Is State Senator Golden now also Herr Doktor Professor, Il Dottore di Ricerca and a throw-back to TV’s ‘Mister Wizard’ ? — OR, is this all a send-up like Bob and Ray’s ‘Mister Science’

DID YOU KNOW THAT STATE SENATOR GOLDEN IS THE CHAIRMAN OF SENATE SELECT COMMITTEE ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, INCUBATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP ?  ( Stop laughing so hard, it happens to be true.)

Golden will participate in a “Massive Cybersecurity Hearing” on Monday, November 18th

In case you missed it, State Senator Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) was named chairman of a newly formed New York State Senate Select Committee on Science, Technology, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship on or about March 1, 2013.

The Senate Select Committee was set up to focus on “expanding the state’s entrepreneurial culture, by creating economic opportunities for New York State residents through incubators and economic development programs....”  Senator Golden was awarded the chairmanship of the new select committee in recognition of his efforts to influence the creation of the “Bio-Bat at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, and for his interest and understanding of science, technological, and economic development issues facing New York State.” (See “Senator Golden Named Chair of Senate Select Subcommittee on Science, Technology, Incubation and Entreprenuership” posted by the staff of  Martin J. Golden, 3/1/13, NY Senate Homepage – State Senator Martin J. Golden [http://www.nysenate.gov/press-release/senator-golden-named-chair-senate-select-committee-science-technology-incubation-and-e]).

A select committee is a committee with a special focus. Its job is to conduct meetings, conferences, examinations, and public hearings, and to gather information and make legislative proposals, reports, and recommendations. One of the reasons that State Senator Golden was chosen to head the Senate Select Committee on Science, Technology, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship was that “[h]e has had a long history in science, technological, and economic development issues facing New York State....” In the words of the resolution creating the select committee, its charge is to “provide outreach to and interaction with private and public organizations that provide incubation, innovation, and entrepreneurship programs, and, make recommendations on efforts to strengthen entrepreneurial and job creation including related legislative proposals and resolutions before the State Legislature in such areas, all with the aim of growing the spirit of enterprise and innovation in New York.”

Later today (Monday, November 18th, 2013), State Senator Golden’s Senate Select Committee on Science, Technology, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship is scheduled to participate along with six other state senate committees in a joint hearing to take testimony from experts in law enforcement, finance and computer science about the state’s preparedness against cyber-attacks. several other relevant State Senate committees in a “Public Hearing” on “Cybersecurity: Defending New York from cyber attacks” at  The Griffiss Institute, 725 Daedalian Drive, Rome, New York  Although Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee and is hosting the event, undoubtedly State Senator Golden will be one of the key contributors (See “NY Senate to Convene Massive Cybersecurity Hearing in Rome” posted by Martin J. Golden’s staff, 11/15/13 NY Senate Homepage – State Senator Martin J. Golden  [http://www.nysenate.gov/press-release/ny-senate-convene-massive-cybersecurity-hearing-rome]).

Concerning the cyber-security issue, Senator Martin Golden has said: "As the Chairman of the committee on Science, Technology, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship I know all to well that both individuals and corporations are seeing an increased risk of having their identity and financial information stolen online. Thousands of people each year suffer from cyber attacks, which can take months to repair the damage caused. We need to ensure that personal information is kept protected and we must look at ways to ensure that cyber security in New York stays ahead of those who wish to cause harm."

Since March, Golden’s select committee also appears to have participated in an “Industry and Entrepreneurs Roundtable: Growing Computer and Video Game Development in New York” at NYU-Poly in the Dibner Building, Pfizer Auditorium, 5 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY, on September 20th, 2013; and then held a similar “Public Meeting:” to gather information for the development of policy on Growing Computer and Video Game Development in New York at the Rochester Institute of Technology at the RIT Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction and Creativity (MAGIC), 1600 Student Innovation Hall, Bldg. 87, 102 Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, New York on October 22nd, 2013.

  1. if he is active with his new 'state senate special select committee'. 'senator marty' will give everybody the funniest take on science and technology since 'big bang theory' hit cbs. no need for him to get a continuing role on that show either, with his staff senator golden has the makings of a big hit spin off already to go.

  2. BACKFILL: THE "DON'T MIX UP YOUR DONUTS AND HOLES" EDITION

This State Senate Select Committee on Science and Technology and blah, blah, blah is probably a real big deal for somebody, probably a lot of somebodies.

Let's put all the hacking, cyber-security and Homeland Security jazz aside for another day. It is a big deal -- fine. They're meeting and talking about all that jazz today -- fine -- let them.... Let's go back a bit to those two meetings about the "computer gaming" business "in New York State" -- what's that stuff really all about ? Look at what follows and see what you think.

Golden and others say that New York's gaming software industry still lags behind California, Texas and Washington in number of companies, employees and market share, ranking fourth among the states in the United States for computer gaming industry jobs. Right now, that makes about 5,500 jobs which pay an average annual salary in the high $90s. Don’t focus on that hole or that little donut - - - what about international competition and the international market?

