The fight for and against the “Free Radicals” in the Brooklyn GOP Primary of 2013 is a big part of the battle between the “Republicans for Change” and the Regular Kings County Republican Party Organization

The “Anti-oxident” wing of the Brooklyn GOP (a group that openly stated that they wanted no independent activity inside the Brooklyn GOP) split early in 2013 into the Golden-plated “Republicans for Change” and the Eatonians, long-time stalwarts of Craig Eaton's Brooklyn GOP County Organization. Both of these non-independent Republican groups have made their early moves on certain blocks of what best can be described as the “Free Radical” Republican independents, organizationally represented by the Brooklyn Young Republican Club, The Brooklyn Tea Party (Republicans) and the LaGuardia Republican Club.

Make no mistake the leadership of the Brooklyn GOP from now until after the 2014 New York State Republican Convention is at stake in the current BOE hearings and the NYS Supreme Court cases, which are now going on over which slates of State and County Committee candidates will or will not appear on the old election machines in the Brooklyn 2013 GOP Primary. However, even after all of that is decided, there probably will be a lot left for Brooklyn Republicans to haggle over until the primary allows rank and file Republicans to vote on all of it. And even after that look for more jostling in mid-September leading up to the  GOP County Convention. Oddly, it is very unlikely that anybody for those elected Republican Party posts will have very much to say about either the upcoming 2014 New York State Convention or any of the statewide issues, except as they might specifically be about State Senator Martin Golden and what he has been up to in Albany. Instead, the arguments will largely be ones for or against Craig Eaton’s leadership of the Brooklyn Republican Party, as against Marty Golden’s newest hand-picked candidate from Bay Ridge to be the Republican County Leader, Timothy J. Cochrane.

Naturally, one would expect that both major sides would reach out to the independent Republicans, or as I’m now calling them the “free radicals,” especially the ones with some group affiliation. And, there have been many such direct and indirect contacts, some have even occurred in ways that could be called "strange," even by Brooklyn standards (but those are stories only for telling over many beers).   For the most part, the independent or free radical Republicans have been bundled into three or four groups: the Brooklyn Young Republican Club, The Brooklyn Tea Party Republican Caucus and the LaGuardia Republican Club, being the most notable. at this time.  By some weird alchemy, natural affinities caused several of the independents to gravitate or move covalently at or very near the beginning of the process - these are the early precipitants (not participants) like Glenn Nocera, Moshe Muratov and the like who went toward the Golden-plating pole; and contrariwise, Joseph Hayon who moved toward where he thought he’d find some good Eaton.

As things move into the next phase of the petitioning-objections-hearing process –  court intervention  –  the game seems to have changed from an early phase that looked like a close contest favoring the Marty Golden-backed “Republicans for Change” to a fairly close split leaning in the direction of Chairman Craig Eaton and most of the leadership of the KCRP organization. A weak Golden-Storobin backed effort against State Committee Members Pincus and Braunstein has already collapsed in the 45th AD. Similarly, the 47th AD, which many had thought would be a major battleground, seems safely in the fold of the Republican County organization, only now with a more deeply ingrained and openly-expressed “anti-Golden Zeitgeist.”

The biggest battle remains to be the one playing-out inside the far-flung boundaries of the 46th AD. The principal formal antagonists there are Dominick Sarta and Clorinda Annarummo from the Seergy Republican Club, with strong backing from the Golden crowd, and Marcus Aurelius Nussbaum and Lucretia Regina-Potter, backed by the independent Fiorello LaGuardia Republicans in Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge, and (either because of or in reaction to the David Storobin alignment with Marty Golden) with strong local support among Republicans in the Coney Island and Brighton Beach corridor. Making this contest even more interesting is the current posture of the Nussbaum-Potter-LaGuardia faction of independent Republicans to remain neutral  as between Eaton and Golden; instead they are formally maintaining their recent independent “free radical” holdout status, coming from the days when the LaGuardia Club was the Regular Republican Organization of the 49th AD; and both Eaton and Golden cast them adrift, attempting-and-failing to take down the La Guardia Club leaders in successive GOP leadership races. Since then, reapportionment completely changed the 49th, placing Lucretia Regina-Potter, Arnaldo Ferraro and other LaGuardia Club board members into the 46th AD.  Also taking part in the 46th jousting and jawboning will be a rump group of Eaton-leaning Republicans, who will be going mano a mano in some of Marty Golden’s strongest EDs against "Republicans for Change" candidate for City Council, John Quaglione.

