses of worship revolve around the outcome of civil cases against pedophiles.
ReplyDeleteRESPONSE: THE "STRATEGIC PLANNING THING" EDITION
ReplyDeleteTO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 9:05 AM"
THIS ISN'T ABOUT "... THE OUTCOME OF CIVIL CASES AGAINST PEDOPHILES...." RIGHT NOW THERE ARE PROBABLY UNDER A THOUSAND CASES PENDING UNDER THE NYS CHILD VICTIMS ACT OF 2019; BY THE END OF THE WINDOW NEXT YEAR THAT NUMBER COULD DOUBLE OR TRIPLE
It's estimated that thousands of New Yorkers that were molested or sexually abused as children have been waiting for years, and in some cases for decades, for their day in court; and starting on August 14, 2019 they have a one year window to bring their cases to court and receive monetary compensation from responsible parties.
When that day arrived in mid-August of this year, it began with a stunning barrage of lawsuits around New York State, with the vast majority naming a variety of Catholic Church and related entities. Hundreds of suits were electronically filed on the first day alone.
My comment above doesn't address anything related to the NYS Child Victims Act of 2019 or any other avenue of compensating victims of priestly and religious, and any other Catholic Church agents or employees for sexually abusing children over the last 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years.....
My comment above related only to the wonten destruction of Catholic Communities that had existed for Brooklyn (and Queens) Catholics' whole lifetimes as ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISHES.....
The villains here begin somewhere at the top, possibly even higher that the local corrupt boss, Godfather Bishop Nicky Mars, and trickle down through a variety of gunzels and toadies to guys like Mike Long and John Quaglione.
What's wrong here is the cynicism and perfidy being veiled under a welter of Catholic Church coded names and jargon mixed up with some fanciful notional business management blah-blah-blah about strategic management and planning.
One key to how silly and benighted all of this is can clearly be seen in the words and pictures of one of the more revealing of the 2011 puff pieces about the planned "Christ Jesus, Our Hope" parish reconfigurations (See "Christ Jesus, Our Hope – Diocese Has a History of Adjusting to the Times" by Jay Akasie, 10/21/11, The Tablet/ Uncategorized [https://thetablet.org/christ-jesus-our-hope-diocese-has-a-history-of-adjusting-to-the-times/]). In that article there is a picture of two past leaders of the Brooklyn Diocese --- one engineered the biggest strategic planning disaster leading to the current implosion, the late 50s-early 60's building program; and the other personified the tolerance of the moral rot of pedophilia in the Brooklyn Diocese. The complete wrong-headedness of the cover for the current "Implosion Conspiracy" in Brooklyn is the obvious praise for Archbishop McEntagert's super building program. The Brooklyn version of the American Catholic Church's "Edifice Complex" was held up as an example of good strategic planning, when it patently was not. Although it does provide Godfather Bishop Nicky Mars with lots of goodies for his fire sale.
In the big picture the show is closing. The costumes are going into storage.
ReplyDeleteIf they had to pay property taxes these places would have closed 40 years ago
ReplyDeleteInteresting point...
ReplyDeleteShould churches, organized charities and any sort of institutions with an eleemosynary stream of any sort be taxed at all, or at least be taxed on their holdings and/or activities which do not have a specific religious or charitable purpose or result?
Observations
ReplyDeletea- Quaglione sends his sons to public school - not that theres anything wrong with that (I send my kids to public school too) but you don't see me acting as if I know what is best for the Future of Catholic Education in Brooklyn
b- Quaglione works for the Diocese. Is that not a mega conflict of Interest???
c- Quaglione's handling of this P.R. disaster has been a disaster. How the heck is this man the chief spokesperson for the embattled Catholic Church in New York?????
The question begs
Q is still in the press while the other 2017 gop pretenders wither away
ReplyDeleteQuaglione doesn't handle PR disasters.
ReplyDeleteQuaglione is a PR disaster.
