Republican-Conservative Joseph Hayon quietly pursues his conservative family-values quest in 41st AD contest against long-term liberal Democrat Helene Weinstein

Hayon race being funded by family values group but not local GOP;  and the first State Senator to endorse Hayon is not one of Brooklyn's  Republican-Conservatives but the socially conservative Democrat State Senator Ruben Diaz

It was  reported by Colin Campbell in his “SUGGESTED READING –  Morning Read...” in the 10-11-12 Politicker blog that State Senator Rubén Díaz. is up and around, and politicking again, not only on his own behalf, but also on behalf of candidates that Diaz believes have strong social conservative positions, especially their opposition to gay marriage.  Recently, Diaz endorsed one such candidate, who is running in a tough Democratic district in Brooklyn, Joseph Hayon.

Mr. Hayon is a Sephardic Orthodox Jewish family values activist, who is running again as a socially conservative  GOP assembly challenger, this time against a very liberal incumbent, Democrat  Helene Weinstein, in the routinely Democratic 41st Assembly District in Brooklyn. Joseph Hayon has been in the news as president of the Brooklyn Tea Party and as a political operative who is known to have worked, both openly and behind the scenes, in the special election victories of Congressman Bob Turner and State Senator David Storobin, both Republican-Conservatives.  Quite apart from those political merit badges,  Hayon was known to have run a very thinly funded stealth assembly campaign against Steve Cymbrowitz that garnered a much larger-than-expected result in the big Republican year 2010. It remains to be seen whether candidate Hayon can repeat his 45th AD magic in the 41st AD, a district that’s very different than the 45th AD where Hayon had a large Orthodox Jewish community in which to work for individual votes and group support.

This time around, in another stealth campaign, Hayon has largely gone off into remote areas of the district to sell his social conservative message to Black and Latino Christians in scattered Pentecostal storefronts where the endorsements by State Senator Diaz and the National Organization for Marriage have at least gotten him an entry, if not open support. At the same time, Hayon has continued to work in the Orthodox Jewish community getting a significant hand from Harold Tischler, father of Democrats Abraham and Mitchell Tischler.

Oddly, the Brooklyn Republican establishment has largely stayed  at arms length from Republican-Conservative Joseph Hayon. Two Republican State Senators, Golden and Storobin, had been expected to endorse Hayon who is running along with them in several ADs of those state senate districts on the Republican and Conservative lines, but that hasn’t happened yet. Also, even though Hayon has received donations from a large national organization, and a well-known local Democrat, the Brooklyn GOP has not even matched its nominal 2010 contribution for the 45th AD race for Hayon’s 2012  race against Weinstein in the 41st.
