The new reformer in New York Politics — State Senator Martin Golden

Marty Golden issues his greatest quote ever  —    “The best disinfectant in government is sunlight....”

Is Marty coming to the Ol’ Time Religion of government reformism late in life ? ? ?

Always a strong supporter of the NYPD, Golden is at the right place at the right time standing tall for Police Officers’ rights and being singled-out by the NY Times

After standing tall for “NY City’s Finest” and getting heat for it from the NY Times,  State Senator Martin Golden looks like he is also emerging as a new reformer in New York-New Jersey politics. The same day that the New York Times Editorial Board and other outlets attacked Marty Golden, thus raising him the hero status for defending New York City’s cops against Governor Cuomo and Mayor deBlasio ( See “Police Discipline in New York” NY Times Editorial Board, 12/10/14, NY Times/ Opinion/ Editorial [http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/11/opinion/police-discipline-in-new-york.html]), Marty Golden was extolled as a reformer by the NY Daily News (See “Lawmakers unite to urge Cuomo, Christie to reform Port Authority” by Richard Shapiro, 12/10/14, NY Daily News [http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/lawmakers-urge-cuomo-christie-reform-port-authority-article-1.2040246]).

FOR A CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN EVERY KNOCK BY THE NY TIMES IS A BOOST AND EVERY BOOST BY THE DAILY NEWS IS  —   WELL, A BOOST

Most important, both the News and the Times burnished State Senator Golden’s growing reputation by specifically mentioning him by name when talking about the NYS Legislature generally.

When many of us thought that Golden might be peeing-out after a career of purely retail binge politicking, since late in the campaign of 2014, after the November blow-out of his Democratic opponent, and now with the roll-out of Golden as a senior member of the new Republican majority in the NYS Senate, Marty suddenly has what seems like a new look and a new vitality.  Equally impressive is his apparently new-found ability to do PR pivots like a whirling dervish, witness the win-win coverage in the Times and News yesterday.

  1. Excellent in-depth analysis, Gale. You could write for the New York Post with your skills.

CUOMO WANTS A “SOUP TO NUTS” REVIEW OF ALL FACTORS THAT LED TO ERIC GARNER’S DEATH AND THE “FAILURE” OF THE GRAND JURY TO ACT

NYS GOP STATE SENATORS EXPECTED TO BLOCK IT

MARTY GOLDEN SPEAKS OUT ON PROPOSALS

According to a Kenneth Lovett report in the Daily News, “Some members of the GOP are expressing sympathy over Garner's death, but the [Republican P]arty, which will have full control of the [State Senate] chamber next year, is not expected to embrace proposals if members think [such reforms] could hamstring police. *** ‘You don't want to fix something that's not broken,’ said Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn). ‘We'll look at anything, but I don't know what changes are going to be made.’ *** Golden, a former NYPD cop, branded Garner's death ‘unfortunate,’ but claimed it would not have happened had the Staten Island resident not resisted arrest. *** He also said that the grand jury process — which led to no indictment against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo in Garner's chokehold death — worked properly. ‘I personally think there's no changes to be made,’ Golden said. ‘The system worked. The grand jury acted appropriately.’...." ( See “LOVETT: Following decision not to indict cop in Eric Garner case, state Senate Republicans pose a roadblock to any reform...” by Kenneth Lovett, 12/8/14, NY Daily News
    [http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/lovett-cuomo-vows-justice-system-review-article-1.2037057]).

The Lovett article went on to state that one non-starter for most GOP State Senators would appear to be a proposal being pushed by Democrats that would require special prosecutors, not local district attorneys, to handle cases where police kill unarmed civilians. That specific idea was quickly pooh-poohed by Golden and other Republicans in the Senate GOP Conference.

  4. Mister Massey, you must be proud of yourself, because last week you said, "Marty Golden isn't merely ...Victorious..., he is Triumphant --- And that trend is likely to continue through 2015" and boom the next thing you say about him is look here is State Senator Golden popping up in a big way in the New York Times and the Daily News.

On the other hand, sir, you get to pick what you say is important, so isn't this all kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  5. UPDATE: THE "INCREDIBLE SHRINKING 'COMMON SENSE' " EDITION

WHAT'S UP WITH KASSAR'S "COMMON SENSE" COLUMN LATELY ?

"SILENT MAJORITY" KASSAR COULD JUST AS WELL HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT "SOYLENT GREEN"

In spite of Kassar's claim that he never missed a weekly column, like since forever, it's getting tougher and tougher to find his stuff through the internet. I'm sure that's no accident; and some of that might be due to blogs like this one.

If it were easier to load Kassar's quotes, something like his "Silent Majority..." column would be easier to skewer and serve to those following this blog.

Since I can't do it that way, let me just say this: Read Kassar's Common Sense column this week and see what a hunk of crap it is. "Silent Majority" is less about real people than "Soylent Green."

  6. EXTRA -- SPECIAL UPDATE: THE "PERSONAL INVITATION TO A CHRISTMAS PARTY" EDITION

TURN ABOUT IS FAIR PLAY — I JUST DID A COMMENT ABOVE ABOUT ONE BROOKLYN COUNTY CHAIRMAN, SO I'LL NOW DO THIS ONE ABOUT ANOTHER

My closest and most loyal BSI, just finished having a cappuccino with Brooklyn GOP Chairman Craig Eaton to go along with a brief chin wag about the future of the Brooklyn GOP and to convey Eaton's personal invitation to my operative for the Official Brooklyn GOP Holiday Party.

According to my Number One Baker Streeter, Mr. Eaton seems to think that a lot of what I've written here lately is all wet; and he had his own take on a lot of it (all very off the record). However, rather than the talk about the part of the glass that is half empty, the Chairman would rather that my BSI emphasize how it is half full (and that part of the chit-chat could be reported).

    First, Eaton's okay with the efforts of some activists, who are friends with State Senator Golden, and who are trying to arrange a sit-down between Golden and the Chairman. Eaton himself has reason to think that there might be a thaw in the works, since Golden, himself, has given Eaton a couple of big hellos and long-lost brother embraces — one at a recent Cathedral Club gathering and the other at another holiday gathering;

Second, Eaton plans to do a roll-out at the 2014 Holiday Party on December 22nd of some of his GOP plans going forward into 2015. He assured my trusty reporter that it would contain a surprise or two for everybody that cares about such things, including yours truly; and

Third, whatever rump group of current GOP Executive Members that might have met privately, or are working together against the existing Brooklyn GOP leadership, they are fewer in number and less in sync than reports on this blog might have indicated. For example, part of the conversation included an anecdote about one of those Executive Members, who specifically told another, who is known to be very close to the top Brooklyn Vice Chairman, that there was no support for engineering any 2015 plan that would result in the top Vice Chairman's becoming GOP County Leader under any circumstances.

Even if a complete "Era of Good Feeling" is not in the works, Eaton thinks that better times are coming for a large majority of those now active in the Brooklyn GOP.
