Don’t forget, John Quaglione is supposed to be Marty Golden’s “Communications Director”

I was all set to make this posting only about John Quaglione’s social media presentation of himself and the very limited self-coverage of his campaign  ---  my conclusion would have been that it’s not an exaggeration to say that his Twitter and Facebook footprint has been and continues to be  >>>  ABYSMAL

Then I got a look at the  most  recent comments following my earlier post on this blog,  “At long last, my critique of the ‘Third Man’ in the race for the GOP nomination for City Council for the 43rd District --- Liam McCabe”  ---  starting at comment, “Anonymous said…   June 8  at 10:59 AM”  and  continuing through several later comments  ---  AND  ---  It was then I realized that Mr.  Q  was even more challenged as  Marty Golden’s  “Communications Director”  than I had previously thought

If Mr. Q’s opponents want to start deconstructing the candidate called  “Q”  by some and the  “Q”  campaign,  they could easily begin with a critique of  “Q”   as Marty Golden’s  “Communications Director.”

I routinely check out the social media postings by the GOP candidates running for City Council in the 43rd Council District.   I run a Brooklyn Republican oriented blog,  so why wouldn’t I regularly eyeball the Tweets and Facebook footprints of the candidates in the most competitive GOP primary in Brooklyn in 2017….

It didn’t take me long to conclude that Quaglione’s stuff lagged the field for a variety of reasons,  some of which I have commented about specifically in the past  (you know,  things like pictures of empty or near-empty rooms for Quaglione’s announcements,  in-home get-togethers and  scheduled  campaign events).

Then,  it occurred to me that near the top of JQ’s list of his  “supreme qualifications”  is the hat  that he wears on State Senator Marty Golden’s staff as  “Communications Director”…..   Really, Mr. Social-Media-Malaprop JQ does keep pedaling that canard ! ! !  (I don't dispute the title,  but I do find the underlying reality to be quite problematic.)

How can somebody who’s so badly represented on Twitter and Facebook convince anybody that he is now or ever has been an effective or positively affective  “Communications Director” for Marty Golden or anybody else ? ? ?

Something else popped up earlier this evening that buttresses any critique I might make of  “Q”  as Golden’s “Director of Communications”  ---  or that anybody might make,  for that matter

Earlier this Friday evening, I was surveying the comments on my blog,  which I often do in my capacity as the blog administrator and moderator of  “The Brooklyn Independent GOP Fountainhed.”   I noticed that part of a recent comments thread  [the one mentioned above in the sub-headline, At long last, my critique of the ‘Third Man’ in the race for the GOP nomination for City Council for the 43rd District --- Liam McCabe”  ---  starting at comment, “Anonymous said…   June 8  at 10:59 AM”  and  continuing through several later comments]  were giving Marty Golden and the Quaglione campaign a real tanning over the mishandling of the Golden endorsement with some member(s) of the local press.

“EUREKA ! ! !”  says I  ---  this ties in with my critique of the candidate called  “Q”  by some and his resume item of being Marty Golden’s  “Communications Director.”

WHO MORE THAN JOHN QUAGLIONE SHOULD BE BLAMED FOR THE  >>> EPIC FAIL <<<  OF MARTY GOLDEN’S ENDORSEMENT OF HIS ALLEGED  “COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR”  THAN THE  “COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR” HIMSELF ? ? ?   Can there be any dispute ? ? ?   Can there be anybody else nearly as culpable than the chief beneficiary and the one charged with controlling the roll-out of the endorsement ? ? ?

It even gets worse

Right now,  the only thing clearly coming out of the Quaglione campaign are whines, gripes and complaints.

I can’t report that the wheels have come off the  “Q” train yet,  but they are getting very, very squeaky;  and the “Communications Director”-Candidate that some call  “Q”  can’t seem to find the right oil can to stop the squeaks, or the plugs and patches to stop the leaks.

To quote Colin Quinn,  “That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.”

