At long last, my critique of the “Third Man”* in the race for the GOP nomination for City Council for the 43rd District --- Liam McCabe

He broke from the gate well  ---  outpacing Capano in the early fund raising  ---  AND  ---  forcing Quaglione’s hand by making him enter the race earlier than he wanted and not really prepared for a tough fight for the Republican and Conservative Parties’ nominations…..

Even though his campaign remains very present and visible by way of postering, door-to-door introductions and appearances at significant community events  >>>  "Liam" has fallen off the pace in the backstretch leading up to endorsements and petitioning

THE BIG QUESTION NOW IS THIS   >>>   CAN LIAM MC CABE AND HIS CAMPAIGN REGAIN THEIR EARLY FORM AND RETAKE A LEAD DURING AND AFTER PETITIONING AND CHALLENGES ? ? ?

Liam McCabe’s  early organizational efforts caught everybody’s attention,  but it is organizational short-comings that appear to be plaguing his mid-campaign performance.   The McCabe campaign structure looks like it has not grown fast enough for it to maintain it’s early qualitative advantages and quantitative successes.

Not long ago, the candidate himself told me that his small inner circle was as busy as ever,  but that they are dealing with lots of necessary details that just don’t show up to public scrutiny.  ---  And that all of the other campaigns have looked like they slowed down too;  so it's not just the McCabe Campaign that's faltering.

PROBLEMS IN THE INNER CIRCLE ???

When one takes another closer look at the problem,  one finds that the small inner circle of McCabe’s closest supporters are not all pulling for "McCabe the Candidate" in the same direction or in efficient interactive ways.   The problem, as it has been described to me,  is very much like something that I long ago described as a shortcoming of Liam McCabe’s earliest efforts to define and present himself as a candidate.   Now,  as then,  there seems to be an odd distribution of focus among the candidate,  a major outside consultant, and a few former business associates of the candidate, who are acting like a hybrid composite, part consultant and part volunteer.

In spite of obvious intensive effort and activity by the candidate himself,  the campaign  appears to have suffered from a recent depression in messaging and image building;   and that translated into an apparent loss of momentum by the campaign as a whole during April, May and now June.

MORE DISTRACTIONS AND DIVERSIONS COMING !!!

With at least two months of technical heavy lifting in  New York’s onerous  petitioning,  filing  and  challenges process,  and a campaign that lately hasn’t demonstrated its ability to walk,  chew gum  and whistle a happy tune, all at one time  ---  one has to wonder if the Liam McCabe Campaign will ever regain its early form and get back onto its impressive early pace.

Thus far, it doesn’t look like any of the other candidates have established any kind of lead  ---  and certainly not any momentum that will carry through September.  ---  If McCabe does get his mojo back, like he had in the early stages of this 2017 campaign,  then he can win this  GOP primary;  and he is the only GOP candidate that you can say that about.

*  I call Liam Mc Cabe the “Third Man” in this GOP field for several reasons  ---  one of those reasons is that he (like Harry Lime) and his "team" function like a bunch of mysterious outsiders…..   There are more reasons than that,  but I’ll save them for later on in the discussions of all the candidates and their campaigns going forward…..

  1. During April, May and now June, McCabe has been:

    a) campaigning furiously at subway stations (including a massive media event where he drove commuters to the nearest train station when the MTA closed the local 69th Street station)

    b) ringing hundreds and hundreds of doorbells

    c) hosting a forum for the district's Republicans.

Aside from posturing on social media, what actual campaigning have the other three candidates done during this same time period?

  2. At the 5th avenue festical sunday Quaglione had Marty Golden and about 30 supporters walking with him.

    Mcacabe had four people.

Even at least Capano had Curtis Sliwa and about a dozen guardian angels and folks walking with him

  3. Well in all fairness Liam had about six or seven but most of them from Manhattan. That shtick got old real fast.

    ReplyDelete
  4. What is all this chatter about McCabe having people from Manhattan helping him? This is the time of a bit of a slowdown because today is the first day of petitions and its when GOP voters get a knock on the door. That is real campaigning. These stupid street festivals are a waste.

