Is Brooklyn GOP State Senator MARTY GOLDEN getting ready to BOLT the REPUBLICAN PARTY ???

Golden bucks the Republican Senate leadership and balks at the GOP Caucus budget proposal on the City University funding formula  ---  Republican-Conservative Golden lines up with liberal Dems like Debbie Glick and Liz Kreuger and AGAINST "his" nominal Republican leadership

Strange things are happening; and even some local Democrats are wondering why

According to a report appearing today on-line from the Wall Street Journal,  "it came as no surprise this week when New York's Senate backed Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposal to cut state funding to the City University of New York....   Few in Albany were prepared, however, when the [Republican led State] Senate, in its own budget proposal, criticized CUNY's handling of alleged anti-Semitism.... In light of the issue, the Senate said it is denying funding until it is satisfied with the school's response 'and this difficult and atrocious situation is adequately addressed.'..."  (See "Fight over CUNY Funding Takes Unforeseen Turn" by Mike Vilensky, 3/17/16, WSJ/ NY Politics [http//www.wsj.com/articles/fight-over-cuny-funding-takes-unforeseen-turn-1458173768]).

BUT BROOKLYN'S MARTY GOLDEN ODDLY BALKED  ---  AND TURNED ON HIS GOP SENATE LEADERS & COLLEAGUES ON THIS ONE  ---  WITH GOLDEN CALLING THE GOP'S POSITION WITHOUT MERIT  & "POLITICALLY MOTIVATED"

The WSJ article, quoted above, went on to observe the following: "in an unusual move, Sen. Marty Golden, the only Senate Republican who represents Brooklyn, rebuked his fellow Republicans' proposal, calling it politically motivated....  Mr. Golden said in an interview Wednesday that CUNY's response to allegations of anti-Semitism 'is not an issue at all. The issue here is a matter of funding, future,'...and we need that funding for our kids' future.'... He said he believed the Senate was simply trying to pressure Democrats into agreeing to other proposals by threatening the funding cut...."

Golden's stab in the back to the GOP earned him a quick rebuttal from the GOP Senate Leadership. According to the WSJ's Mike Viletsky,  "....  A spokesman for Senate Minority Leader John Flanagan defended the [upper chamber Republicans' stance on the CUNY funding].  'This is an important issue....  We are taking a stand against anti-Semitism, wherever it exists...."

In another report,  "State Sen. Ken LaValle, who chairs the [NYS Senate's Committee on Higher Education], said the cost shift [on CUNY] would 'send a message' to CUNY's administration. [Also Finance Chairman Kathy Young added this]:  'These are the things that have been happening at CUNY and these are the things that the Senate Republican conference say are intolerable and must stop.'..."  (See "Senate passes budget resolution after debate on anti-Semitism at CUNY" by Jimmy Vielkind, 3/14/16, Capital New York/ Politico New York beta [http//www.capitalnewyork.com/article/albany/2016/03/8593829/senate-passes-resolution-after-debate-anti-semitism-cuny]).

MANY WERE ALREADY ASKING  >>>  WHAT ARE ALL OF MARTY'S DEALS WITH THE DEMOCRATS ?   >>>   AND NOW THIS !!!

That Marty Golden has long been out-of-step [and often in open rebellion] with his Brooklyn GOP leaders, both in his home district and county-wide, is no secret: it has often been reported-on in posts and comments on this blog. However, NYSSMG's going off the reservation from the Republican leadership of the State Senate --- with several members openly pushing back ---  NOW THAT'S SOMETHING NEW AND DIFFERENT.

As leading Brooklyn Republicans are getting ready to prepare their slates of Republican candidates to try to fill all of the spots on the ballot throughout Golden's  senate district from Bay Ridge to Kings Plaza, one of their open discussions concerns what "deals" Marty has made with various incumbent Democrat office holders in his district, and even a possible "Bigger Deal" with the Democrats' county boss Frank Seddio.

IN LIGHT OF ALL THIS  ---  THESE QUESTIONS ABOUT STATE SENATOR GOLDEN DO ARISE AT THIS TIME

Is the complete absence of any Democrat opposition to Golden's present attempt at re-election the result of a new "Bigger Deal" with Democrat higher-ups in Brooklyn and/or Albany ?  And is Golden's distancing himself from GOP leaders in Albany part of that "Bigger Deal" with and for Golden's getting his easier ride inside his district ?