A similar dynamic is at work in the remaining part of Bay Ridge, the lower Bay Ridge-Brooklyn section of the mostly-Staten Island 64th AD, represented by Republican Nicole Malliotakis. Here,  what remains of the Armand Starace Club will be an important factor in delivering the County Committee votes to either Craig Eaton or Golden’s man, Tim Cochrane.

Something completely different happened in the 44th AD, where a deal was struck by Glenn Nocera and a representative of Kathy Fox, whereby they would about evenly split the State and County Committee slots and avoid any primaries or challenges. Since both sides were backing Joe Lhota, the deal made even more sense for everybody with any other conflicting interests.

What’s going on with the 52nd AD Brownstone Republicans almost defies description. Even though there is only one slate that filed at the BOE for the 52nd AD, and they are completely outside the Marty Golden orbit, they are running as part of Golden’s so-called “Republicans for Change” slate, ostensibly because of that groups’ formal support for Joe Lhota, as opposed to the KCRP Organization that formally backs John Catsimatidis’ candidacy for mayor. Nonetheless, some experts in election proceedings believe that a good portion of the Republican County Committee from the 52nd AD, and possibly its State Committee Members can be removed from the ballot because of various substantive shortcomings to the petition.

AND the 48th AD –  I’m glad I’m writing this on the Sabbath. My four or five sources there have about ten opinions as to what is going on.  I’ll let them write their own comments as to who is with whom, and why Nachman Caller is behind all of it.

  1. You have to use a little common sense here.

Mr.Eaton has made the right choice in Cat Man.

Why you say well The Republican party and the Democratic party of which their are so many fractions are playing mind games with them selves, unless they wake up and in the end the black vote will prevail like it always does and the unions will go with the person that will create jobs and protect the City of New York and now a list and the odds and these odds are from Vegas and Atlantic City insiders

  2. There are solid reasons to back Joe Lhota and there are solid reasons to back John Catsimatidis, but betting odds would have almost nothing to do with it. Besides, nobody who really wagers would put any real $$$$ on Catsimatidis at 5-1, either in AC, LV, at any of the worldwide outlets of the William Hill Organization, at Ladbrokes or even at a local newsstand for the man who comes by and settles up on the boxes that never move next to the faded dusty greeting cards “display.”

Besides the mayoral race odds that “Anonymous July 27, 2013 at 4:08 PM” is showing above is not what the On-line odds makers, Paddy Power or StanJames are showing — but if you can get the bets down, there looks to be a few interesting straddles available (it can’t really be that easy).
Right now, the most popular bets are Quinn and Weiner (that will probably change - but hasn’t yet); and the most popular Republican bet is – LHOTA, not Catsimatidis...

  3. The worst people in the world are those that fail to pick a side.

The "free radicals" as you call them will eventually anger both sides and will not be able to deal with either. Their cumulative relative strength at this point is almost at the point of irrelevancy.

Why would anyone "deal" with them if most of them can't be trusted. (or even contacted if some guy I talk to on the south shore is being truthful)

    Don't believe me?

  4. You mentioned 3 organizations as part of the "free radicals" coalition.

There is only one. Let's be serious for a minute.

    The Tea Party?

    The Brooklyn Young Republicans?

    C'mon.

    LOL

LaGuardia has an operation. The rest are what you would call "paper tigers."

    1. In addition to the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Club, I mentioned two other specific organizations: The Brooklyn Tea Party (Republicans or Republican Caucus) [TBTP(R)]; and The Brooklyn Young Republican Club.

"Anonymous July 28, 2013 at 11:39 AM" is correct when he or she states that only the "LaGuardia [Club] has an operation...." It is the only one of the three that is set up as an intra-AD Republican Club -- in fact, it was always set up on the model of a "Regular Organization" Republican Club, even when it ran its first successful
insurgency against the 49th AD Seergy Club many, many years ago.

The Brooklyn Tea Party is a non-partisan organization, whose Republican Caucus is encouraged to be active inside the Brooklyn Republican Party. Both the Tea Party and its Republican Caucus began rebuilding after Joseph Hayon announced his resignation and stepped away from the Tea Party to lead a sectarian political group whose goal is the pursuit of an exclusively social conservative agenda that will be able to give and receive open support from socially conservative Democrats, like Erick Salgado; and outing false social conservatives like David Greenfield. Hayon's departure from a leadership role in the Brooklyn Tea Party has left his successor, Frank Russo, the very large task of reorganizing a Tea Party that just happened to be in Brooklyn. Russo has always made it clear that right now his job is to reorganize "The Brooklyn Tea Party" into a real political force for the 2014 congressional elections in three or four of the Brooklyn Congressional Districts. "That we have any political impact at all in 2013 would be icing on the cake," according to Mr. Russo, "I wouldn't be surprised if that happened, since many of TBTP members are active with other political groups."