  5. I didn't realize Marty had 30 people on his Senate staff. I guess if you draft parents, spouses and children, it adds up.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I was there saw and heard and smelled. This 'festival' was a celebration of the seediness and swarthyness of contemporary Bay Ridge.
Whatever the three caballeros did there was a waste of time and effort for their biggest hurdle the Republican Primary.

  7. It was like the worst of Sunset Park in the 70s through the mid-80s. I remember because I lived there then.

  8. If sitting in empty dinners wins then its Q

If sitting in staten island wins its capano

If campaigning on streets of bay ridge wins its Liam

  9. None of those things 'win' anything that counts

  10. So far Ghorra looks like he is honoring his McCabe-Quaglione neutrality pledge. 'County' has petitions out with both names.
We're watching closely and listening too; some around Ghorra pushed for Q only. On day 1 Ghorra held up his end, we hope he stays strong behind the deal.

  11. Third Man you say

    Ha !!

    You amuse me Gale

  12. Why did you leave your friend Capano out of the neutrality 'agreement', aren't there some GOP leaders circulating his petitions as we speak?

I DON’T THINK THE “KASPAR GUTMAN/ SIDNEY GREENSTREET” REFERENCE WORKS VERY WELL VIS A VIS MY “THIRD MAN” IMAGERY FOR MC CABE AND THE MC CABE CAMPAIGN..... BUT THE IMAGE IS BOTH LITERARY AND LITERAL AT ONE AND THE SAME TIME

AS FAR AS ANY “GHORRA NEUTRALITY PLEDGE” --- WHAT IS A PLEDGE ??? WHAT IS A POLITICAL PROMISE ??? WHAT IS A POLITICAL DEAL ??? WHO IS IN AND WHO IS OUT ??? AND WHO DECIDES WHETHER ANY OF IT IS BEING KEPT OR “HONORED” ??? --- YOU TELL ME !!!

Ted Ghorra has said lots of things to lots of people about the looming fight to the death for the GOP nomination for City Council in the 43rd Council District. I know that the McCabe folks are very suspicious about Ghorra’s actual intentions going forward; and they are looking closely at his acts and public remarks. I know that Bob Capano’s key adviser, supporter and coordinator with the “Kings County GOP Coalition” thinks that Ted Ghorra is a “… lying POS and no deal with him is worth sh*t....” And I >>> know <<< that some of Q’s supporters in the group actively behind Ted Ghorra’s GOP Chairmanship think that any GOP leadership neutrality is complete BS.

  20. I saw a Capano poster. It says hes running for district leader

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nah, it says he's running for New Leadership.

That's so he can recycle the posters for use back on Staten Island, when his current pipe dream goes up in smoke.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Everybody, stop the silly word games.

When Bobby C says "New Leadership" like on his posters, his fliers or his web page, he means that he represents new leadership. The problem is nobody knows what he is talking about when he says it or writes it, or posts it in shop windows or on the internet. The most important thing of all is this > Doesn't "New Leadership" need "New Followership"?

Only Republican Candidate Liam McCabe has shown that. His campaign has lots of young people. Compare that to Capano's campaign which only has very few young people, but mostly old people and John Quaglione has a couple of Marty Golden cut-out figures and blow-up dolls.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Leave Marty's blowup dolls out of this. This is a family blog, and Colleen might be reading.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I hear McCabe petition fraud has begun and Golden lawyers are on to it

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why is Liam's face on his new batch of posters? Last I checked, when you go to the voting booth only his name will be on the ballot not his face. #Q4U

    ReplyDelete
  26. 8:05. photo posters help voters to connect a name to a face. It personalizes and humanizes a candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The fact that Liam's very young and just out of college Manhattan staff is commenting on this blog is obvious by the fact that they are repeating boiler plate talking points given to them by their parents at Country Club Republican outings. Liam is a good candidate now if only he can find some volunteers and staff that don't have to cross a bridge or tunnel to get here.