  1. The ultimate evidence of Quaglione's "political" and "communications" skills came several years ago after a tragic vehicular accident involving an elderly Bay Ridge grandmother, and Marty Golden's white Cadillac Escalade SUV. She went into a coma, and a few years later passed away.

Let's be clear: Senator Golden was NOT at fault here. The elderly woman's children immediately stepped forward and absolved Marty of any blame, telling police and reporters that their mom simply stepped out into the oncoming traffic without looking.

End of story, right? Not so fast. One of NYC's intrepid tabloids refused to let go of the case, filing several stories over the days following the accident.

So, finally, about 48 hours (!) after the vehicular accident, a statement was released by Senator Golden's office, prepared and written by -- guess who -- John Quaglione.

Call him the Communications Director, call him the Press Secretary, the critical aspect of Quaglione's job is using words as weapons to achieve his boss' goals. And it was never so important as when his boss was involved in a car accident that struck and seriously injured an elderly constituent. And remember: Golden was absolutely not at fault here.

So Quaglione finally releases the official statement, which gives a minute-by-minute account of the vehicular accident, and Golden's response. It went something like this:

"Senator Golden's SUV was stopped at the intersection with a red light."

    "The light turned green."

"Senator Golden ACCELERATED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION."

Words indeed are weapons, especially when you use them on yourself and your boss.

He actually used the word "accelerated." He could have said continued, moved, proceeded, or any of a dozen words to indicate forward movement without rocketlike speed.

This is the John Quaglione who sat there last week at an event for reporters, as Marty hurled petty personal slurs against a local Democratic candidate.

He's not a bad guy (though his constant conflict scheduling of rival events when he learns of an upcoming fundraiser for an opponent, is showing him to be quite a douchebag), it's just that he's not a very bright or talented guy, and he certainly is no human dynamo.

Why on earth would anyone vote for this third rate hack?

  2. Marty drives like a cowboy. He killed that old lady.

And where do you get this stuff about old lady family saying Marty was in the right? The Home "We Cover for Marty" Reporter?

  3. Her adult children came forward IMMEDIATELY and absolved Marty of any blame. It wasn't his fault, and the New York Post and Daily News, among other newspapers, reported as such.

Don't take your eye off the ball. The issue is how badly Quaglione screwed that one up with the use of a single word: "accelerated."

  5. Gaily-babes, please tell your readers that some things and times aren't fun, and not everything is funny.
For the record, the accident happened on August 6, 2005 at Third Avenue and 84th Street in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. The pedestrian victim was named Hariklia Zafiropoulos (sometimes she's been identified as 'Harkli Zafiroulos'). She was born on March 18, 1931 and she died on February 18, 2006 at 74 years of age.
That means she survived only six months after the accident, not 'a few years later' like was stated in one of the comments above.

  6. Bottom line:

Quaglione's single most critical moment as Marty's press secretary, and he screwed it up, big time.

TO MANY IF NOT ALL OF THE ABOVE COMMENTERS ABOVE ON THIS THREAD

YES, I KNOW WELL AND DO BELIEVE "... THAT SOME THINGS AND TIMES AREN'T FUN AND NOT EVERYTHING IS FUNNY..." --- BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S MY PLACE TO TELL ANYBODY THAT THEY HAVE TO HAVE THE SAME VIEW OR OPINION

AS FOR THIS THREAD'S TOPIC: JOHN QUAGLIONE'S CLAIM THAT HE'S SOME KIND OF "COMMUNICATIONS..." GUY --- THE MARTY GOLDEN SUV ACCIDENT WITH THE OLD WOMAN PEDESTRIAN IS NOT ONE OF JQ'S FINEST PIECES OF WORK --- AND HIS INABILITY TO KEEP IT FROM BLOWING UP ANEW EVERY FEW YEARS SHOWS HOW BAD HE REALLY IS AT COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA

In preparing for this responding comment I found several items wherein news releases and statements accompanying legislation literally begged for a reopening of the discussion of the 2005 >>> FATAL ACCIDENT <<< involving State Senator Golden's driving his SUV around the neighborhood. It is completely the province of a "Communications Director" like John Quaglione to see that his boss steers clear (see what I did there...) of such traps and pitfalls.....

