Why don’t we know more about it... them... whatever?
I’ll bet if you’re Catholic and a citizen and live in Brooklyn, you still don’t know very much about the Catholic Citizens Committee PAC — unless you are a political insider and/or one of Bishop DiMarzio’s guys....
Who is in it? Who contributes to it? What does it do? What does it espouse? What, if any, legislation does it support? What, if any, political candidates does it support? How does it pay its bills; or does it? How successful has it been in advancing issues of real concern to most practicing Catholics?
Based on the CCC PAC’s home page and a recent puff piece in the Tablet (the Brooklyn Diocesan newspaper) the PAC mostly cares about opposing only those parts of Obamacare that directly impinge on the Catholic Church itself, supporting pro-immigration legislation, supporting government programs for the poor, calling for continued funding of various social programs during a period that calls for austerity, etc., etc., etc. (one wonders why so many so-called Conservatives and Republicans, who are associated with the CCC PAC would be backing all that).
According to recent Federal postings, CCC PAC is not qualified to participate in the 2012 Federal Elections and has been sent about half a dozen notices from the FEC citing the CCC PAC’s failures to file FEC reports.
Right now, it looks like its two biggest contributors are two related landlords’ PACs, the RSA PAC (Rent Stabilization Association) and the Neighborhood Preservation PAC, who combined for $17,500 in late August and early September 2012 (just in time for the 2012 primaries), which constituted the overwhelming bulk of contributions reported for that period. In addition, CCC PAC is carrying forward over $7300 in loans/debts since the 2010 election cycle.
Prior postings and commentary about CCC PAC appeared on the independent Republican blog, “Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn” — it's all still there and easy to find with most search engines.
