Brooklyn Eagle and Home Reporter “See No Evil” and “See No News” in the U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s investigation of Marty Golden’s Campaign Finances

The dogs that didn’t bark are the same dogs that didn't bark before, and them dogs won’t hunt

Last year, a baseless letter from State Senator Golden to Preet Bharara was news for both of these papers  —   and that’s what comes up when you do a computer search on those names for those papers today  —   Preet Bharara’s current investigation of Golden ?  Not so much !

My Baker Street Irregulars can look long and hard for the coverage of the federal investigation by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in the local paper in Marty Golden’s backyard, the Home Reporter, or in the daily for Golden’s home borough, the Brooklyn Eagle; and the BSIs wouldn’t find much  —  be they Holmesians or Sherlockians.

The only item in either paper which even came close was in one of the Home Reporter’s partisan political columns, “We The People,” written by Brian Kieran (Were there any of you who would have thought it could have been in Kassar’s “Common Sense” column ?).

This was Mr. Kieran’s terse account: “The New York Post reported that U.S. attorney Preet Bharara just opened d an investigation of State Senator Marty Golden’s campaign finances. The Moreland Commission was gathering information about $541,599 that Golden’s campaign paid to the Bay Ridge Manor over the last 10 years. The Manor was owned by Mr. Golden but he sold it to his brother in 2002. U.S. Attorney Bharara promised to continue the anti-corruption investigations initiated by the commission after it was dissolved by Governor Cuomo.” ( See “We The People: Who will bear the GOP standard?” by Brian Kieran, 10/13/14, Home Reporter/ Sunset News [http://www.homereporternews.com/news/government/we-the-people-who-will-bear-the-gop-standard/article_c0760d46-530a-11e4-9075-73cac5e0fc50.html]).

What is odd is that in April 2013, both papers saw fit to give cover and coverage to a letter sent by State Senator Golden to the very same Preet Bharara asking pointless questions about “County Chairman No.1.”  Since Golden was using his letter to Mr. Bharara to link the  indictment of several Queens politicians to the Brooklyn GOP Leader — who was assumed by many to have been “County Chairman No 1” — both the Brooklyn Eagle and the Home Reporter were doing Golden’s work if not God’s.  Of course it turned out that Eaton was not “County Chairman No. 1" after all. If you do a computer search for “Marty Golden”and “Preet Bharara” and put in the names of either of these home town papers, your search will get you last year’s story  —   and nothing about Preet Bharara’s current investigation of State Senator Golden.

You see, both of these papers have a long history of coddling Marty Golden.

THESE DAWGS’ NOT BARKIN’  —  NOT A NEW PHENOMENON  —   AN’ IT SHOWS YET AG’IN,  THESE DAWGS WON’T HUNT

A few years ago these papers did the exact same thing in their relative non-coverage of Marty Golden’s  Kettle Black scandal.  At that time, a predecessor of mine took the publishers of both of those papers,  J. Frank Griffin and J. Dozier Hasty, to task for failing to cover that negative Marty Golden story.  In fact, one particularly astute and articulate comment maker, saw fit to lampoon both of those guys, as dogs that didn’t bark.  He even went so far as to hammer both publishers and their papers when they and their papers were given “Un-Pulitzer Awards” for the  failure to properly cover their favorite State Senator in that big story (You don't get Pulitzer Prizes for non-coverage).

One suspects that if Home Reporter and Brooklyn Eagle were to persist in their failure to cover this story about State Senator Golden and his most recent run in with the law, there will be more “Un-Pulitzers” for the current publishers and editors of the Home Reporter and/or the Brooklyn Eagle.

There’s a good ole boy saying, “That dawg won’t hunt !”  It means that something doesn’t work the way you would want, or generally a bad idea.  In this case, the silence of the Brooklyn Eagle and the Home Reporter shows that their ability to fairly cover State Senator Marty Golden is quite simply a “Dawg that won’t hunt.” You see, a dawg that won’t bark went it’s supposed to, is pretty useless for almost anything else.

  1. The letter to Preet was "fully discussed at the time." No news here.

  2. RESPONSE: THE "OK, BY THE NUMBERS" EDITION

#1 - YES, THE >>>LETTER<<< LAST YEAR WAS "DISCUSSED" BY THE HOME REPORTER AND BROOKLYN EAGLE....

#2 - HOWEVER, THE POST REPORT OF THE SUBPOENA BY THE U.S. ATTORNEY AND MARTY GOLDEN'S ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE INVESTIGATION AND HIS RETAINING ATTORNEYS MONTHS AGO >>> THAT WASN'T "DISCUSSED" AT ALL BY THE HOME REPORTER AND/OR THE BROOKLYN EAGLE

#3 - THAT MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT BE NEWS, BUT, AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, IT IS WORTHY OF NEW COMMENTARY

  3. It's definitely newsworthy because there must be a reason these two papers haven't dug into the story.

Does Golden do any advertising with the newspapers?

  4. I think its interesting that Paula Katinas and Helen Klein haven't touched the Golden investigation.

I guess the Golden house organ only plays Golden's favorite tunes.

  5. Why hasn't Marty been sentenced? Seems like he's been tried and found guilty even though the law of the land says that you are innocent until proven guilty.
If Golden advertised in the Bay Ridge Courier would they not write about him?
Also why did Kemmerer have a fund raiser at a bar on Murray Street in Mahattan?Doesn't he want to support Bay Ridge Brookllyn?