Also note: I have found that suddenly John Quaglione is "untitled" at several locations on SSMG's website)

  13. RESPONSE; UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE "NEW YORK POST" EDITION

TO: EVERYBODY INTERESTED OR INTRIGUED BY THE REFERENCE TO JULIANNE CUBA IN SOME OF THE COMMENTS ABOVE

THE JULIANNE CUBA PIECE HAS BECOME CITY WIDE NEWS THANKS TO THE NEW YORK POST'S COVERAGE OF THAT STORY BY CARL CAMPANILE

This comment appeared on another thread very early this morning:

"Anonymous said... Gailykins [just somebody's idea of an idea], enough BS about who does whose bidding [referring to other matters].
The big news is that Carl Campanile in the NY Post is covering the "Fat Boy" gaff by Marty Golden. BUT IT GETS EVEN BIGGER.
Carl Campanile of Post has said city wide that Marty Golden threatened the lovely Julianne Cuba if she reported on his gaff, and she did as we all know.
    June 9, 2017 at 11:11 PM"

So that everybody is up to speed, here's what the big buzz is all about:

According to an article in today's Post by Carl Campanile, "The fat’s in the fire in the race for a Brooklyn City Council seat.... Referring to a Democratic candidate for the Bay Ridge seat, Republican state Sen. Marty Golden described him as “fat boy” when he couldn’t recall his name during a media event with his chief of staff, John Quaglione.... Quiglione is running for the same position, which is being vacated by Councilman Vincent Gentile — who is supporting his own aide, Justin Brannan...." (See "State senator forgets opponent’s name, calls him ‘fat boy’ " by Carl Campanile, 6/9/17, NY Post/ Metro [http://nypost.com/2017/06/09/city-council-member-forgets-opponents-name-calls-him-fat-boy/]).

From my point of view, this is by far the most damaging part of the Campanile-Post story: ".... Golden did not immediately returns requests for comment.... The story was first reported by the Brooklyn Daily, whose reporter — Julianne Cuba — wrote that Golden 'warned me not to publish his gaffe, claiming if I did so that I’d never have a sit down with him again.'... The story was published Friday." So now this has become a city-wide story about how a burly and rough-'n'-tumble ex-cop state senator tried to put the gorilla on the diminutive local reporter, Brooklyn's own Julianne Cuba.

For those interested, here is the cite for the Julianne Cuba article that Marty Golden didn't want you to see --- so much so, that he tried his own brand of censorship to stop it (See "Golden gaffe: State senator insults Dem Council candidate" by Julianne Cuba, 6/8/17, Courier Life's Brooklyn Daily/ News/ Party Line [http://www.brooklyndaily.com/stories/2017/23/pl-party-line-2017-06-09-bk.html]).

According to Ms. Cuba's account, ".... Quaglione’s campaign invited local reporters for a 'press-only sit down with State Senator Marty Golden and John Quaglione' at the Bridgeview Diner on June 1. I sat down right across the table from Golde, with my notebook out, and when he jokingly referred to Brannan by size rather than name, I jotted it down.... Golden notice and said, 'You look like a reporter.'... He then turned to the campaign manager and told him he wished he had been informed he was sitting with reporters — despite the fact the event was billed as a 'press-only sit down' — and then warned me not to publish his gaffe, claiming if I did so that I’d never have a sit down with him again...."

Marty the ex cop runs over and kills an old lady and the cops conclude its the old ladies fault. How original is that?

  16. I read above that the family of the lady who died stated it wasnt Golden's fault and that their mom stepped in front of the car. I do recall there being a lawsuit filed by the family for "negligence" and that they collected a lot of money from the lawsuit, so how could they collect money if the family stated it was their mother's fault. Something smells fishy here my friends. I will pull up info on the case and post it if I can find it on the internet.....