City University funding formulas are a very big deal to many political constituencies in NYC and in Albany;  is that very big deal part of a "Bigger Deal" for an easy ride for Golden in 2016 ?   OR --- IS SOMETHING AFOOT THAT IS  A  "BIGGER-BIGGER DEAL" THAN ALL OF THAT ????   IS MARTY GETTING READY TO DO A WALK ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ??????   [ BTW, there is some more buzz on this that I am still working on with my Democrat sources.]

  1. It all smells of Marty getting a Wilson/Pakula from Seddio.

  2. The deal with Seddio is a deal Marty had with Vito Lopez.

  3. Everything is transactional, Golden needs this more than ever, because of his lack of a GOP base. So what happens, the price goes up from the Dems and Cons.

  4. UPDATE: THE "PLOT THICKENS" EDITION

THIS JUST IN FROM A BROOKLYN DEMOCRAT

One of my top local Democrat sources just sent me this link: http:/www.capitalnewyork.com/article/albany/2016/03/8593587/democrats-path-possible-senate-control-begins-long-island?top-featured-2

And along with that he e-mailed this: Based on what the Democrat Senators in Albany have been talking about lately, it makes no sense for Golden's Brooklyn seat NOT to be targeted, and the rest of what's going on, unless Marty has a deal with BOTH them AND Seddio.

  5. How can you people over look the fact that in spite of being disabled Marty continues to work hard to bring state sponsored events to the Bay Ridge Manor

    ReplyDelete
  6. That must be due to the hard work of Marty's wife and brother, who actually own and run the Bay Ridge Manor. I'm sure Marty has nothing to do with the operation of that establishment, as he has assured everyone.

  8. COMMENT: THE "KEENAN THOMPSON SNL" EDITION

    [MUSIC] HEY ! WHAT'S UP WITH THAT !!! --- WHAT'S UP WITH THAT ???

I went out to get my mail, like I usually do.... [Cue the John Williams theme from "Jaws"]; I opened the box; and what do you think I found ? [No, it wasn't the shark from "Jaws".....]

It was a nice big post card FROM "The Brooklyn South Conservative Club"; but it was PAID FOR by the NYS Conservative Party. The card was an invitation to a "Meet & Greet" for Congressman Dan Donovan [with a nice picture of Dan on it].

One of the interesting features of this card is that it also contained a portrait of "Club President" -- Liam McCabe; and McCabe's picture was almost as big as Congressman Donovan's. Another feature of the card was that it called for an RSVP only to Liam McCabe.

All of this leads me to post this comment and do my choo-choo-train shuffle dance & sing along with SNL's Keenan Thompson: "... Hey ! What's up with that !!! What's up with that ???

  9. Gale-
I wonder if Congressman Donovan knows what McCabe is doing with his photo & Brooklyn South Conservative Club hyping his meet & greet? I would think Donovan in his district in Brooklyn wants to appeal to moderates, independents, democrats- and not have this event seen as a "Brooklyn South Conservative Party" sponsored meet?

Also, is the photo of McCabe the mug shot one? Republican primary voters & conservatives will not vote for someone with a VERY recent arrest. I was at the Brooklyn GOP office on 17th Avenue just a couple of years ago when McCabe when on his drunk tirade destroying furniture and am looking at a video that clearly shows him in action doing this. The Conservatives should tread very carefully before they go out any further out on a limb pushing McCabe.

  10. McCabe is a loser. Remind me again how the Concannon, Lilikakis, and Raitport campaigns went? I hear McCabe has a part in running some wealthy dude's campaign against Jerry Nadler into the ground.

  11. I heard McCabe had a very good time at the Saint Patrick's Day Parade and at The Pour House on 3rd Avenue afterwards.

  12. All this isn't only about a stunt by some staff guy named McCabe. It's about the Conservatives getting ready to put something over on the Brooklyn GOP. This McCabe jazz has Mike Long's and Jerry Kassar's dirty finger prints all over it.

In it's own way it is a PLAN B after Marty Golden's repeated failures to take over the Brooklyn GOP.

    ReplyDelete
  13. There is no Brooklyn GOP to do anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Did Golden win or lose his lawsuit against Arnaldo and Craig?

    ReplyDelete
  15. If Kassar and Long want to put up some unknown local named McCabe to run for city council, they probably then have a deal with a Democrat such as Peter Abbate.

  16. Good point in comment at 10:40 and if that were to happen expect the GOP Primary field to be as crowded as the presidential.

  17. HOT OFF THE PRESSES-- Capano has decided not to run.

  18. Dan "Dandy Dan" Donovan has other issues besides being viewed as to Conservative.

If you know what I mean

  19. What's up with Dan "Dandy Dan" Donovan and his district director? That's an odd relationship if you know what I mean.