There’s a much bigger donut right here completely inside New York, hence its legislature. If you’re not yet in the business, change the words slightly from “gaming” to “gambling.” Don’t you then get -- "internet gambling" .... Now, tweak that a little bit to “legalized computer gambling”; see where I'm going with this ? (BTW, if you are in the business(es) of computer gaming and/or gambling, “gaming” already meant or included the concept or category of “gambling” and it almost always has). In the area of “computer gaming” that is "legalized computer gambling" -- New York is tied for last with all the other states, except for New Jersey. Even if there is no change in federal law (and who says that will stay unchanged forever), strictly intrastate computer gambling in New York State could still be huge.

Now, think back to Assemblyman Bob Kelly and cable TV and maybe you can see some of the big donuts that State Senator Marty Golden and some others are looking at with this new Senate Select Committee. on Science, Technology and blah, blah, blah.

  3. Think back to Bob Kelly !!
Do you need an AARP card to be a player here?
Think back to Assemblyman Joe "never accomplished anything" Ferris.
He chaired the Assemblys Commission on Science and Technology and had over 20 hacks from his reform clubhouse on the payroll. When confronted with this he stomped his feet in rage and claimed "nobody had a political hook".
Commission had no impact on Ferris as he has not seen a dentist since 1974.

  4. NEWS RELEASE
    For Immediate Release

GOLDEN: LET'S MOVE NYS INTO THE FUTURE

State Sen. Martin J. Golden, Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Science and Technology, today announced a multi-part plan to bring New York State into the future.

Among the items on Sen. Golden's list of new technologies and innovations that he would like to see his committee promote for use throughout the Empire State are:

    * widespread adoption of touch-tone phones, replacing rotary dial phones

    * color television made available on all three major networks

    * FM radio in all major urban areas

"I remain convinced that science and technology are the key to the future," said Golden, "and I dream of a day when all homes in my district will have the benefit of iceboxes and indoor plumbing."

Golden continued, "America is a great country, and no matter where you travel throughout the 48 states, people yearn for newfangled gadgets. I say government should lead the way."

As a result, Golden will introduce legislation in the upcoming session to levy an additional tax on the use of horse and buggies, and add incentives to businesses that move to use of horseless carriages.

  5. This is hysterical. Marty does not know anything about being a police officer, nor does he know anything about being a successful politician - who the HELL in their right mind would let him get involved with this board? Something seems a little "fishy," pun intended.

    1. State Senator Martin Golden should be good fit with government fostered science and technology.

Golden should be a master patron of steam-punk science and technology. It is largely fictional and it looks back fondly on by-gone days and looks for out-of-date technical and scientific solutions to problems as they existed long ago when things were really much better. Sadly, many of those long ago "problems" no longer exist. They were either "solved" by true scientific genius or technical revolution; or, equally likely, ceased being problems as superceding technologies or ways of doing things supplanted the problem-plagued older ways. For example, nobody ever invented the electronic buggy-whip or ever got credit for doing so, because it just wasn't needed. With Marty Golden now in charge, he would probably think that it is a good idea to "incubate" an electronic buggy whip lab that would hire tens or hundreds of electronic buggy whip engineers and technicians -- because that would mean "jobs which pay an average annual salary in the high $90s...."

  6. UPDATE: THE “MARTY GOLDEN ROAMS TO ROME TO HELP DEFEND US AGAINST ‘...A THREAT EVEN GREATER THAN NUCLEAR WAR’ ” EDITION

On Monday afternoon, several New York State senators ( Five Republicans and one IDC Dem ), including Brooklyn Republican-Conservative Martin Golden, gathered at the Griffiss Institute in Rome, NY for a cyber security hearing. The hearing was chaired by State Senator Joseph A. Griffo and was held under a banner that proclaimed “CYBERSECURITY: Defending New York from Cyber Attacks” ( See “Cyber security conference held at Griffiss” by Kristin Clark, 11/19/13, The Rome Observer [http://www.romeobserver.com/articles/2013/11/19/news/doc528a89c32b92f182075748.txt]).

Griffo, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee, stated the following: “Cyber crime is a major economic issue, resulting in more than $500 million in losses last year alone.... There’s a reason why England considers it an even greater threat than nuclear war. We need to take a closer look at what our state is doing to prevent cyberattacks that could affect our security, our economy and our government.”

Even though State Senator Martin Golden was listed as being there, and "[m]ajor New York City-based institutions already have been targeted [– w]ithin the past year alone, American Express, JP Morgan, the New York Times, CitiGroup among others were struck in well-publicized cyber attacks...."; Golden, the only state senator from New York City, would appear to have been bound and gagged throughout the hearings to judge from the media reports of the event, on both TV and the internet ( See “New York State Senate committee chairmen have cybersecurity hearing in Rome” TV report by Gary Liberatore, 11/18/13, WKTV News Channel 2 [http://www.wktv.com/news/local/New-York-State-Senate-committee-chairmen-have-cybersecurity-hearing-in-Rome-232407941.html]).