  18. RESPONSE: THE "DON'T GET LOST IN THE WEEDS" EDITION

TO EVERYBODY WHO CAN"T SEEM TO FOCUS ON THE ISSUE --- IS IT FAIR AND ACCURATE FOR JOHN QUAGLIONE TO CLAIM THAT HE IS MARTY GOLDEN'S "COMMUNICATIONS..." GUY WHEN PAST AND PRESENT PERFORMANCE PRETTY MUCH PROVES THAT JQ IS NOT

It's a good thing that some of the commenters above aren't game fish.... They seem to bight hard on any shiny thing that passes.

Right now, it's not about who is fat or chubby or big-boned; and it isn't about Marty G's driving or who was at fault in a particular incident. It is about the candidate that some people refer to as "Q" claiming that among the three GOP guys running for City Council from the 43rd District he has the "supreme" qualifications and credentials; and at or near the top of that list was/is Q's job as a press and/or communications guy for Golden.....

    ReplyDelete
  19. Gail, you should know about this, you have lots of friends on and near 79th Street. Dig into this, it will be a gold mine for anybody that's anti-Q.

Quaglione did his usual social media thing today and it leaves him wide open to getting whacked again on the way he has done his job at Marty Golden's office.

His post on Twitter was about the "Saturday Night Fever" house on 79th Street, but he must have forgotten that just a few doors up the block form that house was another blighted property that people called him about for years without significant result. At least one neighbor on that block described John Quaglione as an absolute bungler when it came to those complaints. In 2013 when Q ran for City Council the first time, this particular 79th Street neighbor, who didn't like Vinny Gentile either, told everybody she knew not to vote for Q because of how bad he was with this one single problem over the years.

  22. RESPONSE: THE "JUST A LITTLE RESEARCH" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 10:59 PM"

I HAVE LONG KNOWN ABOUT THE PERENNIAL PROBLEMS AT 237 79TH STREET --- INDEED, I DO HAVE MANY FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES ON THAT BLOCK --- INDEED, I SPECIFICALLY REMEMBER SOME COMPLAINTS ABOUT MARTY GOLDEN AND HIS STAFF CONCERNING THAT AND OTHER PROBLEMS THERE

Since the issue at hand is John Quaglione's media savvy and communications skills as Marty Golden's "Communications..." guy, I did a little research about the coverage of the abandoned, condemned, vermin and raccoon infested house that USED TO BE at 237 79th Street [FYI, it was torn down in 2013, with some credit given to Councilman Vinny Gentile for the demolition during the year JQ first ran against him]. If nothing else JQ or somebody else was able to keep Marty Golden's name out of this mess [I know personally that some people were completely dissatisfied with his office's "attempts" to solve this particular problem for many years].

To give this story a little perspective and background: according to one published report, the NYC Department of Buildings said that the house at 237 79th Street had a "Full Vacate Order," with 22 complaints dating back to 1991, eight open violations that went as far back as 1997 and 12 Environmental Control Board violations dating back to 1996; and another report indicated that the owner of the house, abandoned the home in 1987 after he and his wife divorced. At least one neighbor living near the problem sight says that the home owner probably let 237 79th Street deteriorate rather than selling the property and the problem and giving his ex-wife a share following their divorce. There are also reports that in the year before the demolition, Councilman Gentile's staff had tracked down the owner and gotten his agreement to turn the property over to a charitable purpose.

I am led to believe that the handling of the particular problem at 237 79th Street WILL BE A CAMPAIGN ISSUE if it turns out that the candidates in the fall are the man that some call "Q" and Justin B, one of the people that refers to John Quaglione as "Q" [btw, so does Liam McCabe and now obviously me].

  23. The 79th street property is worth over a million dollars. In the end it will be handed to Frank Seddio by one of his Judges and George Clark will get a taste of the action.

  24. RESPONSE: THE "I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT THAT..." EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 11:19 AM"

I doubt that what's gone on at 237 79th Street fits the pattern that you described --- but, maybe if it were ten years earlier than when it was "resolved."

