Brooklyn’s Golden and Eaton Factions jockeying for position on the clubhouse turn as they move into their stretch run to the Republican Primary and Republican Convention Finish Line(s)

One wag sees it as the Brooklyn GOP organizational fights' influencing the larger scale races of the leading GOP Mayoral Candidates  —  Says it results in Johnny Cats having a better “ground game” in Brooklyn than Joe Lhota  —  On the other hand, lots of Lhota’s ads make it look like Rudy Giuliani is the real candidate for mayor

Letter from Timothy Cochrane has many scratching their heads  —  Who’s supporting Cochrane ?  —  Who exactly does Cochrane support ?

At long last, some observers have noticed the tempest brewing in the Brooklyn GOP teacup. According to NY1 panelist, former Assemblyman Michael Benjamin, the Catsimatidis for Mayor operation has a good ground game going in Brooklyn. Mr. B thinks that it is partially as a result of the organizational fight that’s going on between Brooklyn Republican Chairman Craig Eaton and State Senator Martin Golden (See “NY1: Brooklyn GOP Has ‘Good Ground Operation’ For Catsimatidis...” [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du3oVaHHZoM]; see also “Insiders: Brooklyn GOP's "Team Cats" Gettin' It Done!” by Brooklyn GOP Radio, 8/30/13, Brooklyn GOP Radio -Official- Show Blog [http://brooklyngopradio.blogspot.com/2013/08/insiders-brooklyn-gops-team-cats-gettin.html]).

After a long run of polls showing Catsimatidis gaining on Lhota, a couple of recent polls have shown that Lhota has opened up his lead.  That might be because for some time Rudy Giuliani has been front an center as the big man on Lhota’s campus. Catsimatidis’ supporters with the Brooklyn GOP organization are not amused (See “Who Running For Mayor, Anyways?’ by Gene Berardelli,  8/24/13, Brooklyn GOP Radio -Official- Show Blog [http://brooklyngopradio.blogspot.com/2013/08/who-running-for-mayor-anyways.html]).

Another new development in the Brooklyn GOP county-wide fight for control of the party is a personal letter, dated August 29, 2013, with a bare letterhead that reads only:  “Timothy Cochrane”; however, in the bottom line of the text is the email address: “ - -tjcochrane977@gmail.com”.  In addition to his announced personal ambition to become the next Brooklyn GOP County Leader, Mr. Cochrane seems to be on a quest to find “TRUE REPUBLICANS” of whatever shape or description.

 An oddity of the letter is that it shows absolutely no affiliation with either group vying for control of the Brooklyn GOP; and it only mentions two Republicans by name, David Storobin and Michael Grimm. One has to assume that Mr. Cochrane has the support of the group “Republicans for Change”, because that’s who appears to have paid the postage for the letter. What is very odd is that State Senator Martin Golden is still among the missing when it comes to visible or audible support for Cochrane.  It doesn’t take anybody from any of TV’s CSI labs to know that Marty Golden’s fingerprints, DNA and other identifying information are completely absent from the Cochrane letter.

Does anybody know why ?

  1. I got the letter to - what a joke, and what a clown - obvioulsy Golden must be behind him. He will just be Golden puppet - afterall, that is what Kassar and Golden want. Look at all his statements - I have been active in the party for over 20years and havent seen or heard from Cockrane in over 12 years. He only pops into and out of the GOP when it suits his opportunistic needs - like when he wanted to run for Fossellas seat or then, try to become a Queens resident and run for Weiners seat. Be VERY careful of him. He will just be a puppet. And Timmy why not tell us which candidates you suported or gave $$ to in, lets say, even the last seven years.....I know the answer already. ZIP,

  2. NOT IMPRESSIVE - The man who wants to be County Chair boasts in his letter to having given money and time to help republican canddiates, yet a review of the Campaign Filings of all Republicans in Brooklyn shows only $ 350 to Golden in June 2013 and nothing in 2012 and only a total of $ 375 in 2011 and then paltry sums before then....WOW - it makes you want to SCREAM that a man who pretends to be a heavy hitter gave so little to republican candidates in years....yet his wife gace $ 100 to Vincent Gentile in Jan 2012 - isnt that the same guy their nephwe John Q is running against and bashing every day in the press, blogs,facebook etc....I want to just SCREAM.....

    1. Thank you for your interest and research relative to some of the content in the “Timothy Cochrane” letter.

      BUT — to be fair — that list of donations does verify one of Mr. Cochrane’s claims, “...and I’ve supported, with money [ ], many of our Republican candidates...” As far as such a record goes in demonstrating party loyalty and support, Cochrane’s record of giving $$$$ ain’t bad. However, >>> ESPECIALLY NOTE: Cochrane’s use of the phrase >>> “...many of our Republican candidates...”