  28. Obrien is putting John Orlando to shame highlighting my Marty Goldens gaffe calling Brannan fat boy overshadowing his endorsment of Q at the Bridgeview diner...see Julianna Cuba Party Line Column today...Liam is kicking lazy Qs and Marty Goldens ass every day know..

  30. Love that Julianne Cuba.

A real reporter, unlike some of the typists we so often see at the local weekly newspapers.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Marty Golden should refrain from commenting on anyone's appearance, especially since he looks like a radiation burn victim from his favorite era, the 1950s.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Prime-Republicans are coalecscing around McCabe. Brooklyn Tea Party formally endorsed him yesterday. Mike Long is doing his bidding behind the scenes. Quags shot himself in the foot with Ted Ghorra by circulating bullet petitions and not County petitions. Marty lost confidence after Q's campaign manager didn't tell him there was press at the endorsement meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1038 am is right

Orlando & Golden 7 Q are all idiots..
The endorsement for Q was for press and they didnt know press was there????????

    Go McCabe!!
    Down with Golden & Q

  34. It takes a special kind of idiot to:

    * Hold an event for reporters.
    * Not recognize the one reporter you've been blackballing for months.
    * Then ask her not to print the insulting remarks you just made about another candidate.

  35. Orlando was going all around saying he is going to show O'Brien who the real Brooklyn consultant is... guess not!

  36. RESPONSE: THE "THIS TAKES THE CAKE" EDITION

TO: "ANONYMOUS SAID... AT 10:38 AM" & "... AT 10:52 AM"

MIKE LONG DOING SOMEBODY LIKE LIAM MC CABE'S BIDDING >>> NOT BLOODY WELL LIKELY !!!

Buried in the middle of the first comment referenced above,"... AT 10:38 AM," is this ditty: "... Mike Long is doing [McCabe's] bidding behind the scenes..."

Really !!! Can anybody take that seriously ??? Maybe, it's possible that McCabe is doing Mike Long's bidding, but the opposite is just not possible.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gailykins, enough BS about who does whose bidding.
The big news is that Carl Campanile in the NY Post is covering the "Fat Boy" gaff by Marty Golden. BUT IT GETS EVEN BIGGER.
Carl Campanile of Post has said city wide that Marty Golden threatened the lovely Julianne Cuba if she reported on his gaff, and she did as we all know.

  40. Q and Orlando, and Golden are being taken to the cleaners by McCabe and Obrien

    ReplyDelete
  41. O'Brien doesn't hate Golden.

He just thinks Marty has gotten too comfortable surrounding himself with inexperienced, insecure young advisors who won't speak up when Marty wants to do something dumb, like the Charm School for Women; or the countywide jihad to oust Marty's own protege, Eaton; or encouraging more and more GOP events at the Manor.

  48. UPDATE: THE "FECKLESS, FECKLESS QUAGLIONE SOCIAL MEDIA 'BLITZ' " EDITION

OH, I CAN HARDLY HANDLE THE SUSPENSE ! ! ! NEW QUAGS NEWS GENERATOR IS TOO INCREDIBLE FOR WORDS.....

DID "Q" RAISE HIS $500 IN IN CAMPAIGN FUNDS IN ONLY 24 HOURS --- WELL, THE SHOW "24" USED A SIMILAR STORY LINE DIDN'T THEY ? ? ?

At first, I thought my review of Quaglione's social media site showed: same stuff, different day.....

Then, I saw his biggest news item: a $500 fund raising effort..... In only 24 hours.....

After seeing this brilliant upgrade in his presentation of self and campaign I realized, John QUaglione is no longer a once and future "Communications Coordinator" --- he's now risen to the level of a "Media Master"......

Q's next plateau: "MEDIA DEITY"..... Now, that IS a "supreme" qualification --- It would be multiple strata above any of his competition, Republican or Democrat.....

[[[YES, THAT IS LOTS OF SARCASM ON MY PART.....]]]