The Brooklyn Young Republican Club, headed by Glenn Nocera, made an early but unofficial move toward Marty Golden's "Republicans for Change," largely because of several moves over several years by Craig Eaton's KCRP organization to undermine the autonomy of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club. This resulted in many members of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club to individually support efforts like Glenn Nocera's to run for the State Committee with a slate of prospective County Committee delegates. An effort that has probably resulted in Nocera becoming a State Committeeman from the 44th AD, as well the 44th AD District Leader with control of about half the elected members of the 44th AD County Committee.

I would go on about what Joseph Hayon has done as a Republican "free radical" in the current election cycle, but I fear that rumors of being "smitten" by Mr. Hayon might escalate into rumors about my enjoying long hot showers during the winter and long cool showers during the summer, in both circumstances thinking "long and hard" about all the Republican "free radical" activities Joseph Hayon has done over the last few years. That would be so unfair to all the others who have been in my thoughts, because they too have done many Republican "free radical" activities over the same period as Mr. Hayon.

Amelia said she and her long time friend Mojo Sato a Japanese kamikaze pilot who missed his targeted ship and had floated onto the Island around 1943. Amelia told reporters they became the best of friends and he died around 20 years ago.

The first question she asked was President Roosevelt still alive.

National News President Obama was awarded the Alread E. Newman look alike award and many insiders in Washington feel he should step down as President and do stand up comedy for his entire career it seems is a comedy of errors.

Myself I happen to think he is in the top 5 of the Greatest Presidents this country ever had.

Elvis was seen recently in Bay Ridge going into Marty's Office and one insider told this reporter he sang a few songs for Marty one in particular brought the office to tears Jailhouse Rock and It's Over.

Staples is having penny days and it would be nice if some of you went their and purchased some items for the children who's parents can't afford to buy them school supplies and since many of them are illegal and both parents have to work 3 jobs

News has it the Federal Government is thinking about taking over the Board of Election, this is very refreshing at least they won't lose and or tear up important papers.

Medicare fraud and Welfare fraud is up big time in the city.
A recent tour of The Dominican Republic by a group of Bay Ridge retirees and believe it or not it was noted to me by one of them they use our food stamps as legal money and they get sent food by the barrels.

  13. UPDATE & BACKFILL: THE REAL ISSUE RAISED YESTERDAY —
Do Republicans from Brooklyn have “STANDING” to run a Brooklyn Republican Party, or does that have to come from somebody sent from Albany ?

Yesterday, Jeffrey T. Buley made a formal appearance in the courtroom of Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice David Schmidt. Buley appeared on behalf of “Republicans for Change” candidates in various cases brought by the Brooklyn Republican Chairman Craig Eaton, and some other cases by a few "free-radical Republican" objectors.

Almost immediately, Mr. Buley was arguing that the Kings County Republican Chairman had “no standing” to challenge supposedly unlawful petitions filed for purported candidates for the Kings County Republican Committee. As I said in an earlier comment to a post below, Justice Schmidt reserved decision and adjourned the matters until Thursday. But, just who is this Jeffrey T. Buley, who comes into our Brooklyn court and says that our Brooklyn GOP Chairman has “no standing.”

Buley is an Albany lawyer with long-time ties to the Republican State Senate leadership, and according to those in the courtroom, he was standing in for James E. Walsh, an election lawyer from Schenectady. Walsh is said to practice in the “... Capital District of New York State” and has had similar political affiliations with the Republican Party leadership upstate to those of Mr. Buley.

Now, with the appearance of these upstate NY State Senate-affiliated election lawyers, this supposedly local, “grassroots” political group, “Republicans for Change” is more and more having the look and feel of ASTROTURF. There is virtually nothing about these so-called “Republicans for Change” here in Brooklyn that doesn’t have a strong current or past connection with Albany and the Republican State Senate.

Why does the Republican State Senate in New York State find it so necessary to take over the Kings County Republican Party ?

Regardless of how Justice Schmidt rules on the issue of the KCRP Chairman’s standing to challenge individual candidates and/or their petition gatherers in an expedited election proceeding, it appears that Dean Skelos and the rest of the NYS Senate Republican leadership believes that Brooklyn Republicans have no standing to run the Republican Party locally in Brooklyn.

No matter how that turns out, the real game will be during 2014.Then State Senator Golden will bear the 'blunt' of what he and Skelos and Brooklyn Republicans for Change did in 2013.