      Cochrane’s record of political donations is quite nuanced; and it is quite far from telling a complete story without lots more background. Clearly, Mr. Cochrane appears to have been much more >>> shall we say “generous” <<< in Marty Golden’s early days when Mr. G was eligible for NYC matching funds (as some of my favorite old blogs used to say, “Just sayin’ ”).

      Also, by including all of the Cochrane “household” donations a somewhat interesting pattern emerges. What I see is somebody whose family’s political giving is quite consistent with the history of Marty Golden’s whispered “deals” with certain Democrat office holders. What is most visible is a pattern of equivocal support in the Golden-Gentile City Council District and, with a couple of possible small-donation exceptions, no support for any other Republicans who ran against Democrat incumbents inside the boundaries of the Golden State Senate District. Maybe, looking into that might uncover a key toward understanding which of the “...many of our Republican candidates...” Cochrane has chosen to support over the years.

      The Conservative Party and Faso donations indicate a possible STRONG link to somebody affiliated with the Conservative Party, which has often had a stormy and antagonistic relationship with the Brooklyn GOP over the years. Maybe, looking into that might uncover a key toward understanding which of the “...many of our Republican candidates...” Cochrane has chosen to support over the years. — Oops I said that before, didn’t I ! Make that: “...uncover ANOTHER key...”.

    2. That's all very nice, but Eaton and his crowd need their own keys to victory in 2013 and so far I don't see that.

      If you believe people like Ray Riley, "Republicans for Change" have this all locked up. That would mean Cochrane is in as the new Brooklyn Republican leader after the convention, right?

    3. Ray Riley said Allegretti had it all locked up too...

  3. If he mentioned 'Grimm' an 'Starobin' in his letter, he's a little phony and a coldblood too. Because neither of them is on his list and Bob Turner isn't onit either. Is anybody going to try to explain that pattern/ And he uses his wife to covers his tracks by his wife giving money to the Democrats

  4. UPDATE: A contrary view appeared in the main stream media to what was expressed by Mr. Berardelli in his post, “Who Running For Mayor, Anyways?" from the Brooklyn GOP Radio blog, above (See “Where's Rudy? Giuliani Is Scarce in Mayor's Race” by Jonathan Lemire, 9/1/13, ABC News/AP [http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/rudy-giuliani-scarce-mayors-race-20130635]). According to the ABC/AP report, “Rudolph Giuliani...has been used sparingly on this year's campaign trail even though he has endorsed a former aide [Joe Lhota]. *** That may not be an accident. Although Giuliani's popularity was high in New York City for much of his tenure and soared here and beyond as "America's mayor" for his response to the 2001 attacks, that's no longer the case. Appearing on the campaign trail could hurt his former deputy mayor and budget director, Joe Lhota, as much as help him, observers say.” However Mr. Lemire also made particular note of the same Giuliani ads for Lhota that were criticized by Gene Berardelli.

  5. I just got a copy of Cochrane's letter - everything he complains about stems from Golden's continually placing obstacles in Eaton's way....and the letter is so inaccurate....

    His inaccuracies are as follows:

    a) from what I know he was never the Vice Chair of the Brooklyn GOP - he was Chair of the Finance Committee for a few months but never Vice Chair - AND he has not been seen or heard from in over 6 years;

    b) he ran for Congress on the CONSERVATIVE LINE - I just want to SCREAM! He allowed a Dem to win that race by splitting the vote - SHAME ON HIM - BTW - I am "SCREAMING" that...

    c) Golden never want a lot of GOP Candidates, since it just siphons money away from the Golden boy;

    d) he doesnt want events to grow and build the party, unless they are at the Bay Ridge Manor which he doesnt ????own so he pushes to have all events in Bay Ridge;

    e) he didnt want a BP candidate since that would take $$$ away from John Q;

    f) AND the majority of the State Committee candidates that were removed from the ballot, we all the Republicans for Change" candidates.

    1. When does Golden show up and put his weight behind all this "Republicans for Change" and Timothy Cochrane stuff ? OR is he waiting to see if it works first and will take credit for it after ?

    2. Don't be silly Gale, his mail and robocalls will come soon enough. It's part of the Marty Golden load.

      I hope nobody thinks Marty Golden is safely sheathed for this current outpouring on Brooklyn Republicans. Everybody knows it's all his guys showing up every step of the way and Golden was already at 2 or 3 RFC events. When everywhere you look it's his jizz on the lamps, on the TV remote, on the mirror.... you don't need a CSI team to tell what happened.

  6. The Golden touch hurts Republican candidates. Can you name ANY that have won a race that isn't a democrat and had his "backing?"

    He was AGAINST Storobin.

    He was AGAINST Grimm.

    He is FOR Greenfield.

    Nuff said.