I put "resolved" in quotes, because the 237 sight is still a problem for the >>> neighbors <<< on 79th Street. The new owner-developer has gotten in to a major dispute with at least one of the adjoining neighbors over an adverse possession or easement issue..... That has led to court intervention and several acts of direct "self-help" to either stop or continue construction. The cops have been called to the scene repeated times, and once when construction was on-going somebody blocked some construction equipment and the police had to shut down the whole block for a while to straighten things out.....

Sometimes folks like Seddio and Clark know when it's best to steer clear [ golly, that's twice I've used that phrase in this thread, which reminds me.....].

To "Anonymous said... at 11:19 AM": you clever devil..... You dangled a shiny lure in front of me and I bit down hard on it, thus ignoring my own admonition above in this comments thread.....

Republican voters will see all this played out again and again throughout the summer. Those same voters will not get behind somebody who is proving himself to be a third rate politician, without much hustle, and forever stuck on the staff of a less and less popular hustler.

  31. RESPONSE: THE "WHO MADE THIS COMMENT ???" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 7:40 AM"

THIS IS FAKE NEWS --- ABSOLUTE NONSENSE.....

However, it is interesting to ponder who this commenter might be.

    First, Commenter "... at 7:40 AM" is a Liam McCabe supporter [or is imitating one];

Second, he or she knows that Nate Silver is a statistical analyst and not a pollster; and

Third, by placing Bob Capano last and at 12% --- Commenter "... at 7:40 AM" wants to marginalize Capano; and

Fourth, there is a "wishing it were so" element in the comment.....

My conclusion is that whoever wrote the comment above >>> wants a one-on-one race between Liam McCabe and John Quaglione, with Bob Capano out of it. Since that ONLY FAVORS QUAGLIONE, the commenter above is more like to be "Q" or a "Q" supporter than anybody else..

  38. UPDATE: THE "QUAGLIONE DECIDES TO QUOTE SAL ALBANESE" EDITION

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I COULD GET CLEAR OF THIS THREAD, I LOOK AT JOHN QUAGLIONE'S SOCIAL MEDIA STUFF >>> AND HE PULLS ME BACK IN

I FOUND TWO ITEMS: THE FIRST IS ALMOST INCREDIBLE: AND THE SECOND IS COMMENDABLE [HOWEVER, IT'S LIAM MC CABE THAT EARNS MY COMMENDATION THIS TIME, AND NOT THE CANDIDATE SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS "Q"]

I think that it is almost impossible to find many Republicans, who interact with and promote former Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights City Councilman Sal Albanese. Marty Golden is one; and now, you can add to that infinitesimal group of Republicans --- the one and only John Quaglione. Under JQ's Twitter handle [John Quaglione‏ @JQuaglione] appeared this: "Mayoral hopeful Sal Albanese calls de Blasio 'limousine liberal'...." I won't get into whether this homage to "Sal" is appropriate or not. However, what possible motivation or benefit to Q's campaign in the GOP Primary can come from quoting the one Democrat, above all others, who made the GOP the "also ran party" of Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

The second was a very problematic re-post of one of Liam McCabe's Facebook entries. The reason I say problematic, is that, at first blush, I could see little if any justification for JQ to let this item by one of his current opponents appear anywhere on his pages, or even near them. You see this item was Liam's strongest attack on John Quaglione to date --- and it pretty much said if JQ couldn't stand up to his boss, Marty Golden, when Golden is clearly wrong; how can anybody expect Quaglione to stand up for what is right in the City Council.

As I thought about it further, it's possible that JQ is crafty and cynical enough that he could easily characterize Liam's posted remarks as a joint attack on Republican State Senator Martin Golden as well as on the City Council Candiate in the 43rd endorsed by Golden, John Q, himself. And "Q" obviously wanted everybody that follows his social media to know that one of his GOP Primary adversaries, Liam McCabe, had lashed out at Marty Golden, in addition to Golden's reticent staffer, who happens to be running for NYC Council.