  7. UPDATE: One of the Republican Organizations continued to robo-call in one of the heavily contested districts. In the meantime, a pattern of distribution has emerged for the Timothy Cochrane letter with several 2013 delegate designees reporting that they have received copies of Cochrane's letter.

  9. PUPPET AND PUPPETEER

    Is this the same Timothy Cochrane who ran for congress mostly in Staten Island, getting under 3% of the vote. Didn't he do it at the last second for Kassar and the Conservatives against the Republican nominee in 2008, but only after about half a dozen other Republicans had been mentioned for the spot first.

    Then a couple of years later, after Weiner did his selfie thing, didn't the same Tim Cochrane try to elbow his way into a race for that congressional seat by trying to pull the rug on Bob Turner, a strong Brooklyn GOP nominee, whom everybody predicted would have the best shot at winning, which he did with no help from Cochrane, who didn't even live in the Weiner-Turner district that was mostly in Queens?

    1. This is the same Tim Cochrane who wants everybody to think he's an ordinary good old "Mac Marine" -- "Brooklyn Mutt" -- "Community Activist" but it can be argued that the life he's led most of his life is a "Pampered Poodle" inside operator. If you can't identify the reference, ask either Cochrane or another good old GOPer John Reinhardt.

  10. UPDATE: I must confess that I just opened my very own “I am writing to introduce myself... Tim Cochrane... Leader of the Kings County Republican Party...” letter. It made my heart go pitter-pat; and I must admit, I didn't care who supported Tim Cochrane or whom it was that Tim Cochrane supported. I reached crescendo very quickly after reading my very own letter from Timothy J.... I found it tough to control my emotions, because I never got a similar letter from Craig Eaton.

    This song tells it exactly how I felt it, just a little while ago:

    I just got an invitation through the mails:
    "Your presence requested this evening,
    It's formal, a top hat, a white tie and tails."
    Nothing now could take the wind out of my sails.
    Because I'm invited to step out this evening
    With top hat and white tie and tails.

    I'm puttin' on my top hat,
    Tyin' up my white tie,
    Brushin' off my tails.
    I'm dudin' up my shirt front,
    Puttin' in the shirt studs,
    Polishin' my nails,
    I'm steppin' out, my dear,
    To breathe an atmosphere
    That simply reeks with class;
    And I trust that you'll excuse my dust
    When I step on the gas,
    For I'll be there,
    Puttin' down my top hat,
    Mussin' up my white tie,
    Dancin' in my tails.
    -- IB/FA

    Craig never made me feel like that.

  11. Gale, I hope Craig send you a letter. Is there any particular color of paper you would prefer?

    But I am sure, Craig's letter would be truthful and factual. Not a bunch of lies.

    Someone should ask Timmy to prove all of his claims. What I think is funniest, is that he claims to be THE Vice Chair for many years, and then goes on to state how bad the party has been. If you have been THE Vice Chair, wouldnt you be partly to blame? And if you have not been THE Vice Chair, you are a liar - either way I want to SCREAM that you are a loser.

  12. UPDATE – MAMAS AND THE PAPAS EDITION: Earlier today, having just emerged from Grand Central Station “...I stopped into a church I passed along the way – I got down on my knees and I began to pray...”

    The priest on the altar of the upper church at St. Agnes, of Bishop Fulton Sheen fame and a long gone boys HS of the same name next door, intoned a reading of St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians. Among mightier and absolutely unimpeachable authority, Paul’s letter was by the will of TIMOTHY.

    I was thunderstruck and wondered if this were a sign from on high coming the morning after I’d received my letter from another TIMOTHY. To think that just last night, I had treated it all as an item of giddy fascination with some of my ribald commentary above; and worse yet, I even made light of it in a comparison to the showy words of Irving Berlin with its almost automatic oblique reference to the iconic performance by Frederick Austerlitz of Berlin’s words and music.

    After my brush with a metaphysical moment, I am left to wonder — What brand of political science, divinity studies or divination can lead me from my perplexity over the Timothy Cochrane letter ?

    ReplyDelete
  13. UPDATE: There are signs and there are signs. When a State Senator makes a phone call and asks for your help -- asks for your vote -- says he'll remember -- now that's a sign of something.

    So in addition, to the LETTER FROM TIMOTHY we now have CALLS FROM MARTY.
    It's about the same number of reports for letters and calls; and my operators say it's from the CC designees in unchallenged EDs. It must be an odd message though, because all the people who spoke to Marty Golden have asked the higher ups on their side of the aisle similar questions, like: What's Marty running for that he needs my vote? What does the State Senator mean that he needs my help and he'll remember who helped him ?

    Funny thing the people who received Marty Golden's calls don't remember hearing any names that sounded like Clorinda Annarummo, Dominick Sarta or Timothy Cochrane.
